Criteria for Program ConsiderationThe <strong>Juvenile</strong> <strong>Justice</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> is a program operated by the <strong>Ottawa</strong> <strong>Area</strong> <strong>Intermediate</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> inconjunction with the Twentieth Circuit Court/<strong>Juvenile</strong> Division of <strong>Ottawa</strong> County. It is designed to servestudents ordered by the court who are either expelled, on a long term suspended, or exhibit significant,chronic school problems (e.g., significant discipline problems, truancy, and/or numerous suspensions). .No student can attend without being ordered.<strong>Juvenile</strong> <strong>Justice</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Mission StatementProviding a quality education for adjudicated youth.PhilosophyTo return students back to the community with a better understanding of whom they are and how they cancreate a positive future for themselves academically and socially.Vision: All students are able to CHANGE their future.C- Collaborate with othersH- Honor yourself and communityA- Achieve success despite adversityN- New beginningG- Gain a better understanding of selfE- Excellence in educationBelief System: All students must LEARN in order to CHANGE.L-Learn in a safe, respectful, non-threatening environmentE-Education is essentialA-Acknowledge every student is valuable and has meaningR-Recognize the purpose of why they are in the programN-Nurture educational and social developmentStudent Leadership Advisory CouncilAll students will have the opportunity to serve on the Student Leadership Advisory Council. The purposeof the Council is to provide students an avenue to positively impact the program by guiding their peers inprocessing through issues, effectively dealing with conflict, appropriate expression of needs/wants, and toenhance their leadership skills. The Council will be led by JJI and/or Court staff and meetings will takeplace on a regular basis.5
