Additionally, <strong>UW</strong>M is expanding its facilities through various projects throughout <strong>Milwaukee</strong> Countythat promise to provide exciting new opportunities for graduate research and education in <strong>the</strong> nearfuture. Recent expansion projects include a <strong>Milwaukee</strong> harbor research center for <strong>the</strong> new <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>Freshwater Sciences, <strong>the</strong> only school <strong>of</strong> its kind in <strong>the</strong> U.S.; <strong>the</strong> new Joseph J. Zilber <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> PublicHealth in Downtown <strong>Milwaukee</strong>, which is <strong>the</strong> first comprehensive, dedicated school <strong>of</strong> public health inWisconsin; and <strong>the</strong> Kenwood Integrated Research Complex in <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> our main campus,representing a new state investment <strong>of</strong> $140 million. <strong>UW</strong>M has also begun construction <strong>of</strong> a newInnovation Research Park adjacent to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Milwaukee</strong> Regional Medical Center and <strong>Milwaukee</strong> CountyResearch Park that will provide collaborative laboratories for connecting academic medical research andpractice toge<strong>the</strong>r with business enterprises in order to develop new innovations in biomedicalengineering.Challenges and OpportunitiesThe <strong>UW</strong>M <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> is a distinctive, vital school with a history <strong>of</strong> sustained, high qualityacademic programs, an outstanding faculty, and exceptional engagement with <strong>the</strong> community. At thiscritical stage <strong>of</strong> leadership transition, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> will need to engage both opportunities andchallenges over <strong>the</strong> next several years as it seeks to streng<strong>the</strong>n its services to students, <strong>the</strong> University, <strong>the</strong>community, and <strong>the</strong> state and region. The <strong>Dean</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> must possess a keen awareness<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> promise and context <strong>of</strong> graduate programs in public universities. As a public urban campus, <strong>UW</strong>Mis unique in <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin System, charged with <strong>the</strong> dual mission <strong>of</strong> a PhD-grantinginstitution combined with <strong>the</strong> commitment to provide full engagement with <strong>the</strong> local community. Thenew <strong>Dean</strong> will need to address <strong>the</strong> following issues, among o<strong>the</strong>rs:• Strategic Directions. The wide array <strong>of</strong> graduate programs, some unique, are at once its greateststrengths and challenges. The University has many distinguished faculty and strong top-tierprograms. The <strong>Dean</strong> will help to sustain those programs and help o<strong>the</strong>r programs reach a similarstatus. At <strong>the</strong> same time, each discipline has <strong>the</strong> potential to benefit through achieving greaterengagement and synergy with o<strong>the</strong>r fields across <strong>the</strong> University.• Investing in Talent. Faced with budget and fiscal challenges common to many o<strong>the</strong>r publicinstitutions, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> will need to strive to sustain a talented and committed facultyas well as recruit a strong student body across all disciplines represented in <strong>the</strong> University.• Generating New Resources. The new <strong>Dean</strong>, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> University as a whole, will need anexuberant, collaborative, and diverse approach to secure external support to meet <strong>the</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong><strong>School</strong>’s core needs. The <strong>Dean</strong> will seek to generate revenue through courses, degrees, programs,and research consonant with statewide plans for increased enrollment and economicdevelopment, while ensuring a continued focus on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s core mission topromote integrity and excellence in education and academic research.• Streng<strong>the</strong>ning Diversity. <strong>UW</strong>M has made a commitment to diversity and values <strong>the</strong> gains it hasmade, but achieving full diversity remains challenging. The <strong>Dean</strong> will take a lead role instreng<strong>the</strong>ning <strong>the</strong> recruitment <strong>of</strong> students, faculty, and staff to enhance diversity.8
