Expectancy – “If we believe you are like it, and we treat you like it,you will become like it.” This is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and this meansthat if people keep expecting people to behave a certain way, they willeventually live up to that expectation.Competency and the developmental model – This refers to thebelief, and expectation, that all people can grow and develop.Participation and integration – All people should participate withintheir community in a positive way. Community expectations of peoplewith a disability are reduced if they are not seen as positivelyparticipating in the community.Modeling – Modeling is one of the most powerful ways in which peoplelearn. People learn from others through observing how someone elseresponds to a particular situation, and how someone relates to anotherperson. <strong>Disability</strong> <strong>Support</strong> <strong>Workers</strong> are role models for the person theysupport and also to the wider community.Relationships – All people need positive relationships. Having positiverelationships mean that there are people who have a genuine interest inthe person‟s welfare and this can prevent bad things happening to thatperson.Positive Compensation – Is about doing what you can to preventfurther devaluation. People who are viewed as devalued are at a greaterrisk of further devaluation.
