Differences between regions <strong>of</strong> the global south areinvestigated through selected case studies from Latin America, Asia, and Africa.HISTORY OF EUROPE FROM THE MID-SEVENTEETH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT (3 CR)A survey <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> European politics, society, and culture from the Age <strong>of</strong>Absolutism to the present. It is a continuation <strong>of</strong> HIS 104.WAR AND SOCIETY, 1914-1945 (3 CR)“Total war” in the 20th century exerted a pr<strong>of</strong>ound impact on social relations in a greatmany ways. This course provides you with the opportunity to think long and hard aboutthe social impact <strong>of</strong> “total” warfare, from a transnational perspective. We will explorea number <strong>of</strong> social and cultural themes as they relate to the two World Wars, such as:the impact <strong>of</strong> total war on gender relations; military technology and ethics; thedemonization <strong>of</strong> the enemy; war-time propaganda; the roots <strong>of</strong> the welfare state withinthe warfare state; and the postwar efforts to come to terms with the atrocities <strong>of</strong> totalwar. HIS 121 earns <strong>UK</strong> <strong>Core</strong> credit for either Humanities or Global Dynamics.HISTORY OF THE BRITISH PEOPLE TO THE RESTORATION (3 CR)From the Roman period to the Stuart period. A general survey <strong>of</strong> the various epochsand phases <strong>of</strong> the English people at home and abroad.INTRODUCTION TO JAPANESE CULTURE, PRE-MODERN TO 1868 (3 CR)This course, taught in English, is designed as a general introduction to the culture <strong>of</strong> premodernJapan (up to the Meiji Restoration <strong>of</strong> 1868). Topics include: Shinto, Buddhism,and Confucianism in ancient Japan; feminine sensibilities in ancient literature; canons <strong>of</strong>medieval art; the culture <strong>of</strong> military strife; Christianity in pre-modern Japan; andencounters with the West.INTRODUCTION TO LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES (3 CR)This is an interdisciplinary approach to introduce the region <strong>of</strong> “Latin America” byproviding a historical and geographic context for the key social, political, economic, andenvironmental topics and controversies that define the region today. This class aims toprovide an understanding <strong>of</strong> Latin America from a postcolonial perspective focusing onhow the region is perceived from the inside, and how it is socially constructed by theoutside. It also explores how those discussions illuminate the understanding <strong>of</strong> Hispaniccultures in the U.S. To accomplish this, we shall critically and collectively engage with avariety <strong>of</strong> texts, films, literatures, websites, mixed media, guest lectures, as well as classconversation and debate.MUSIC IN THE WORLD (Subtitle required) (3 CR)The goal <strong>of</strong> this course is to gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the key musical andcultural practices <strong>of</strong> the designated geographic area. We will cover art, folk, andpopular music with an emphasis on how communities conceptualize music withinvarious cultural contexts, such as the court, theater, festival and film. Students will gaina sense <strong>of</strong> the musical distinctiveness <strong>of</strong> various cultural traditions while alsocontemplating the cultural connections and tensions throughout the region as a whole,with the expectation that this work will prepare you to better understand any futuremusical and cultural encounters with Asia and other parts <strong>of</strong> the world.23
