Assistant CoachesMike TerwilligerOffensive CoordinatorMike Terwilliger, amember of the <strong>ESU</strong>Athletic Hall of Fame asa player and a coach,enters his 40th year at<strong>ESU</strong> and his 36th as anassistant coach duringthe 2013 season. In2006, Terwilliger wasrecognized by theAmerican <strong>Football</strong>Coaches Association as the Division II AssistantCoach of the Year.Terwilliger has been involved in all 407games - the Division II record - that DennyDouds has been on the sidelines as a headcoach. He was a four-year starter at quarterbackfrom 1974-77, and has been an assistant coachsince graduating in the spring of 1978 witha degree in health and physical education.He also holds a Master’s degree in physicaleducation from Temple <strong>University</strong>, which heearned in 1983.Terwilliger has been the offensivecoordinator since 2001 and has led a recordsettingoffense that has averaged at least 24points per game for 12 straight years. <strong>ESU</strong> QBshave ranked in the top three in the PSAC totaloffense in every season since 2002 - Matt Soltes(2012), Ray Wagner (2011), Matt Marshall (2009-10), Tim Roken (2007-08), Jimmy Terwilliger(2003-06) and Jeremy Palm (2002).Soltes had a standout season as a redshirtfreshman last fall, earning the PSAC <strong>East</strong>Freshman of the Year award and leadingNCAA Division II freshmen in total offense andpassing efficiency. He set the PSAC and NCAAall-division freshman record with 666 yards oftotal offense, and <strong>ESU</strong> set a PSAC team recordfor total offense with 828 yards, at LIU Post onOctober 27.Wagner was a Harlon Hill Award candidatein his only season as a starter in 2011, ranking6th in DII in passing and total offense. Hewas also the first QB in PSAC history withconsecutive 500-yard passing games.Marshall guided the Warriors to their mostrecent NCAA Playoff appearance in 2009, thefirst of his two years under center.Terwilliger’s son, Jimmy, directed theoffense from 2003 through 2006 and left with16 <strong>ESU</strong> records and 18 NCAA records, includingDivision II standards for passing yards (14,350),total offense (16,064) and passing touchdowns(148). Jimmy was a three-time selection as thePSAC <strong>East</strong> Offensive Player of the Year andwon the Harlon Hill Award in 2005 as the mostoutstanding player in Division II football.In 2005, the Warriors averaged 42.6 pointsper game and 508.4 yards of total offense asthey won the Division II Northeast Regionchampionship and advanced to the nationalsemifinals for the first time in school history.The younger Terwilliger threw for 4,571 yardsand 50 touchdowns, while the rushing gameaveraged 163 yards per game.The 2004 Warriors recorded nearly 500 yardsof total offense per game and Jimmy Terwilligerled the nation in pass efficiency while throwingfor 3,826 yards, the third-highest total in PSAChistory.As <strong>ESU</strong>’s quarterback coach since 1978,Terwilliger has tutored all of his successors atthe position. His teaching has helped standoutquarterbacks Damian Poalucci, an NCAA recordholder,along with Andy Baranak, Bret Comp,James Franklin, Jeremy Palm, Tim Roken, MattMarshall, Ray Wagner and Matt Soltes establishschool passing records.Terwilliger was one of the finestquarterbacks in the school’s history, leadingthe Warriors to undefeated seasons and PSACchampionships in 1975 and 1976 in his fouryears as a starter. He was inducted into the <strong>ESU</strong>Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.After taking over as a starter early in hisfreshman year, Terwilliger guided the Warriorsto a 30-4-1 record over four seasons. He earnedAll-Conference first team honors twice and wasalso an Associated Press Little All-American. Hethrew for 3,799 yards and 33 touchdowns in hisplaying career.Terwilliger and his wife Kim are the parentsof three children. Jimmy is a health and physicaleducation teacher and the head footballcoach at Pleasant Valley High School, Kelly is agraduate student at Ohio <strong>University</strong> and playedfield hockey at Ohio State, and Jackie is a recent<strong>ESU</strong> graduate.
