INTELLECTUAL INQUIRY IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCESANT 101CLD 102CPH 201ECO 101GWS 200PS 235INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGY (3 CR)This course introduces students to the discipline <strong>of</strong> anthropology ‐ the holistic study <strong>of</strong>humankind. This course will also introduce students to processes <strong>of</strong> inquiry inanthropology. The ultimate goal <strong>of</strong> the course is to help students learn to thinkanthropologically, which is to think critically. Thinking anthropologically can help usavoid misunderstandings that fuel suspicion, distrust, and even hatred <strong>of</strong> others. In anincreasingly globalized world, learning to understand and respect human differences willhelp us realize that we are, after all, all human.THE DYNAMICS OF RURAL SOCIAL LIFE (3 CR)Introduces major topics <strong>of</strong> sociology by exploring social, political and cultural issuesconfronting rural society and American agriculture, such as: population change,industrialization, energy developments, and agricultural change. Students may notreceive credit for both this course and SOC 101.AN INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC HEALTH: THEORY AND METHODS (3 CR)This course provides the student with basic knowledge about the discipline <strong>of</strong> publichealth. After receiving an introduction and historical orientation to public health,students will begin to acquire functional knowledge <strong>of</strong> the theoretical andmethodological underpinnings <strong>of</strong> public health practice. Key content areas such asepidemiology, health behavior, environmental health, health policy, health disparities,HIV/AIDS, obesity, tobacco prevention and other pertinent public health topics willbecome focal points for class discussion. This course will emphasize theory-drivenempirical investigation <strong>of</strong> key behavioral issues that influence the health and well-being<strong>of</strong> our nation.CONTEMPORARY ECONOMIC ISSUES (3 CR)A basic course in the analysis on contemporary economic issues with emphasis oncurrent economic topics such as inflation, poverty and affluence, urban congestion, andenvironmental pollution. Students will be asked to figure things out and not just recallfacts. Students will think about why the decisions people make get made, how thesedecisions affect the allocation <strong>of</strong> scarce resources, and whether there exists ways tochange people’s incentives, affect their decisions, and thereby make our world a betterplace. Credit will not be given for this course to students who have received prior creditin ECO 201 and/or 202, and/or ECO 260 and/or 261.INTRODUCTION TO GENDER AND WOMEN’S STUDIES IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES (3 CR)An introduction to women’s studies from a social science perspective, using a crossculturaland interdisciplinary approach. Introduces students to social scienceexplanations for sex-typed behavior, to social perceptions <strong>of</strong> women and men, and tothe roles <strong>of</strong> women in social and cultural life.WORLD POLITICS (3 CR)A study <strong>of</strong> the most significant problems <strong>of</strong> world politics, including the fundamentalfactors governing international relations, the techniques and instruments <strong>of</strong> powerpolitics, and the conflicting interests in organizing world peace.12
