INTELLECTUAL INQUIRY IN THE HUMANITIES CONTINUEDGER 105GWS 201HIS 104HIS 105HIS 121HIS 202HIS 229(CLA 229)GERMAN FILM TODAY (3 CR)This course examines contemporary German filmmaking from a global and cross-culturalperspective. It is not intended to be a history <strong>of</strong> German film, but an introduction to theinterpretation <strong>of</strong> films produced in a specific national context outside <strong>of</strong> what iscommonly referred to as Hollywood. Our examination will have two parts; 1) anintroduction to many <strong>of</strong> the interpretative strategies used to understand feature lengthfilms as one <strong>of</strong> the dominant modes <strong>of</strong> storytelling and mythmaking in thecontemporary world, and 2) an on-going discussion <strong>of</strong> the many ways in which issuesrelated to nationality, language and global economics have influenced filmmaking inGermany. We will view, analyze, compare, discuss and interpret a representativesampling <strong>of</strong> contemporary German films while questioning the very designation Germanin the context <strong>of</strong> globalized media markets.INTRODUCTION TO GENDER AND WOMEN’S STUDIES IN THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES(3 CR)Introduces students to basic methods <strong>of</strong> humanistic inquiry in Gender and Women’sStudies, examines cultural beliefs and meanings about men and women, and exploresthe lives, achievements, and creative expressions <strong>of</strong> women in a cross-cultural,interactive, and interdisciplinary format.HISTORY OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION (3 CR)A survey <strong>of</strong> the political, social, economic and cultural developments <strong>of</strong> civilization inEurope and in those regions <strong>of</strong> the Mediterranean world that strongly influenced itsdirection.HISTORY OF EUROPE FROM THE MID-SEVENTEENTH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT (3 CR)A survey <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> European politics, society, and culture from the Age <strong>of</strong>Absolutism to the present. It is a continuation <strong>of</strong> HIS 104.WAR AND SOCIETY, 1914-1945 (3 CR)“Total war” in the 20th century exerted a pr<strong>of</strong>ound impact on social relations in a greatmany ways. This course provides you with the opportunity to think long and hard aboutthe social impact <strong>of</strong> “total” warfare, from a transnational perspective. We will explore anumber <strong>of</strong> social and cultural themes as they relate to the two World Wars, such as: theimpact <strong>of</strong> total war on gender relations; military technology and ethics; thedemonization <strong>of</strong> the enemy; war-time propaganda; the roots <strong>of</strong> the welfare state withinthe warfare state; and the postwar efforts to come to terms with the atrocities <strong>of</strong> totalwar. HIS 121 earns <strong>UK</strong> <strong>Core</strong> credit for either Humanities or Global Dynamics.HISTORY OF THE BRITISH PEOPLE TO THE RESTORATION (3 CR)From the Roman period to the Stuart period. A general survey <strong>of</strong> the various epochs andphases <strong>of</strong> the English people at home and abroad.THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST AND GREECE TO THE DEATH OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT (3 CR)Covers the birth <strong>of</strong> civilization in Egypt and Mesopotamia, and the history <strong>of</strong> the ancientNear East and Greece to the conquest <strong>of</strong> Greece by Philip <strong>of</strong> Macedon.10
