FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTAt the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kentucky</strong> (<strong>UK</strong>), Foreign language credits are no longer explicitly required as part <strong>of</strong> the new <strong>UK</strong> GeneralEducation Program, the <strong>UK</strong> <strong>Core</strong>. Foreign language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency is still an expectation for students who enter <strong>UK</strong> and is stillconsidered to be an important part <strong>of</strong> the students’ educational background.Beginning in fall 2013, all students who enter <strong>UK</strong> will be expected to demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in a foreign language at the mid-novicelevel, as determined by a competency evaluation, for example, the STAMP test. During fall 2011 and 2012, the university will beconducting pilot testing <strong>of</strong> randomly selected incoming students to determine what level these students possess upon entering <strong>UK</strong>.Although the new <strong>UK</strong> <strong>Core</strong> does not explicitly mandate foreign language coursework, it is still the case that students admitted to theuniversity should have completed two years <strong>of</strong> foreign language in order to enroll at <strong>UK</strong>, as per the <strong>Kentucky</strong> Department <strong>of</strong>Education policy regarding the Pre-College curriculum (http://bit.ly/jaqmgh).As a result <strong>of</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> foreign language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency and the <strong>Kentucky</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Education policy for completion <strong>of</strong> thePre-College curriculum, the following policy remains in effect for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years:Any first-time freshman or transfer student must demonstrate that they have completed two high school credits in a singleforeign language, or two semesters at the postsecondary level. A student who has not completed the high school foreignlanguage requirement will be required to take a two-semester sequence in one foreign language at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Kentucky</strong> prior to graduation.There are no changes in current policy for students with a foreign language learning disability, international students with avalid TOEFL score, transfer students with an AA or AS degree, or any other student who has completed a baccalaureatedegree.35
