It may be necessary to collectand treat leachate before it reaches a stream or other fresh surface orground water supply . Prevention of rainfall percolation into thelandfill also reduces the pollution potential . This will beaccomplished by adequate surface slopes in combination with impervioussurface ditches, maintenance of the landfill surface, such as fillingsettlement areas immediately, and use the planting of cover crop toconsume a large volume of water . The use of tight cover material alsowill decrease the rate of rainfall percolation, but adequate vents mustbe provided for the gases that are produced in the decompositionprocess .
