A growing area within the <strong>SANFL</strong>, the Football Operationsdepartment has been responsible for administering the<strong>SANFL</strong> competition and implementing game developmentprograms in partnership with the <strong>SANFL</strong> clubs and AFL viathe Affiliated Leagues, Umpiring, Participation, Talent, CoachEducation and School and Club programs.The department has enjoyed another successful year withpleasing results obtained in a broad number of areas.Highlights of the <strong>2006</strong> State League competition included:• A competitive, exciting and attacking brand of footballdisplayed by all League Clubs• An average of 30 goals scored per match• 3.5% increase in minor round attendances• South Adelaide competed in the major round for the firsttime in 14 years• Woodville-West Torrens won the premiership for the firsttime since 1993• The State team defeated Western Australia by 17 pointsAt the game development level, <strong>2006</strong> highlights included:• 2.8% increase in total participants• 0.5% increase in AFL Auskick participants• 5.3% increase in Aussie Footy participants (primary school)• 2% increase in Youth Footy participants (secondary school)• 832 Level 1 Coaching Course participants• 10.6% increase in new umpires recruited• Good working relationships with the SAAFL and allmetropolitan and regionally based Affiliated Leagues• Competitive Under-16/18 State Team performances• 15 players drafted to AFL Clubs• 6 players rookie listed by AFL ClubsLooking towards 2007, the Football Operations departmentwill be restructured into two departments, State LeagueCompetition and Game Development and we are determinedS A N F L A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 0 61FOOTBALL OPERATIONSto continue to grow these results whilst maintaining a veryhigh standard at the State League level.PARTICIPATIONTotal participation in Australian football in South Australiain <strong>2006</strong> was 72,040 – an 18.5% increase over the past four years.This number comprises those who were involved in Australianfootball programs and competitions for a minimum of six weeks.AFL AUSKICKAFL Auskick continued to grow with 15,029 childrenparticipating in the <strong>2006</strong> program, a 0.5% increase on 2005.Key features of the <strong>2006</strong> program included:• 2,500 participants attending Adelaide and Port AdelaideFootball Club “Pie Nights”• 1,500 participants playing AFL Auskick grid games at halftimeof AFL matches• 19 participants attending the AFL Grand Final to play halftimegrid games• The “Dipper Roadshow” throughout the Adelaide Hills region• 550 participants involved in the Auskick Parade of FutureChampions at the <strong>SANFL</strong> Grand FinalAUSSIE FOOTY PROGRAMParticipation in Aussie Footy, primary school football, increasedby 5.3% in <strong>2006</strong>. The program, focused on attracting as manyprimary school students as possible to play the game, consists of:Video Ezy Red Rooster Primary School Football Competitions484 teams involving approximately 9,500 students were involvedin Friday afternoon and Saturday morning competitions. S A N F L A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 0 6Video Ezy Red Rooster Coaching Clinics, “Crows in Schools”and Power clinicsOver 150,000 children were involved in the Video Ezy RedRooster Coaching Clinics in <strong>2006</strong>. <strong>SANFL</strong> Development staffand trainees worked in conjunction with the “Crows in Schools”and Port Adelaide school clinic staff to visit metropolitan andcountry schools to deliver the 25-week program.Video Ezy Red Rooster Long Bomb & Kick-to-Kick CompetitionApproximately 200 schools, involving 18,000 participants, tookpart in internal school trials of Long Bomb and Kick-to-Kickcompetitions in <strong>2006</strong>. Winners from each school attended oneof the 27 regional finals, with 320 children attending the Statefinal held at AAMI Stadium.Video Ezy Red Rooster School Holiday Coaching ClinicsOver 2,400 children participated in the <strong>2006</strong> Video Ezy RedRooster School Holiday Coaching Clinics. All nine <strong>SANFL</strong>Clubs hosted clinics, with local <strong>SANFL</strong> and AFL playersinvolved in the fun, quality coaching sessions.Coca-Cola Mini LeagueOver 4,000 senior primary school children participated in theCoca-Cola Mini League and AFL Auskick exhibition games athalf-time of <strong>SANFL</strong> matches in <strong>2006</strong>. Each <strong>SANFL</strong> Clubinvited 20 players to participate in the Coca-Cola KnockoutCup held during the <strong>SANFL</strong> finals.AFL Little LeagueThe AFL Little League program provided 800 senior primaryschool footballers from around the state the opportunity torepresent an AFL team and play at half-time during AFLmatches at AAMI Stadium.YOUTH FOOTBALL PROGRAMThe <strong>SANFL</strong> Youth Program provides secondary schoolstudents opportunities to play competitive football in either amodified format or in inter-school competitions. Participationincreased by 2% in <strong>2006</strong>. The program consists of:Video Ezy Red Rooster Twilight CupDeveloped to give Year 9 and 10 students the opportunity toplay in a ‘pre-season’ competition, the Twilight Cup has nowbecome a highlight of the Youth Football Program. Sixteenteams comprising 200 participants were involved in Southern,Northern and Eastern zone competitions.Video Ezy Red Rooster Nine-A-Side CarnivalsNine-A-Side carnivals continue to be popular with secondaryschool boys, girls in Years 8 and 9 and senior girls. Thirtythreecarnivals, involving 4,000 participants, were heldthroughout the state during the school year.<strong>SANFL</strong> / SASSSA Knockout CompetitionsThe <strong>SANFL</strong> and the South Australian Secondary SchoolsSports Association continue to work together to offer a stateknockout competition for secondary schools. 183 teamscompeted in seven different categories in <strong>2006</strong>. Regionalgames were played at venues across SA, with winnersadvancing to the State finals held at Coopers Stadium andBroadspectrum Oval.SEPEP (Sport Education in Physical Education Program)The SEPEP, promoted by <strong>SANFL</strong> Development staff in primaryschools, encourages students to not only play football, buttake on leadership, administration and umpiring roles withina football competition.AFL RECREATIONAL FOOTBALLAFL Recreational Football continued to gain momentum in<strong>2006</strong>, its second year, with six competitions involving 400players.
