Joint residential sourcingDirect and indirect savings plus a boostfor the environmentUnlike applications where a separate billing meter isinstalled in every apartment or residence for individualbilling, joint residential sourcing involves having onecentral ‘billing’ meter. The housing association, condominium or equivalent thenacts as a single electricity subscriber and redistributesits costs amongst its members according to their actualconsumption. The latter is measured by a simpleDIN-meter (or additional billing meter) in each apartment. This is often referred to as sub-metering.The attractions are many. Direct savings are won viareduced network charges, i.e. electricity is supplied to justone subscriber (the association) instead of a subscriber inevery apartment. The association then has a much better bargainingposition when negotiating prices with energy companies, which should lead to lower prices for all.Reliable and easy to implementJoint residential sourcing is easy to implement. Usually noformal approval is required, but this may vary from country tocountry depending on local rules and legislation. ABB electricitymeters help alleviate common concerns as they areapproved for billing applications within the EU/EEC, i.e. theyare MID-approved (see page 46). Members can thus trusttheir use in joint residential sourcing.Simple installation in standard enclosuresThe DIN meters usually used to distribute costs between apartmentsare simple to install. Small enough to fit in standard DINenclosures, they require no special housing or rebuilding work. The data they generate are normally collected by via pulse orserial readings transmitted continuously to a central unit (thelatter also allow access to additional data). At the simplestlevel, the meters can be read manually.Sub-metering brings on energy awarenessExperience shows that occupiers save up to 30% on electricitybills when they can see their own consumption. This isnot surprising. When individual occupiers get a clear picturethat relates electricity use to activity, they know exactly wheresavings can be made.Cost savings also benefit the environmentKnowing how and where electricity costs arise will also helpimprove the environment by cutting the need for ‘unnecessary’electrical energy production. A specific example is the multitudeof devices with ‘stand-by’ consumption, i.e. connected tothe mains supply but not in use. These include transformers formobile phone chargers, TVs and computers, halogen lamps, etc. It’s not uncommon that such devices in a single homecontinuously consume up to 100 W or more. This is wastefuland costly. Once again, individual measurement withcontinuous readings (especially if they are web-based) makesthe problem visible – and easier to remedy.Joint residential sourcing offers clearcost-saving opportunities for housingassociations and their members,at the same time as it benefits theenvironment.2CMC480022C0003| Electricity meters 7

Billing applicationsABB meters meet key regulatory and practical demandsfor billing applications. Billing employs electricity metersto measure consumption and use this reading to generatean invoice, usually monthly, paid by the user to the energysupplier for the electricity consumed. For this reason, it isalso known as revenue metering. Those who pay bills, usually home-owners or businesses, naturally only want to pay for the electricity they use.ABB meters go a long way to achieving this accurately.Special requirements on billing meters includeMID-approvalMeters that read electricity consumption as a basis for billingmust meet special requirements, including compliance withMID, the new EU/EEC directive for measuring instruments thatwas taken into national legislation during 2006 (see page 46for more details). In Russia, the equivalent standard is GOST.For purely practical reasons, billing meter size is also very important.ABB meters are more compact than traditional incoming‘utility meters’, which means that they are much easierto install. That they can be enclosed in standard DIN-rail fittingsalso means an attractive installation, which is importantwhen this is visible in the home, e.g. in an entrance hall.Modern technical functions increase usabilityABB electricity meters are well equipped to meet moderntechnical demands such as four quadrant metering,a function increasingly being requested. Four quadrantmetering measures energy generated as well as consumed, and is thus highly relevant for properties with their own solarpanels or wind power, for example.Tariffs are used for recording consumption in various time intervals.Tariffs can be controlled via inputs, communication oran internal clock. ABB meters are available with 2 or 4 tariffs.Previous values and load profile are two further practicalfeatures found on certain meters in the ABB range. Theformer means that the meters save previous consumptionreadings (usually monthly, sometimes 24-hour) in a register. This allows the electricity supply company to read the exactconsumption over a number of previous specified periods.Load profile measures current electricity consumption overdefined intervals, e.g. 15 min, 30 min or 60 min. Subscriberswith a web portal can then follow their own use of electricity‘minute-by-minute’, which is invaluable for optimizing theiruse as well as identifying stand-by consumption, i.e. when‘nothing’ is on. Both help change energy awareness andconsumption behavior for the better! Finally, ABB meters feature quality and event log, which helpselectricity companies log over-tension and undertensionvoltage plus breaks in supply.ABB meters meet key regulatory and practical demands forbilling applications8 Electricity meters | 2CMC480022C0003

CommunicationCommunication is getting more important every day.Computers and telecommunications drive the developmentof both technology and infrastructure for communication.Communication is widely used in modern meteringapplications.Increasing demands on integration of meter dataNot long ago, meters were considered to be stand aloneproducts, read manually a few times per year. This is not trueanymore. Today, there is a high demand of integration of meterdata into metering data systems for evaluation and for controlof processes. There are strong requirements on connectingactions, e.g. start of equipment etc, to its consequences, anincrease of energy consumption. It is only by linking theseactions and consequences that we will get tools that are powerfulenough for increasing the energy efficiency and changingbehavior of the users.Open standardsOpen standards are important to communication. Through openstandards, equipment from various suppliers can work togetherand safe solutions be implemented.Flexible ABB solutionABB has adopted a flexible solution for communication enablingall their electricity meters. A serial communication adapter canbe connected to any ABB meter through an infrared interfaceon the side of both the meter and the adapter. This solutionenables any ABB meter to be connected to a metering systemand it is easy to change or upgrade the communication withoutaffecting the installation of the meter itself. Further, a change ofthe communication adapter does not effect the approval of themeter.New technologiesCommunication is developing with new technologies evolvingall the time. New affordable equipment builds up the infrastructure, whether it is within the internet, telecom or other. Meteringdata is nowadays frequently communicated via LANs and cellphone networks.2CMC480022C0003| Electricity meters 9

DELTAmaxDescriptionTariffsThe DELTAmax range includes meters for 2 and 4 tariffs. The tariffsare controlled via internal clock or via communication.InstrumentationThrough the instrumentation functionality of DELTAmax, the following electrical properties can be read• Active power (per phase and total)• Apparent power (per phase and total)• Reactive power (per phase and total)• Current (per phase)• Voltage (per phase)• Frequency• Power factor• Active quadrant• Total current harmonic distortionInputs and outputsThe DELTAplus is an advanced four quadrant meter forinstallation in three phase networks. The meter is mountedon a DIN rail and is suitable for installation in distributionboards and small enclosures such as consumer units. Themeter measures active or combined (active and reactive)energy. The product supports a wide voltage range and awide temperature range which makes it suitable for installationin many applications.General featuresDELTAmax has a lot of functionality. The built-in clock function isused to log meter data in a load profile or control the setting oftariffs. It is easy to read the large LCD display with 7 mm high digitsand symbols for load indication, errors etc. The meter has LED onthe front that flashes proportionally to the measured energy. Theenergy consumption of the meter is very low, less than 0.6 VA.CommunicationData from DELTAmax is collected via pulse output or serialcommunication. The pulse output is a polarity independentsolid state relay that generates pulses proportionally to themeasured energy. DELTAmax can be equipped with a built-incommunication interface for M-Bus. All DELTAmax meters comewith an infrared port for communication with an external SerialCommunication Adapter (SCA). There are SCAs for M-Bus,RS-232, Ethernet and GSM/GPRS.DELTAmax support two I/O’s. It can be two inputs or twooutputs or one of each. Outputs can be used for controllingexternal apparatus like a contactor or an alarm (max 120 mA).Inputs can be used for counting pulses from e.g. a water meter,or for reading status from external devices.ConfigurationThe configuration of DELTAmax is simple. Using the two buttonsscroll and set you can configure transformer ratio, pulsefrequency, M-Bus address and baud rate when applicable. Thetwo push buttons are under a sealable cover. When they aresealed, the scroll eye on the front of the meter can be used forreading the parameters and also instrument values.InstallationDELTAmax comes with an automatic installation check thatindicates problems in the installation.ApprovalDELTAmax is type approved according to IEC and it is bothtype approved and verified according to MID. MID is theMeasuring Instruments Directive 2004/22/EC from the EuropeanCommission. MID type approval and verification is mandatoryfor meters in billing applications within EU and EEA.The type approval is according to standards that covers allrelevant technical aspects of the meter. These include climateconditions, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electricalrequirements, mechanical requirements and accuracy.2CMC480022C0003| Electricity meters 35

DELTAmaxSpecial features - RTC, PV, LP, MD, log and THDDELTAmax has an internal clock that handles a number oftime dependent functions such as load profile, maximumdemand, previous values, event and quality log, time controlledoutputs and tariffs. The data from these functionsare only readable via serial communication. When all availablememory for a time dependent function is used, theoldest data record for that function will be over-written.Changing interval length or number of values to stored ina function will reset all values stored.Internal clockThe internal clock, sometimes called real time clock or RTC, hasa built-in calendar and keeps automatically track of leap year anddaylight savings time (DST). The DST function is optional.Backup of the clock during a power failure is provided by a supercapacitor. The time is controlled from a quartz crystal based clock..Time and date is set via push buttons or via communication. The internal clock is approved according to IEC 62052-21 andIEC 62054-21. These standards specify the requirements for timeswitches in electricity meter related products. The accuracy isbetter than 5 ppm at room temperature.Previous valuesThe previous value feature will store all energy registers and inputcounter values together with a date/time stamp upon change ofday or month. All total values are stored and in meters equippedwith the tariff feature all the tariff registers will also be stored.Load ProfileThe load profile stores the energy consumption at pre-definedintervals. The interval lengths are 15, 30 or 60 minutes. The defaultvalue is 60 minutes. The quantities that can be stored for each interval are active andreactive energy, both imported and exported energy, and thenumber of pulses registered on input 1 and 2. Storage of reactiveenergy is only possible on meters measuring combined energyand storing of pulses requires that the meter is equipped with thecorresponding number of inputs. The load profile function uses the standard time setting irrespectiveif the daylight savings time function is activated or not.Maximum DemandIn the maximum demand function, the mean power in each intervalis measured and the maximum mean values are stored togetherwith a date/time stamp. The interval lengths are 15, 30 or 60 minutes. The default value is 15 minutes. For each set of maximum demand values the end date/time ofthe period is stored. The quantities that can be stored for each interval are active andreactive energy (imported energy only), and the number of pulsesregistered on input 1 and 2. Storage of reactive energy is onlypossible on meters measuring combined energy and storing ofpulses requires that the meter is equipped with the correspondingnumber of inputs. In tariff meters, the maximum demand is storedfor each tariff.Event logThe event log function logs the following events:• Overvoltage on each phase (+6%)• Undervoltage level 1 on each phase (-10%)• Undervoltage level 2 on each phase (-15%)• Phase voltage outage (-15%)• Negative power• Total power outage• Presence of current harmonicsFor the over- and undervoltage events a percentage level withrespect to a nominal voltage is given which is programmable. Thephase voltage outage level use the same level as undervoltagelevel 2. The negative power event will be logged if abnormalnegative power is detected. For current harmonics a percentage level for the total harmonicdistorsion of the harmonics measured can be set and the eventwill be logged if that limit is exceeded.THDThe current harmonics (2-9) together with the fundamental ismeasured sequentially one at a time (approximately 1 harmoniceach second). The total current harmonic distortion of the harmonicsmeasured is displayed in percent. The separate harmonicfrequencies measured are multiples of the fundamental frequency(normally around 50 or 60 Hz) up to the 9th harmonic but nothigher than 500 Hz. At 60 Hz for example the 9th harmonic willhave frequency 540 Hz and will then not be measured.THD data is displayed on the LCD. THD data and data for individualharmonics can be read out via serial communication.36 Electricity meters | 2CMC480022C0003

DELTAmaxGeneric information - Time dependent functionsInternal clock and time dependantfunctionsDELTAmax meter has an internal clock that keeps track of thedate and time and is equipped with various time dependantfunctions such as load profile, maximum demand, previousvalues, event log, outputs controlled by time and in tariffs. The tariffs are normally controlled via the internal clock (noexternal time switch required). The previous values, load profile, maximum demand and theevent log functions are only readable via bus.Changing the default settings of these functions are only possibleby serial communication. If the time and date are not set no values will be registered. If all the memory available for a time dependant function isused, the oldest recorded data for that function will be overwritten.Changing interval length or number of values to be storedfor a function will reset all values stored.Internal clockThe internal clock has a built in calendar and keeps automaticallytrack of leap year and daylight savings time (DST).DST function is optional.Backup of the clock during a power failure is provided by asupcapacitor. The time is controlled from a quartz crystal basedreal time clock. Time and date is set via the buttons or via communications. The internal clock is approved according to IEC 62052-21and IEC 62054-21 which contains particular requirements fortime switches. The stated accuracy is less than 5 ppm at roomtemperature when controlled from the quartz crystal based realtime clock.Previous valuesThe monthly value feature will store all energy registers andinput counter values altogether with a date/time stamp upon achange of day or month. All total energy values are stored andin meters equipped with the tariff feature all the tariff registerswill also be stored. The number of stored monthly values can beset from 0 to 127.Load profileIn the load profile function each day is divided into intervals ofa certain length where the energy consumption in each intervalis stored. The possible interval lengths are 15, 30 or 60 minutes. The default value is 60 minutes. The quantities that can be stored are active and reactive energywith the number of pulses registered on input 1 and 2. Storageof reactive energy is possible on combined meters only andstoring of pulses requires meters with corresponding input. The load profile function always use standard time irrespectiveif the DST (daylight savings time) function is active or not.Maximum demandIn the maximum demand function the time is divided into intervalsof a certain length and the mean power in each interval ismeasured and the maximum mean value is stored together witha date/time stamp. The possible interval lengths are 15, 30 or60 minutes and is programmable. Default value 15.For each set of maximum demand values the end date/timeof the period is stored. The quantities that can be stored are active and reactive powerand number of pulses registered on input 1 and 2 (pulses/interval).In tariff meters the maximum demand is stored for eachtariff. The maximum number of maximum demand values to be storedare programmable from 0 up to 127.Event logThe event log function can log the following events:• Overvoltage on each phase (+6%)• Undervoltage level 1 on each phase (-10%)• Undervoltage level 2 on each phase (-15%)• Phase voltage outage (-15%)• Negative power• Total power outageFor the over- and undervoltage events a percentage level inrespect to a nominal voltage is given which is programmable. For each registered event the start date/time and the duration(in seconds) is stored. The number of events to be stored are programmable from 0 upto 255.2CMC480022C0003| Electricity meters 41

Measuring Instruments Directive (MID)informationGetting to terms with the MIDThe Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) is a relatively newterm. MID was introduced by the European Commission in2004 to promote the free trade of measuring instrumentsand provide common rules for their use. As European Directive2004/22/EC, MID came fully into force on October 30th,2006.Instruments must meet the essential requirements of thedirective plus one of ten instrument-specific annexes. Forelectricity meters, this is MI-003 (active electrical energymeters). Approval to MID is required for meters used in billingapplications and preferable in many related areas, e.g. jointresidential sourcing.Creates a single EU instrument marketThe aim of the directive is to create a single market in measuringinstruments for the benefit of manufacturers and, ultimately, consumers across Europe. National rules that deviate fromMID are not allowed. With an MID ’European Type ApprovalCertificate’, an instrument can be sold and used in any EU (orEEA) member state.Routes to certificationMID stipulates requirements in three areas; climate conditions(e.g. how different temperature zones affect requirements),mechanical environments and electromagnetic environments.WELMEC, a committee whose principal aim is to establisha harmonized and consistent approach to European legalmetrology (metering), draws up design guidelines for electricitymeters. These are then standardized by CENELEC, theEuropean Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, asstandards EN 50470-1, -2 and -3.Type approval and initial verification via NMiAccording to MID, type approval follows the directive’sAnnex B; the product must fulfill relevant parts of EN 50470and be assessed by a Notified Body that then issues a certificatefor that product. We use NMi, an independent expert formetrology testing, certifying and calibrating, for this task.ABB has selected to do initial verification. This means that allABB meters described here are individually tested to ensurethat they are equivalent to the type approval.Accredited calibration laboratory and audits ensure complianceTo ensure that the calibration and verification of ABB electricitymeters meet MID demands, we have our own accreditedcalibration laboratory that operates under the auspices ofSWEDAC, the Swedish Board for Accreditation and ConformityAssessment. Each meter is stamped with the codeSE1818, showing that it has been calibrated and approved inthis laboratory. Finally, own manufacture with an accredited laboratory andAnnex D approval means that both NMi and SWEDAC performregular audits to ensure that our processes and toolsperform as required.RECOGNISEDCE 074MID makes it clear that there are several ways to certifyproducts such as electricity meters.
