Additionally, UWM is expanding its facilities through various projects throughout Milwaukee Countythat promise to provide exciting new opportunities for graduate research and education in the nearfuture. Recent expansion projects include a Milwaukee harbor research center for the new School ofFreshwater Sciences, the only school of its kind in the U.S.; the new Joseph J. Zilber School of PublicHealth in Downtown Milwaukee, which is the first comprehensive, dedicated school of public health inWisconsin; and the Kenwood Integrated Research Complex in the heart of our main campus,representing a new state investment of $140 million. UWM has also begun construction of a newInnovation Research Park adjacent to the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center and Milwaukee CountyResearch Park that will provide collaborative laboratories for connecting academic medical research andpractice together with business enterprises in order to develop new innovations in biomedicalengineering.Challenges and OpportunitiesThe UWM Graduate School is a distinctive, vital school with a history of sustained, high qualityacademic programs, an outstanding faculty, and exceptional engagement with the community. At thiscritical stage of leadership transition, the Graduate School will need to engage both opportunities andchallenges over the next several years as it seeks to strengthen its services to students, the University, thecommunity, and the state and region. The Dean of the Graduate School must possess a keen awarenessof the promise and context of graduate programs in public universities. As a public urban campus, UWMis unique in the University of Wisconsin System, charged with the dual mission of a PhD-grantinginstitution combined with the commitment to provide full engagement with the local community. Thenew Dean will need to address the following issues, among others:• Strategic Directions. The wide array of graduate programs, some unique, are at once its greateststrengths and challenges. The University has many distinguished faculty and strong top-tierprograms. The Dean will help to sustain those programs and help other programs reach a similarstatus. At the same time, each discipline has the potential to benefit through achieving greaterengagement and synergy with other fields across the University.• Investing in Talent. Faced with budget and fiscal challenges common to many other publicinstitutions, the Graduate School will need to strive to sustain a talented and committed facultyas well as recruit a strong student body across all disciplines represented in the University.• Generating New Resources. The new Dean, together with the University as a whole, will need anexuberant, collaborative, and diverse approach to secure external support to meet the GraduateSchool’s core needs. The Dean will seek to generate revenue through courses, degrees, programs,and research consonant with statewide plans for increased enrollment and economicdevelopment, while ensuring a continued focus on the Graduate School’s core mission topromote integrity and excellence in education and academic research.• Strengthening Diversity. UWM has made a commitment to diversity and values the gains it hasmade, but achieving full diversity remains challenging. The Dean will take a lead role instrengthening the recruitment of students, faculty, and staff to enhance diversity.8
ResponsibilitiesThe Dean is expected to provide leadership for the academic and research mission of the GraduateSchool. This includes helping to build and support faculty scholarship, leading to the recruitment anddevelopment of a strong graduate student base. The Dean will exercise responsibility for the GraduateSchool’s academic and administrative operations, including personnel, budget, programs, and physicalfacilities. The successful candidate will work closely with the Vice Provost for Research to envision andimplement a mission of fundamental and applied research and scholarship. Areas of responsibilityinclude: developing and leading graduate programs across all of the university’s disciplinary areas,recruiting a diverse and international student body; enhancement of research; reviewing programs; andthe expansion of extramural funding sources in support of graduate students. The Dean will also beresponsible for developing strong relationships with external constituents, maintaining effectivepartnerships campus wide, and the dynamic representation of the Graduate School within the Universityand the community.QualificationsThe position of Dean of the Graduate School requires an earned doctoral degree as well as adistinguished academic record commensurate with a tenured appointment as a full professor of adepartment in the University. Evidence of a commitment to shared governance, the capacity to providestrong academic leadership, and relevant administrative experience is required.Candidates with evidence of strengths in the following areas will be preferred:1. Promotion of excellence in graduate education with particular knowledge of and experience in theoperations of graduate degree-granting programs.2. Understanding of and commitment to the needs of the wide variety of graduate programs anddisciplines across the university.3. Commitment to and capacity for leadership in the sustained development of scholarly research and aresearch support infrastructure in the Graduate School.4. Support of efforts to recruit and retain students from groups under-represented with respect to racial/ethnic identity, gender, sexual orientation, and first-generation/economic disadvantage. Thisincludes commitment to support programs that prepare students for graduate training.5. Effective management, communication, and interpersonal skills to provide administrative leadershipin working with faculty, academic staff and classified staff at all levels of the organization.6. Ability to develop human, financial, and physical resources of the Graduate School.7. Ability to develop and maintain partnerships and connections within the university, the community,and other educational institutions.8. Commitment to fundraising and alumni relations, particularly financial support for graduateeducation.9. Commitment to strengthening support for graduate student funding.10. Continuing record of research in the candidate’s field.9
