Seraj8 CONCLUSIONIt is difficult to conduct this type of study from a distant place. Most of the literature found onthe issue was from the late 1990’s and the first few years of the current decade. More recentinformation in published documents was hard to find. Information regarding the recent statusof Bangladeshi shrimp aquaculture was collected through personal communication. The studywould have been better with more input from the stakeholders. Data collection would benefitfrom direct interviews and study area visits also could have helped in getting a more preciseoutcome. However, the study was actually the start of discussion on environmentalcertification of Bangladeshi shrimp and tried to address the main issues regarding theminimum substantive criteria set by the FAO. More intensive studies are needed to find outthe specific places to improve the situation and the ways to develop a certification andlabelling system. There also need to be more studies to analyse the financial cost and benefitfor adopting a certification system and development of guiding documents like code ofconducts specific for Bangladeshi shrimp aquaculture.UNU-Fisheries Training Programme 48
