MF 7200New Beta models forall kinds of crops andconditionsNEW COMBINES JOIN THE FLEET FOR 2005New Activa and Beta mid-range combinesfurther boost Massey Ferguson’sharvesting lexicon. The three-model Activa rangeis aimed at small to medium-sized mixed andfamily farms while the four-model Beta is idealfor medium to large-scale operators andcontractors. These join the flagship MF Cereaseries to produce a broad and highly-competitiveharvesting line-up for the 2005 season.Activa and Beta models share key componentsin common including the cutting table, strawwalker design, straw chopper and grain tank. The Freeflow cutting table features a weldedframe to which bolt-on panels (such as the tablebottom plates) are mounted, thereby making itextremely easy to replace panels when necessary.Cutting duty is carried out by a self-cleaningSchumacher knife and gearbox. The cut crop feedsinto a large diameter table auger fitted withfeathering fingers along its whole length to ensurea positive feed of crop into the main crop elevator. The auger is protected by a slip clutch, and reeladjustment is electro-hydraulically controlled withspeed changes made via a variator unit on theleft-hand side of the table. Automatic cutting heightcontrol is standard on all Activa and Beta machinesto maximise cutting performance over all terrain.MF’s Autolevel feature - which allows the tableto follow changes in land contour of up to 8% -Separation and cleaning of crop on both theBeta and Activa models are carried out withclosed bottom-design straw walkers. These havefour steps and are equipped with punched grid‘active walls’ to give extra open surface area formore efficient separation. A full width electricallyadjustablefan provides clean air to the highperformance sieves ensuring an excellent grainsample in all conditions.Straw choppers feature serrated knives to givea clean chop and reduce the power requirement. The fully-adjustable shearbar, stationary knivesand straw chopper hood ensure completecontrol over the quality and spread of thechopped straw.Grain tanks offer plenty of capacity and, withunloading rates of 105 l/sec on the Beta and 85l/sec on the Activa, you can spend more timeharvesting.Beta - all kinds of crops, allkinds of conditionsFrom dry cereal to wet rice, the 275-305 hpBeta models will deliver top performance in ahuge variety of crops and conditions.A powerfeed roller fitted between the tableand the main crop elevator gives a more evencrop flow and reduces the power required tothresh the crop. The powered roller alsodistributes the crop across the full width of theelevator to maximise the potential of thethreshing unit.High performance threshing is guaranteed withthe well-proven high inertia cylinder and heavyduty concave featuring adjustable speed. A rotaryseparator is also fitted. Uniquely, when conditionsdo not require the extra separation it provides, itcan be disabled. This is achieved by the rotation ofits concave up over the top of its separator drum. This in turn enables the drum to become anadditional rear beater providing the operator withmore flexibility to optimise the grain sample andcombine performance in dry harvesting conditions.Power is provided by electronically-controlledSisu engines, while the transmission features afour-speed hydrostatic unit to deliver all thepower you need for flexible harvesting. The Beta combine’s high calibre XLR cabguarantees a comfortable harvest. It comes withthe table is complemented by the ergonomiclayout of the monitors and controls. TheAgritronicplus monitor provides a full range ofharvesting information to maximise harvestingpotential.Customers can choose between standard andAutolevel (AL) versions. Equipped with floatingfinal drives, the Autolevel rump can level laterallyacross slopes up to 20%, and vertically up anddown slopes up to 8%. Both Autolevel modelscome with 4WD as standard to offer positivesteering control in difficult conditions.Activa - straightforwardtechnology for cost effectiveharvestingFrom finest grass seed to cereals, maize andsunflower, no-nonsense harvesting all season longis promised with the 220-255 hp Activa range. In addition to the separation and cleaningfeatures described above, the Activa machinesboast an Active Beater Concave located at therear of the main concave under the rear beater. This combination unit provides an extra 14degrees of concave wrap giving even morethreshing output. It also controls straw flow ontothe walkers from the rear beater and is adjustabledepending on the straw length and moisture level. This gives the ability to optimise the flow of strawonto the straw walkers thereby achieving as muchseparation as possible.Latest generation electronically-controlled Ivecoengines provide the power source, while thetransmission boasts a three-speed hydrostatic unit. The command centre of the Activa combineis the XL cab. Mounted on rubber blocks toeliminate vibration and noise, the XL cab offersProducing 70 x 120 cm bales, the MF 186 isthe latest addition to Massey Ferguson’srange of high-capacity large rectangular balers.Manufactured at the US plant in Hesston, Kansas,New Model Line-upModel hp no. straw walkers grain tank capacity(litres)MF 7244 Activa 220 5 7000MF 7245 Activa 255 5 7000MF 7246 Activa 255 6 7500MF 7260 Beta 275 5 9000MF 7260 AL Beta 275 5 8200MF 7270 Beta 305 6 9000MF 7270 AL Beta 305 6 8200* Cutting table widths: 4.20-6.60moperator comforts such as air conditioning, heating, deluxe suspended seat and electricmirrors as standard. Cornish Caulisare big businessThis MF 6170 clockedup more than7,000hrs on limespreading, beforemoving back tofarmwork where it isseen here plantingcauliflower.Cauliflower production is a big and serious business in Cornwall, England. With itsmild climate and lengthy coastline, the county is the ideal location for growing thishigh value vegetable. But, as Mick Roberts - who went to see how a new MF 6480was settling in at Churchtown Farm - reports, the process all starts with thecorrect soil conditions. In Cornish vernacular a cauliflower is called‘Broc-lee’ (Broccoli) which can cause ‘incomers’slight confusion. But whatever thename, the crop is a bit of a local and nationalsuccess story. The county’s location provides it with a mildclimate and its close proximity to the sea virtuallyguarantees frost-free fields. And Cornwall has alot of coastline, being joined to England on onlyone border, with the rest of the land surroundedby water. This keeps the soil warm and meansany frosts (that occur rarely) are unlikely todamage the extremely cold-sensitive caulis.“In the past few years we have really got thejob sorted out,” explains Jonathan James, wholooks after the farming side of the James’ familyenterprise based at Churchtown Farm, Gwithian, near Hayle on the North Cornish coast. “Whilewe have been growing cauliflower and brassicashere for sixty plus years, the demands of thesupermarkets for continuous year-round supplieswere making it increasingly difficult for us tosupply them.”“Now with other Cornish growers we havejoined with other producers and packhouses inLincolnshire and we can now provide a supplyall year round,” he explains. The James family farms a total of about 320haand grow about 72ha of cauliflower in a rotationthat also includes winter and spring barley and, uncommon for the region, sugar beet. This isunusual because the closest factory is 300 milesaway in the county of Shropshire - about an eighthourjourney by lorry. But hauling the crop sucha long distance is not a problem becauseJonathan’s uncle, Anthony James, runs thetransport business that not only moves their owncrops, but also hauls fresh vegetables out of thecounty and backhauls loads such as lime andanimal feed back down south.Lime is an important ingredient in the growingprocess because the correct soil pH conditionsare required for efficient cauliflower production.Again the family firm has this covered with itsown contract lime-spreading business run byAdrian James - Anthony’s son. This business has grown steadily since thefamily began fulfilling a need for a specialist limesupplier and applicator in the county. Adrian nowworks 6/7 days a week for about six months ofthe year applying lime over about 2000ha/yr.“The biggest difficulty is the small fields, someless than 1ha, and the wide geographical spreadof the farms. I can often cover up to 100 miles(160 km) a day round trip travelling betweendifferent locations,” explains Adrian. This high workload, not surprisingly, puts highdemands on both Adrian and his tractor. For thepast five years he has been using an MF 6170,but with 7500hr on the clock the family decidedto buy a replacement for this season. With thisMassey Ferguson providing such excellent serviceAdrian James says the extra power of the MF 6480,combined with the comfort from cab and front-axlesuspensions, helps to increase outputs by 20-30%.and good relations with local dealer, Phil Symons,of Symons Agricultural in Hayle, it’s not surprisingthat’s where they turned for a replacement.“We needed a tractor of a similar physical size, but with more power to cope with hilly fieldsand roadwork. The MF 6480 fits the bill perfectly, because although it’s 145hp, it is compact andeasily manoeuvred in the fields and particularlythrough the ancient narrow gateways,” explainsAdrian. For Adrian to achieve the workrates neededto fulfil his demanding schedule, he aims tooperate at in-field speeds of 9mph (14 kph). Thetrouble is most of the application work is onfreshly ploughed land either rolled or unrolled.Comfort is an obvious requirement. “While Idon’t currently suffer back problems, I have tothink of my long-term health,” he adds.Adrian James spends more than 12 hours a day formonths on end lime spreading and finds the new MFcab a quiet and exceptionally comfortable workplace.Size is not always everything! Although the MF 6480has a 145hp engine, its compact dimensions are idealfor working in Cornwall’s small fields and gateways.Dealer Phil Symons recommended theComfort Plus Package that includes the DualStage suspended cab with super deluxe airsuspension seat and, among other ‘extras’, airconditioning. For further comfort and control Philalso suggested the performance enhancingTransport Package option, which included theQuadlink front axle suspension, power boostengine and engine speed control.“We have worked with Phil Symons for aboutsix or seven years and his workshop staff arespot-on, providing really good service and backup. It was also really helpful having Phil not onlyexplain the various options, but also being ableto virtually tailor-make the tractor to meet ourexact specifications. As well as the comfort sideof things we also require land drive PTO to powerthe spreader’s wheels. This is important toimprove traction in the field and prevent scuffingand compaction. Again this wasn’t a problem forMF. I do know some other tractor manufacturersdon’t even offer this, let alone as a simple ‘tickbox’ option,” explains Adrian. The extra power of the MF 6480 combinedwith its cab and axle suspension, offeringimproved operator comfort, has lifted Adrian’soverall outputs by between 20% to 30%.“This is simply because I can cover more groundin the field and move between jobs more quickly. The power boost engine helps on road transportand steep hills, and the cab comfort is simplysuperb. The cab is also incredibly quiet. I operateat about 1800rpm and at that speed you struggleto hear the engine working,” he adds! Adrian hasclocked on average 180-200 hours a month.Like most skilled operators Adrian makes hisjob look simple. But, as other drivers know, itnever is as easy as it looks. Firstly he reverses thespreader under the lime delivery truck’s tailgatewith just millimetres to spare. In first time - everytime. Then it’s off to the field, again negotiatingthe tractor and spreader through extremelyFront axle suspension has made all the difference tocomfort and output when applying lime at high speedson ploughed fields.Into work and a combination of quick, skilledhands and the tractor’s automated features seesthe spreader in action in a matter of seconds.Adrian flicks the tractor into four-wheel driveand then engages ground speed PTO that putsthe spreader axle into gear. The first spool valvelever opens the spreader door, and then with aflick of the second spool lever, the machine’slandwheel drive lowers to engage with the tyreto drive the delivery belt. The third spool putsthe spinner motors into work. Engine speedmemories (that come with the power boostengine option) are set at 1800rpm for fieldworkand a lower speed for headland turns. The tractor’s Dynashift ECO transmission hasthe AutoDrive (option) that changes speedsrelative to engine load and speed. AlthoughAdrian can select Speed Matching, Power orEconomy Modes he tends to switch this off inthe field because the lengths of the bouts areusually so short. In Power Mode the transmissionautomatically changes up at 2100rpm, or at1700rpm in the Economy setting. He tends touse both Economy and Power on the road, depending on the terrain and what he is hauling.so easy to use. I tend to operate the transmissionmanually, because this suits the way I work andthe nature of the job,” he adds.“Overall I feel the tractor is a good package. My potential output is just getting better andbetter. The Drebes’ new MF7490 was purchasedfrom dealer H.KrummelLandmaschinen.Dyna-VT steps up mowing outputSince the arrival of a new MF 7490 Dyna-VTtractor, Wilhelm Drebes has boosted hismowing output by 20%.The German farmer was the first MF 7400customer in the Federal State of Hessen and isfull of praise for the machine’s straightforwardoperation.Wilhelm farms a 150 ha mixed enterpriseincluding a 90-strong dairy herd. “We use themachine for general farm work and are veryhappy with it - it’s exceeded all our expectations,”he explains. When News@MF caught up with him, thetractor had clocked up 325 hours. Mowingoperations on the farm have been significantlyimproved thanks to the ‘forager mode’ available“We didn’t remove a single screw on theengine or driveline of our 10-year-oldMF 3075 even though it clocked up over 14 500hours and we used it almost daily to haul ourhigh-output tanker,” says Karl Gabriel. As a resultof this experience, an MF 7480 is the latestmachine to join his municipal operations businessin Austria.“Such a high degree of reliability is typical ofMF tractors,” he continues. He bought his firstMF - a 135 - in 1967 and has since owned an MF165, MF 188 (11 000 hours) and MF 3065(7000 hours).with the Dyna-VT constantly variabletransmission Through this, engine speed is setto the speed of the PTO via the Engine SpeedControl memory. This enables operators to varythe tractor’s forward speed with the hand or footthrottle to match grass conditions and ensureperfect working quality. The tractor is driven by three generations ofthe Drebes family and everyone appreciates thehigh level of operator comfort thanks to theunique Dual Stage cab, front axle suspension andextremely quiet working environment. There’s more praise too for the tractor’s fueleconomy which, according to Wilhelm, averages12-13 litres an hour in normal conditions.FATHER AND SON TEAMOPT FOR MF 7400SERIOUSPULLING POWER!In Austria, MF’s Dyna-VT transmission is cominginto its own for heavy-duty transport workpulling loads up to 90 tonnes on a purpose-builtflatbed trailer.Seen here hauling a crane component weighing45 tonnes, this MF 7495 is being evaluated byLiebherr, one of the world’s largest manufacturersof construction machinery for use at its plant inVorarlberg. The key benefit of Dyna-VT in this situation isits ability to pull a very heavy load from standstillto the desired speed without the need to changeany gears or use the clutch. Added to that, youonly have to use as many engine revs as arerequired. The result? Complete driver control plussimple and safe operation.trimming, snow clearing and sewage clearancefor which they employ a 10 000 l tanker. With their work involving a myriad pushingand pulling cycles, constantly variable transmission- such as the MF 7480’s Dyna-VT - is thepreferred option for the Gabriels as it is easy tofind the optimum speed for maximum tractionleaving the driver to concentrate on other aspectsof the job.Werner, who trained in agricultural engineering, tested several makes of tractor with CVT butopted for the MF model because of itsstraightforward operation via a single joystick orfoot pedal. That plus their long-term experienceof MF dependability and the back-up of localdealer BayWaLamag Technik and distributorAustro Diesel made the choice an easy one.MF 5455 fulfils the wish listSofia Barreng reports from Sweden whereinvestment in a new MF 5400 Series tractor signals thebeginning of a new era for one family farm.White stemmed birches, a dwindling dirtroad, here and there the glimmer ofblue lakes; sparsely dotted around the edges ofsmall fields are the typical red wooden houses. This is Swedish countryside at its very best.In the middle of this idyllic setting lives theCarlsson family. They have been farmers forgenerations and, thanks to their son’s decisionto join them, are now owners of a brand new100 hp MF 5455.Eskil Carlsson farms 60 hectares including aherd of 33 dairy cows. Finede Farm is in thesouthern part of Sweden and the nearest townis Vimmerby, famous for Astrid Lindgren, thecreator of children’s storybook heroine, PippiLongstocking.Farming in this part of the country is mainlyabout livestock and dairy production. The land isnot really suitable for arable farming and only ina good year does Eskil’s farm yield enough tokeep his herd in feed grain. Most farmers workthe winters in the forest producing timber forthe paper industry and for the famous flat-packedhouses that are manufactured in the area. Andyes; this is not far from where the world-leadingfurniture company IKEA started!Over the years Eskil has run Finede virtually solo. His wife Anne-Marie is a nurse and works outsidethe farm. But it’s been all change since their son,Magnus decided to move back home and farm withhis dad after finishing agricultural college. The extra pair of hands is welcome as yearsof milking have taken its toll on Eskil’s knees.“Had it not been for Magnus coming home, Iwould have had to get rid of the cows soon,”explains Eskil. “The work is too much for me now.”But, instead of selling off, the Carlsson family isnow investing in new kit - hence the latestMF 5455.The Carlssons started their search for a newtractor by putting together a wish list. Theywanted a 100 plus hp tractor with front loader,clutch-free forward/reverse shuttle and climatecontrol. They contacted four different dealers andit soon became clear that the MF 5455 ticked alltheir boxes. After a test drive, the decision wassealed and the machine ordered.“Not only were technical specificationsimportant but the price had to be right and itwas also vital to be able to get the tractorserviced within an hour’s driving distance.” saysEskil. When ordering they couldn’t help but put ina few extra goodies including a joystick for thefront loader, bigger tyres, extra lights and a CDplayer. The Carlssons harvest 40 hectares for silage, producing around 800 bales a year. The bales arewrapped back at the farmstead with a stationaryelectrically-driven wrapper. One of the chief duties of the new MF 5455 isoperation of the mower conditioner and alsobale handling. Magnus is well pleased with thefront loader’s joystick control and the ease withwhich he can change direction using the shuttle.“And the tractor is very stable - always standingfirmly on the ground even if I put it to the limitdoing loader work,” he comments. The low bonnet provides good visibility - areal advantage when doing a lot of front loaderwork - and although Eskil and Magnus did notopt for the Visio roof for better visibility, theyfind the conventional roof works well for them.Power for pullingAnother aspect of the tractor appreciated bythe Carlssons is its strength and power to pullbig trailers during the silage harvest. The fields inthis area are rather hilly and it takes both stabilityand power to manage the job.Come autumn the MF 5455 will turn into areal workhorse and embark on ploughing.Around 25 hectares are cultivated each year toproduce oats, barley and triticale.“We did try direct drilling,” remarks Eskil, “butstopped because the contractor we used alwaysput us last on his list because we arecomparatively small.”However, being small has not stopped Eskiland Magnus Carlsson from investing in a brandnew machine for their farm. As Magnus puts it:“It’s great to be able to invest in one of the latesttractors and move forward even if dad is not theyoungest and the farm is not the biggest!.”Karl runs the business with his son, Werner,A tradition of dependability - the Gabriels with their12 13specialising in grass verge mowing, tree and hedgenew MF 7480 and the long-serving MF 3075.Eskil Carlsson farmswith two tractors, oneof them a brand newMassey Ferguson5455, in the south ofSweden. Together withhis son Magnus hemilks 33 cows andgrows 40 hectares ofsilage and 20 hectaresof cereals.

NEW ORGANISATION INCREASESFOCUS ON CUSTOMER SUPPORTIn a major strategic move, AGCO is creating anew Customer Support operation to bringeven greater after-sales focus to its range ofleading farm machinery brands including MasseyFerguson.Following an intensive programme of newmodel introductions, this new approachintegrates the traditionally separate functions ofParts and Service into a complete CustomerSupport organisation.“This move creates a powerful team tocapitalise on the strong links between these twocrucial after-sales areas and thereby helps ensureeven higher levels of customer satisfaction acrossall products,” says Richard Markwell, newlyappointedvice-president Customer Support forEurope, Africa and Middle East. Richard waspreviously vice-president AGCO Parts Divisionand prior to that held a number of senior salesand marketing positions in the UK and Europe.“The new organisation comes as a logicalprogression of the work between the two groupsover recent years,” he continues. “For example,we have recently introduced our Epsilonelectronic after-sales documentation packagewhich will give dealers on-line access tointegrated parts books and workshop manualsincorporating the very latest machine featuresand design changes. This considerably speeds updelivery of information leading to better servicefor the customer.” Other parts and servicepackages include the manager service and repaircontract for newer machinery, and the 10+ rangeof value-for-money parts for Massey Fergusontractors over ten years-old.“All these initiatives have been developed withclose co-operation between the parts andservice teams,” adds Richard Markwell. “The newCustomer Support organisation will provideopportunities to cement this working relationshipstill further to the overall benefit of our end usersand dealer networks. Underpinned by AGCO’sworldwide investments in customer support, ouraim will be to bring together best practicetechniques from all brands and develop cuttingedgeprogrammes for the future.”Parts for Massey Ferguson machinery aresupplied through a network of five AGCOwarehouses linked by advanced IT systems. Theseautomate the transfer of data and materialbetween facilities to create a ‘virtual warehouse’of more than 700 000 part numbers. In essence, it’s a little like hooking up ahospital patient to an array of medical equipmentnot only can problems be quickly identified and‘cured’, but functions can be also re-programmedto take account of engineering upgrades andmodifications at the touch of a button. If only itwere that simple with humans!Plug-inDepending on specification, electronics controltractor functions like the transmission, linkage, fuelinjection, spool valve management and the MFDatatronic control system. With Wintest, workshop engineers plug in the laptop computerto the tractor’s diagnostic socket located in thecab. This gives them access to a raft of detailedinformation and the facility to detect possiblefaults such as bad connections, solenoid orprinted circuit board failures. When interrogatingthe engine for example, data appears on itemssuch as oil pressure, air intake temperature, coolant temperature, percentage of load on theengine and fuel consumption (including theamount of fuel used over the tractor’s lifetime).Another feature is an on-screen oscilloscopewhich gives a visual indication of the peaks anddetects a fault anywhere in the electronicsnetwork and the technician can then call updetailed wiring diagrams on-screen to target thetroublespot even more accurately.“Using the laptop, you can also adjustparameters such as the tractor’s tickover speed, maximum speed limit, four-wheel drive optionsand so on,” adds Joe Ford.MF dealers download updates to the Wintestsoftware package via AGCO Net - the company’sprivate and secure Extranet facility - which meansthe latest information is always available.“Wintest represents a significant investment forthe company and our dealers,” comments KevinWorrall, Director Product Reliability. “We demandhigh standards of service from our network whichincludes a commitment to investment in toolsand training in order that we can provide thebest possible levels of customer support at thegrassroots.”ever tested.to measure vital signs like blood pressure and heart troughs of engine inputs like oil pressure.14rate in order to identify the illness.
