GOVERNANCE The Student representative Council has developed a new model for student leadership to be implemented in 2013. REPORT FROM GOVERNING COUNCIL The Governing Council began its 2012 tenure with a Sunday Conference to explore governance and thus build capacity as a Council. The expansion of the school to include a 21 st Century Learning Centre, a 400-‐seat Recital Hall and refurbished Science laboratories began this year with the renovation of Spence Hall. The roof was replaced to eliminate possum entry and subsequent damage. Much of the work on Spence Hall consists of temporary walls and spaces to accommodate a Staffroom, Student Reception, Sick Bays and the Library once the southern wing and the Library are demolished early in 2013 to make way for the 21 st Century Learning Centre. 2012 was Brighton’s 60 th Anniversary and the school community celebrated with a record number of gala events. The Governing Council congratulates the 60 th Anniversary Committee (Old Scholar members: Frances Robertson, John Bligh, Judy Angus, Diana Boyd and Elena DiBez) and school committee members: David Thomson, Lynlee Graham, Debbie Parsons, Jeff Kong, Sue Rodger, Pamela Rajkowski, Peter St. Clair-‐Johnson, Michelle Andersen and Jennifer Panno) for its excellent planning. The SALA (South Australian Living Artists) event entitled, ’60 Diamonds’, brought together artists from the community. Old Scholar and famous sculptor, Greg Johns, presented a humorous speech about the school in the 70s when there was an alleged student coup and a deputy principal locked in a cupboard. Arts Coordinator, Yasmin Paterson, is to be congratulated for coordinating a diverse exhibition of artists and mediums and an enjoyable launch in the Brighton Performing Arts Centre. The 60 th Volleyball event and the 60 th Music Gala brought famous old scholars back to the school who reflected on the past and embraced and celebrated a strong future of music and volleyball at Brighton Secondary. The Year 11 Event Management class raised the time capsule set down in 1986. A new time capsule, containing an amazing collection of today’s objects and works that will be tomorrow’s memories and treasures will be raised in 2052 at the 100 th anniversary. David Thomson, Assistant Principal, and Anna Sapio from Design Notion produced a beautiful 60 th publication collating the history and highlights of the school. The celebrations concluded with a dinner at the Panasonic Pavilion, Morphettville in November with 320 guests, and a high percentage of these from the 1950s. I acknowledge all the volunteers who contribute to our great school and who were honoured at the annual Volunteers’ lunch on Tuesday 13 th November. The Brighton Secondary School community was extremely pleased that the Principal, Olivia O’Neill, was reappointed in 2012 for her second seven-‐year tenure.
