Millathane ® 76 rubber compounds can be effectivelybonded to metal. Some cleaning tips to ensure a lasting bond:■ To ensure consistent bonding results, metal surfacesmust be thoroughly cleaned before application of theadhesive. Protective oils, cutting oils, greases, etc. shouldbe removed by solvent degreasing or alkaline cleaning.■ Rust, scale or tightly adherent oxide coatings must beremoved by suitable mechanical or chemical cleaningmethods.■ Grit blasting is the most widely used method ofmechanical cleaning, but machining, grinding, or wirebrushing may be used. Steel grit is used for fast cleaningof steel, cast iron, or other ferrous metals while aluminumoxide, sand, or other non-ferrous grit is used for blastcleaning of stainless steel, aluminum, brass, zinc or othernon-ferrous metals.■ Chemical cleaning of the metal will also remove rust, scale, or tightly adherent oxide coatings. Chemicaltreatments are used on metal parts that would bedistorted by blast cleaning or in cases where tight sizetolerances must be maintained. Chemical cleaning isreadily adapted to automated metal treatment andadhesive application lines.■ Phosphatizing is a commonly used treatment for steelwhile chromate conversion coating is commonly usedfor aluminum.ADHESION TO METALSBelow is a list of commercially available adhesives:LORD CORP.CHEMICAL PRODUCTS GROUPChemlok 233Chemlok TyPlyBNChemlok 210Chemlok 218Chemlok 250/250XChemlok 205 (Primer)ROHM AND HAASThixon 408Thixon P-5 (Primer)NOTE — as in any bonding operation, testing should bedone to see which adhesive works best in your application. If the one coat system does not produce the desiredresults, try the two-coat system. Some adhesives may workbetter in a compression mold than in transfer molding.TSE INDUSTRIES, INC. (800) 237-7634 MILLATHANE 76 7/04 pg. 23
