We willexamine the full spectrum <strong>of</strong> man-made visual forms encountered by contemporaryAmericans and learn how to think critically about various aspects <strong>of</strong> our visualenvironment from architectural complexes to individual buildings, from graphic novelsand cartoons to films and works <strong>of</strong> art, from still photos to streaming video. Althoughthe main focus <strong>of</strong> the course is contemporary American visual culture, we will exploreother cultures and other time periods considering the subtle and not so subtle effects <strong>of</strong>effects <strong>of</strong> globalization on our lives, beliefs, consuming, and viewing habits.ANCIENT THROUGH MEDIEVAL ART (3 CR)Survey <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> art and architecture with primary emphasis on cultures <strong>of</strong>Egypt, Western Asia, Greece, Rome and medieval Europe.RENAISSANCE THROUGH MODERN ART (3 CR)Historical development <strong>of</strong> Western art and architecture from the fourteenth centurythrough the present.STUDIES IN RENAISSANCE ART (Subtitle required) (3 CR)While Renaissance artistic production is traditionally identified with Italian centers,particularly Florence, this course explores the Renaissance as a European phenomenon,one <strong>of</strong> dynamic interchange between European artistic centers, artists, and trade inworks <strong>of</strong> art. We reconsider the emphasis usually placed on mathematical perspective,assimilation <strong>of</strong> the antique revival and illusion <strong>of</strong> life. Besides painting, sculpture, andarchitecture, study <strong>of</strong> Renaissance visual culture is expanded to include prints anddecorative arts. Focus is placed on the values and motives <strong>of</strong> the patrons as well as thepurposes and functions <strong>of</strong> art works – whether religious, cultural, social, or political.Individual research will lead to a paper, a group presentation, and will contribute to alarger class project.MAJOR BLACK WRITERS (3 CR)A cross-cultural and historical approach to written and oral works by major Blackauthors <strong>of</strong> Africa, the Caribbean and the United States. The course includes writers suchas Chinua Achebe (Africa), Wilson Harris (Caribbean), and Toni Morrison (USA).HISTORY AND THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE III: TWENTIETH CENTURY ANDCONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE (3 CR)Investigates modern and late twentieth century architecture as well as current themesand issues in contemporary architecture in relation to their historical context.Prerequisites: ARC 111, ARC 212 and ARC 213; or consent <strong>of</strong> the instructor.GREEK AND ROMAN MYTHOLOGY (3 CR)The Greek myths studied both from the standpoint <strong>of</strong> their meaning to the Greeks andRomans and from the standpoint <strong>of</strong> their use in later literature and in everyday life.THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST AND GREECE TO THE DEATH OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT (3 CR)Covers the birth <strong>of</strong> civilization in Egypt and Mesopotamia, and the history <strong>of</strong> the ancientNear East and Greece to the conquest <strong>of</strong> Greece by Philip <strong>of</strong> Macedon.THE HELLENISTIC WORLD AND ROME (3 CR)Covers the conquests <strong>of</strong> Alexander the Great, and the main features <strong>of</strong> the HellenisticWorld, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire to the death <strong>of</strong> Constantine.8
