Why Carers need respiteRespite is defined as a delay or cessation for a time, especially ofanything distressing or trying; an interval of relief. 7 In relation to carers, respite means taking a break from the caring role. The ABS shows thatover 40% of carers provide greater than 40 hours of care per week. 8Taking a break from the caring role ensures that carers are able tocontinue in their caring role by taking a rest from the physical andemotional demands of caring, refreshing their mind and body andhaving time to improve relationships with their partner, other childrenand friends.Caring for a family member with a disability often becomes allencompassing. Many carers find that they become isolated from friendsand other family. Over 50% of primary carers are not in the workforce, therefore reducing their opportunity to interact with work colleagues aswell as their earning capacity. 9In addition to enhancing relationships and building friendships, respitegives carers the opportunity to take a rest from the physical demands ofcaring. Over one third of all carers report that they have on-going neck, back and shoulder injuries. Why are Disability Support Workers needed?
