The GDI uses the same formula as the HDI to calculateestimated earned income in order to compare the values, otherwise if a different formula was used itwould be very difficult to draw conclusions from observing the GDI and HDI." Another significant difference in calculating the GDI and GEM in that in the GEM calculationthere is an extra step to compute the equally distributed equivalent percentage (EDEP). The calculatedvalue for each indicator is divided by fifty and the rationale behind this method, “is that in an idealsociety, with equal empowerment of the sexes, the GEM variables would equal 50% that is women’sshare would equal men’s share for each variable”(UNDP, 2008, p. 360).
