Period Country Client Project, Tasksdesigned to assess fish populations in the estuaries andto relate recent (over the last 5-10 years) changes inmanagement of these system to the status of their fishpopulations, with a view to improving management ofestuaries generally.2006-2011Tanzania InternationalConservationUnionInternational mentor of the Estuary Team for a projectentitled “Flows for People and the Environment:Supporting Sustainable Land Management in the Pangani(IUCN)/Pangani Basin (Tanzania)”. The key objectives of the projectWater Basin included collecting and synthesising present knowledgeOffice, Tanzania on the Pangani River system and its users, and todevelop an integrated approach to future waterallocationdecisions. The estuary component of theproject included conducting a health assessment of thePangani estuary with the Tanzanian national team andthe development of a flow assessment tool to guideallocation of freshwater flow in the system.2006- South Cape Action Project leader responsible for development of a fine2007 Africa Plan for People scale conservation plan for the Agulhas Marine&the Bioregion. Three principal components of the projectEnvironment included collating and collecting necessary biophysical,(C.A.P.E.) and biological, and socio-economic baseline data required toWorld Wildlife undertake fine scale conservation planning exercises andFoundation(WWF)to support conservation planning interventions in theAgulhas (Marine) Bioregion of South Africa; providingrecommendations for the establishment of a network ofmarine protected areas in the Cape Floristic Region thatprovides for biodiversity conservation, environmentaleducation and research, and that contributes tosustaining fishing activities; and assessing the economicvalue of goods and services provided by MPAs in theAgulhas Bioregion.2006- South Department of Consultant appointed to lead the process of developing a2007 Africa Science and data management facility for the South African NationalTechnology Antarctica Programme (SANAP) in consultation with the(DST) and the SANAP research and management community.
