Assistant CoachesFrank LupinWide ReceiversJoey SmithDefensive BacksZac BaltzDefensive EndsFrank Lupin entershis 53rd season incoaching in 2013, andhis 32nd year as anassistant coach at <strong>ESU</strong>.Including his eightyears as a player, fourin high school and fourfor the Warriors, thisfall marks Lupin’s 61styear in football.Lupin was recognized for his long-timecontributions to Warrior football when hewas inducted into the <strong>ESU</strong> Athletic Hall ofFame in the fall of 2002. He was a playerfor the Warriors from 1957-60, served as afreshman coach in 1961, and returned to <strong>ESU</strong>in 1983 where he has been a member of thecoaching staff ever since.Lupin has developed all-conference,record-breaking pass catchers nearly everyyear since his return. He has coachedalmost all of the top receivers in schoolhistory, including Evan Prall, who set PSACrecords with 4,093 yards receiving and 50touchdowns in his career, and also holds the<strong>ESU</strong> school record with 236 receptions.Prall was a two-time All-Americaselection and set PSAC marks with 1,766yards receiving and 23 touchdowns as ajunior in 2005. Dusty Reed, Ed Kiser, JeffGiglio, Drew Stem, Sam Shuman, TimStrenfel, John Jeffries, Justin Kondikoff andJohn Kotorsky have also been All-PSACselections at wide receiver since 2000. The1996 and 2005 teams both featured a pair of1,000-yard pass catchers and 10 players havegone over 2,000 career receiving yards.As a player at <strong>ESU</strong>, Lupin was one ofthe Warriors’ top running backs underhead coach Jack Gregory from 1957-60. Asa senior, he averaged 7.3 yards per carry,fourth-best in school history, with 313 yardson 43 rushing attempts.After leaving <strong>ESU</strong>, Lupin was an assistantcoach at Binghamton (N.Y.) North HighSchool from 1962-67, and was head coachat Waverly (N.Y.) High School from 1968-79.Lupin returned to the Poconos in 1980 andwas the head coach at Pocono MountainHigh School for three seasons before taking aposition on the <strong>ESU</strong> coaching staff.Lupin retired from teaching in 2003and was a physical education teacher at thePocono Elementary Center in Tannersville. Heearned his bachelor’s degree in health andphysical education from <strong>ESU</strong> in 1962, andhis Master’s degree in physical education in1978.Joey Smith, whoplayed in the NFL forfour years with theNew York Giants, is inhis 13th season as anassistant coach at <strong>East</strong><strong>Stroudsburg</strong> <strong>University</strong>during the 2013season. He has movedto the defensivesecondary after coaching outside linebackersearlier in his career. He also coaches thereturners on special teams.Smith returned kickoffs and puntsand also saw action at wide receiver anddefensive back for the Giants from 1991-94.He was a defensive back and kick returner atthe <strong>University</strong> of Louisville and played on theCardinals’ 1990 Fiesta Bowl championshipteam. Smith graduated from Louisville in1991.Zac Baltz, a twoyearletterwinnerat linebacker forthe Warriors anda volunteer coachin 2012, joins theWarriors staff asdefensive ends coachand strength andconditioning coach forthe 2013 season.Baltz was a graduate assistant in theAdmissions Office while volunteering for theWarriors a year ago. On the field, he preparedpractice schedules, edited and organizedpractice and game film, and oversawthe offseason strength and conditioningprogram.He lettered for the Warriors during the2003 and 2004 seasons. An <strong>ESU</strong> graduatewith a degree in Elementary Education, Baltzwas a fourth grade teacher in Baltimore forone year and also worked as an associateteacher in the Nazareth School District.The Warriors raise their helmets in victory following a last-second, 35-28 win overWest Chester on Homecoming last season.8 <strong>ESU</strong> <strong>Football</strong> <strong>Media</strong> <strong>Guide</strong>
