forewordLetter fromTHE CEOYear 2008 will stay in our minds in more ways thanone. For Ensto, it was a year of our 50th anniversaryand we celebrated this milestone in many different locationswith many guests and colleagues. But 2008 wasalso a year of a sudden economic downturn, which naturallyput a global damper on any celebration, especiallyduring the last quarter. As a company, Ensto is in good shape and ready to facethe challenges – perhaps even take long term advantageof the new situation. Being largely dependent on theconstruction industry is a challenge, which requires newthinking and adjustments. When building and networkdevelopment slow down, renovation picks up, and weaim to leverage the trend by launching renewed productpackages and solutions.Demanding times are nothing new for Ensto, we wereactually established during one. They have always madeus stronger in the end and we expect the credit crunchera to prove the same. Our skilled and motivated personnelare the backbone of our company. We all share theattitude that difficult times demand new ideas and commitmentto find ways to overcome problems togetherwith our customers.Year 2009 began with major news from Ensto. We sold ourshare in Ensto Busch-Jaeger to ABB. The company focuseson wiring accessories and installation materials. The transactionis expected to close in the first quarter of 2009.Approximately 120 persons transferred to ABB as oldemployees. Thanks to the long-term cooperation betweenthe companies, the new arrangement provides an excellentfoundation for further business development.Ensto will continue with Ensto Building Technology, EnstoUtility Networks and Ensto Enclosures and Componentsbusiness units, employing around 1,400 persons in 18countries. Our financial position enables Ensto to developits businesses as well as to invest in new opportunities, especially in the increasingly important field of energyefficiency. All EU member countries have set common targets onreducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and to increase the use of renewable energy sources. And this is a great opportunity.Very simply, the electricindustry can help savethe world. But why is it in akey position to find energyefficient solutions to controlclimate change, and whatkind of energy efficient solutionsdo electric appliancedesign, sales, marketing andproduct specialists have to offer now and in the future? This issue of Ensto Today will provide insight into thesematters.Being a family business we do not have to produce traditionalannual reports. Ensto Today is our main publicationand acts as a source for financial information as well as acustomer magazine, giving you an update on whatEnsto’s year 2008 consisted of and where our future plansare taking us. I hope you will enjoy this issue.‘Jukka KoskinenPresident and CEO, Ensto GroupAs a company,Ensto is in goodshape and readyto face the challenges.’2009 ENSTO TODAY | 3

greener homesBY DEGREESStory PASI LEINO AND MARK WOODSIn today’s world, energyefficiency begins athome. Intelligentbuilding and electricheating solutionscombined with simpleactions taken in homesand offices could deliversubstantial energysavings and counterglobal warming into thebargain. With ever-shrinking resources and a growingdemand for them, the time has come torevise old ways of thinking and come upwith fresh solutions for building and heating.Domestic energy use accounts for as muchas 40% of all energy usage leading experts toagree that energy efficiency at home and inthe office is a fast and achievable routetowards positive change.Green electricityIncreasingly consumers are able to choose"green" energy coming from low emission oremissionless electricity sources such as fromwind turbines and photovoltaic power stations.Choosing green energy is an importantstep forward for everyone but whileenergy companies develop these newsources to rival traditional ones, daily energyefficiency really does begin at home.Everybody can and should make a differencenow by applying some simple and effectiverules and investing in the right technologies.Ensto – greener by degreesEnsto provides solutions for the home andoffice that are driven by the ethos of energyefficiency. Ensto’s philosophy can besummed up as low energy technology andproducts that are both easy-to-use andinstall in order to have a real impact in dailylife. All of these products will be identifiableby the Ensto symbol ‘Greener by degrees’ –an assurance to home owners that theirchoices are right for both the home and thegreater environment. From Ensto’s perspective, electricity is anintegral part of the energy efficient homeand electric heating is the key driver forkeeping the living space warm as it can reactquickly and in a controlled way. Every housealready has electricity, so why spend themoney and energy on building up an extraheating system?Economical, convenient,long-lastingEnsto offers a variety of economical, convenientand long-lasting systems for buildersand existing homeowners, from floor heatingsolutions, panel heaters and other solutionsto fit the requirements of the livingspace. As well as being comfortable, quietand easy to install, electric heating is themost economical way to heat, when annualusage and service expenses have been factoredin. It’s also good to remember thatwith electric heating almost 100% of theenergy used is transformed into heat and6 | ENSTO TODAY 2009

energy efficiencythe systems that regulate and create it reactquickly to change.Flexible heating using electricity is also a keyfactor in a household’s economy; just beingable to drop the home temperature by onedegree means a five per cent saving in heatingbills. Indeed, with systems as fast, efficientand flexible as those offered by Ensto, homeowners can now move up from simplyheating towards the idea of "managing theirinternal climate".Ensto products that equal simpleenergy savingInternal climate management becomes anachievable goal with the installation of intelligenthome control. Ensto’s ECO600 controlcentre, for example, is a user-friendly andaffordable tool to ensure energy efficiencyand comfort. It enables fast and accuratecontrol over room temperature and alarmsystems and can even be remotely operatedfrom a mobile phone. Some of its advantagesare that it is simple to install and does notrequire complex maintenance.Using Ensto’s range of advanced ECOthermostats,home-owners are able to discretelycontrol the temperature in differentrooms within their electrically heated house.Energy consumption is reduced as roomtemperature can be dropped when beingabsent and again returned to normal levelbefore returning to the property.Ensto also offers motion sensitive PIR (passiveinfra red) lighting for less frequentlyoccupied areas of the house. These ensurethat lighting only goes on when people arein the space and turn off automatically whenthey leave thus representing both convenienceand energy saving.Simple steps towards saving energyBuilding and electrical solutions aside, it’sgood also to remember those simple actionsthat mean energy saving now – e.g. by usingPIR lighting represents a saving ofas much as 80 percent in lightingenergy consumption. And thenof course, remembering to turnall appliances off from standbywhen not in use and using chargersonly when needed.A small investment in robust,well-proven Ensto technologyand a conscious approach toenergy usage add up to clearadvantages. Making informed‘lifestyle choices means that ordinary consumerscan save energy and money andgain peace of mind that they are doing theirpart to help the environment. As well as beingcomfortable, quiet andeasy to install, electricheating is the mosteconomical way to heat.’2009 ENSTO TODAY | 7

‘With Ensto's solutionsyou may combine safeand comfortable livingwith energy efficiency.’Time for an internalCLIMATE CHANGE— Family Lalu builds an energyefficient homeEnergy efficiency hasbecome an importantissue for every homebuilderand family Laluis no exception.Story Leena Manner and Veronica StjernvallBuilding a house is a huge investment for thefuture. The main objective for Pia and TeroLalu was to build a house that is familyfriendlyand comfortable, but also to makesure the house is cost-efficient. They decidedto focus on energy efficiency and to build ahouse with a class A energy certificate. The building phase – so manychoices! There are three major factors that affect energyefficiency in building: Air tightness of thebuilding, proper insulation and controlledventilation. The outer walls with the foundationand the top form the building sheath. Itis important to emphasize energy efficiencyalready during the building phase since thesheath is difficult to improve later on.When looking at house designs Pia and TeroLalu opted for a simple design. The house isdivided into two floors giving the family offive plenty of space, a total of 165 squaremeters. The room height is 2,8 meters, keepingthe cubic volume reasonable. The househas a normal average number of windows, but no large ceiling-high windows.Excellent insulation and a heat recovery systemthat recovers up to 80 percent of theroom temperature are the keys to energyefficient living for the family Lalu. When theinsulation is intact, the energy required forheating is minimal. When the family of five isliving normally, household appliances andequipment and lighting already take care ofmuch of the heating.According to the energy certificate calculationsmade for the Lalu house the price forheating is a little less than 2000 euros/year.This is 600 euros less than the average heatingcost per year for a Finnish house. The savingsper year are quite remarkable and thefamily Lalu is pleased with their new houseand its energy efficient solutions.8 | ENSTO TODAY 2009

energy efficiencyThe heating solution– We opted for an easy, safe and cheap heatingsolution. The aim is to utilize heatingenergy efficiently and to make best use ofelectricity without compromising on comfort, says Pia Lalu.– We want a home that is easy to live in andreliable. We want to be able to control themost important functions, such as heating. When we are absent for longer periods, wecan reduce house heating, but still comeback to comfortable warmth.usage and increase convenience at the sametime. Energy efficient heating is achievedbest with new heaters that are equippedwith electronic thermostats. We can improvethe energy efficiency of our lighting by usingswitches and dimmers.Electrical floor heating is installed on everyfloor in the house. Air heat pumps both upanddownstairs, and a big storing fireplacedownstairs complement it. The chosen flooringmaterial is parquet that abandons heatslowly, and in wet areas the selected materialis tile. For the heating Ensto Tassu S-floorheating cables were chosen. The floor heatingis not storing, except in the garage.Stored heating reacts much slower to temperaturechanges and also releases it muchslower. The Lalu family wanted to make bestuse of their electrical heating and air heatpump combination that is fast and accuratein its response to temperature changes.According to Motiva, a company offeringexpert services to promote energy efficiency, the most cost-efficient way of heating ahouse with intact insulation is electricalheating.dolore.Why Ensto? With Ensto’s solutions you may combine safeand comfortable living with energy efficiency.By controlling heat and lighting you onlyuse them when needed.– We feel comfortable and safe at home, when the heating and lighting work flexiblyas desired. With a home control centre wecan reduce heating and lighting energyAll Ensto solutions for heating and lightingcontrol are easy to use.FACTIn Finland, a country with a notedreputation for long cold winters, 1.5million homes have chosen electricityas the heating method, which accountsfor about 20% of the total buildingvolume and 40% of the number ofbuildings.2009 ENSTO TODAY | 9

EnstoINVESTSStory Maija EklöfThe new heater line produces panel heaters withan annual capacity of 140.000, over 600 heatersper day.The new heater line was officially opened on 24 September, 2008 in the Porvoo factory. The ceremoniesculminated when the heater line was switched on as a joint effort by Jukka Koskinen, President and CEOof Ensto Group, Jukka Karhu, Director, Operations in Ensto Building Technology business unit, Jukka-Pekka Ujula, Deputy Mayor of Porvoo, Matti Rae, Technology Manager, Ensto Building Technology, HannuKeinänen, President, Ensto Building Technology, and Esko Valtaoja, Professor in astronomy.A new heater linefor future needsDuring the last years, the sales of electricalsupplies and control systems have beenincreasing continuously due to emphasison building and energy saving in Finlandand nearby countries, especially Russia andthe CIS countries. In order to respond togrowing market demand, Ensto has madean investment of 2.5 M€ on a new heaterline. The line started to operate in Ensto’sPorvoo factory in April 2008 and it is producingpanel heaters with an annualcapacity of 140.000, over 600 heaters perday.Heating solutions with low initial investmentcost, such as panel heating, providea beneficial choice both cost-wise andfrom the point of view of the environment.Ensto’s panel heaters are easy-to-use andinstall and they create an easy-to-modifysystem to control indoor climate. Ensto’spanel heaters have been installed innumerous apartment and public buildings, where these requirements must be takeninto account.– This has been a long-term investment, which is expected to pay itself back in thefuture. Even though the market situationhas become more difficult this year, thereis still huge potential in Russia and otherCIS markets building sector, where we canpromote our innovative solutions andenergy efficiency, says Jukka Koskinen,President and CEO of Ensto Group.Monster – a trulyversatile giantAnother major investment made in 2008was a mammoth-size machine worth amillion euros and nicknamed “Monster”because of its huge size. The machine12 | ENSTO TODAY 2009

investmentsTwo huge trucks were needed to transport the“Monster” machine from Italy to Porvoo, Finland, and it took the whole day to lift and move themachine parts inside the factory.weights about 20 tons and needs about 45square meters of floor space in the factory. It was purchased from Italy in March 2007and transferred to Porvoo in May 2008.The Monster is used in the production ofmetal components for utility networkaccessories. These components includemedium and low voltage connector bodiesand tightening screws for undergroundcable networks. The Monster is a truly versatilegiant, easily able to beat old productionrecord times. Before, it took one minuteto make a component in four phaseswith four different machines and now, theMonster does the same in less than tenseconds. The machine is best suited forproducing large quantities. The machine is controlled by one manwho operates other machines simultaneously. It uses pure vegetable cutting oiland 100 % of the scrap it generates isrecycled. - Our aim is to take nature intoconsideration as well as possible in all ouroperations. Although huge in size andscrap quantity, the Monster is no exceptionhere," concludes Jarkko Männistö,Technical Manager in Ensto UtilityNetworks business unit.New cold shrinkbusiness technologyfrom ItalyEnsto’s experience and know-how in coldshrink technology was strengthened bythe acquisition of the Italian Tegis’ technologyin June 2008. Tegis is specialised in thedevelopment and manufacturing of coldshrink technology products for utility networkconstruction materials. It completesEnsto's offering in medium voltage undergroundcable accessories where it has hadproducts based on heat shrink technology.Cold shrink technology is emerging inmedium voltage joints and terminationsdue to its easy and fast installation. Theacquisition was a strategic step for Ensto incomplementing their product portfolio ofutility network underground cable accessoriesand to provide even better serviceto customers.2009 ENSTO TODAY | 13

logisticsLogistics CentreRIGHT CODE, RIGHT TIMERIGHT PLACEBarcodes revolutionise Ensto warehousing practicesand improve productivityStory MARK WOODSFor a company which operatesin 18 countries and sells to over80, Ensto identified the need foran all encompassing logisticssolution for the huge amount ofmaterial it warehouses andships out on a daily basis. In itsmain Porvoo Logistics Centre, this has become a reality withthe institution of a comprehensivebarcode system.Kai RaittilaLogistics Manager at EnstoEnsto Logistics Centre in Porvoo, Finland isa busy place. Within its 7000 square metresof floor space there are 10,000 storage placesfor all the material stored there. The constantthroughput at the warehouse requiresthe attention of nearly 25 warehouseemployees operating over two shifts – servingEnsto’s clients in construction, manufacturingand electrical distribution really is afull time job. On a typical day, personnelhandle anything between 600 to 1,200 palletsor 400 to 800 delivery rows and therecan be little room for error.Sales labels for Ensto’s products are in therange of 6,500 of which approximately3,000 are found in the Porvoo LogisticsCentre. Every product in the warehouse hasits own individual picking place abovewhich there are reserves. As little as twoand a half years ago these used to be cardindexed – an identifiably outdated practicethat had to go.Out with the oldand in with the newIn 2007, Ensto took the decision to replacethe antiquated card system with a comprehensivebarcode system linking it into theirexisting Enterprise Resource Planning system, which was instituted to Ensto in 2005.The aims were clear: to remove typicalerrors in collecting material, to improvewarehouse productivity and unify the operatingsystem to enable all to use it. With allthe pieces in place, forklift trucks makingpick ups and deliveries would be able tofeed data directly into the ERP system fromonboard computers and finally get rid ofthe card system for good. The project was planned to take place overfour phases. The first phase was to give acode to each product and accurately inventorytheir volumes. The second phase wasto code each warehouse place and createclear lines and order inside the warehouseto ensure efficient operations. The thirdphase involved the unification of routinesin the receiving of goods, shelving and thehandling of goods on their way out. Thefinal phase is to track goods on their journeyto the customer and to eliminate theproblem of sending wrong shipments out.At the start of the project in 2006, 16 forklifttrucks computer terminals were installedand all 10 000 shelf spaces were markedwith bar codes. Wisely, this work was outsourcedto a four-man team to ensure staffworking on-site were not disrupted in theirdaily routines. In the next year, two forklifttrucks were supplied with printers, whichallowed them to place printed customerrowsand basic messages on a shipment.Example: the customer is able to send their14 | ENSTO TODAY 2009

logisticsown reference ("mark") that is automaticallyprinted out at the trucks as stickers andglued on the shipment. This helps the receptionof the shipment.Paper goes electronicWith the institution of computers, selectionlists for picking were naturally transferredfrom paper to electronic form. This createdproblems of its own for those used to the oldsystem. Adapting to the on screen operatingsystem, understanding its logic and learningit as a whole posed quite a learning curve. With a diverse range of ages and educationalbackgrounds, some workers had to startfrom the very basics of computer learning.– Some of our employees have been workingfor Ensto for quite a long time and somewere even afraid to push computer buttonswhen this project began, Logistics Managerat Ensto, Kai Raittila explained.Having identified this as a major problem, much work has been done to train all thewarehouse personnel to become familiarwith working with computers and with thesystem as a whole. The work has, however, paid off with greatly improved pickingaccuracy.Increased accuracyRaittila explained that prior to the new barcodesystem, picking errors were approximately1.5% – an unacceptably high figure,in his opinion. Apart from being disruptiveto business, errors in shipments could alsoprove costly. In one instance sending awrong shipment to the Far East meant thatthe cost of retrieval was so great that theonly option was to leave it there. Before thechangeover to the barcode system, thecommon logic was to identify the operatorwho had made the mistake and get them tocorrect it personally. While this was a goodpolicy, the present system has meant a dropin errors to 0.2%, a figure which Raittilaexplains is in keeping with best warehousingpractices.Looking back over the project, Raittila whotook the role of ‘driver’ explains that despitea good outcome, there were many challengesto overcome. Staying on scheduleand matching the schedules of the five differentorganisation members involved wasdifficult. Adapting the ERP system took doublethe time anticipated and all documentationalso needed to be kept up to speedwhen changes were made to the system.Raittila says there will still be an increase intraining of existing personnel and animprovement in induction for new staff butis assured that the project has been worthwhile. With all products itemised and listedin the barcode system, it is now possible forthe first time to do a full stocktake in a fractionof the time using barcode scanners.Operations in Ensto’s Estonian warehousingoperation have now also been brought inline with the Porvoo Logistics Centre. Now that our internal handling in the warehouseis at a great level, we will focus ondeliveries and transportation. What happensafter our picking is ready and the customergets our invoice. Some customers and theFinnish customs are eagerly waiting that wecan send delivery information electronically. We are also looking forward to sending ourtransportation orders electronically to transportationcompanies soon, says Kai Raittila. With everything now in place, it’s time toreap the rewards of two and a half years ofhard work and look to the future of thelogistics with confidence.16 | ENSTO TODAY 2009

logisticsElectronic invoicing saves time, moneyand the environmentEnsto’s companies in Finland and Estoniaare now able to send e-invoices to thosecustomers who wish to have them.Receiving an e-invoice requires that thecustomer’s systems are able to receiveelectronic invoices. The time needed to send and handle theinvoice is less because the invoice arrivesin real-time and doesn’t need to be insertedseparately in the receiving system. Also, it enables the receiver to handleinvoices automatically, naturally dependingon the customer’s system. This freesimportant resurces for other tasks.E-invoicing is environmentally friendlyandecological because electronic sendingdecreases carbon dioxide emissions, there is no need to print invoices onpaper and there’s no need for envelopesor mailing. This also saves fuel.An e-invoice can also be used as marketingmedia, to carry information on newproducts, for example. To find out more about e-invoice possibilitieswith Ensto, please contact JensBergman at Ensto:jens.bergman@ensto.comItella Information Oyj acts as Ensto’soperator.2009 ENSTO TODAY | 17

electric carsELECTRICcharging the car industryCARSare hereConcern for the environmentis making peoplebuy better and cleanercars.Story MINNA NEUVONENAfter 120 years of living with automobiles, the vastly expanded global road traffic is nowentering an era of different technology concepts.Four years ago, hydrogen was all thehype, then it was ethanol, and now we havethe electric car. Compared the previous technologieswe are on the right track – an environmentallyfriendly car that both the manufacturersand the general public believe in.So far.The demand for higher efficiency and loweremissions drive electric car development. Thanks to the hybrid concept, electric vehiclesare developing progressively combiningthe combustion engine with electric technology. As always, there is the promise of newand better technologies – like advancedenergy storage systems – but we must get afeasible solution on the road now. Along withthe architecture and solutions to feed theenergy demands of the new transport technologyin mainstream, on an everyday basis. The Japanese, German and American carmanufacturers are all developing their ownversions of electric cars. Many institutions, colleges and businesses are joining the race.In Italy, the postal services have thousands ofelectric cars in daily use already. Californiagovernor Arnold Schwarzenegger hasannounced plans to introduce a car hire systemof a fleet of battery-powered vehicles.Ensto – charging ahead towards aEuropean electric car infrastructureEnsto is aiming at a European-wide businessbased on both slow and fast charging systemsfor electric vehicles. Matti Rae,Technology Manager at Ensto, is leading thedrive into the new field that is opening ahuge potential for Ensto.Ensto’s founder Ensio Miettinen takes a specialinterest in the issue, and has workedtogether with Matti Rae at the early stages ofEnsto’s EV charging project. The first questionsthey asked were: How should electricvehicles be charged? What type of chargingwill be needed? Do we need fast chargingstations and, if so, who will provide them andwhere? How will people use EV’s in their dailylives? One of the conclusions was that theelectrical network will need to adapt andprovide the solution – the charging infrastructuremust be planned and executed in avery practical and down-to-earth way.24 | ENSTO TODAY 2009

It must be easy: a small step fromfill-it-up to plug-it-inDifferent concepts for charging locationsand solutions are being developed, withpossible new partners as service providers.Service/gas stations, shopping centers, cardealers, car service companies and parkinglot owners – are among the obvious ones.increasing demand for greener vehicles.Innovative newcomers to the industry, likeTesla Motors of Silicon Valley, may be in agood position to jump-start the EV development.Time will tell if the credit crunch erawill actually work in favor of a large-scale EVmarket. New regulations, especially in theUS, favor low- or no-emission cars, speedingup the demand for EV’s.At the end of 2008, the first electric carcharging distribution board in Finlandwas supplied by Ensto to FortumCorporation, the leading power andheating company in the Nordiccountries.Ensto aims to become a major player incharging solutions and is ready to discussand innovate with customers – to seek newsolutions for electrical vehicle chargingopportunities. So – will electric cars be practical? How longwill it take until we have a charging infrastructurein place? We don’t know all theanswers yet. Judging by the enthusiasmboth the automobile industry as well as forward-lookingsuppliers like Ensto are showingto solve the remaining challenges, itlooks like EV is where the future of the car isheading. First GreenLight endorser in Poland with Ensto PIR –RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY IN WARSAWcaseDuring the renovation of alarge residential buildingin Warsaw the lighting systemsof staircases and corridorswere modernized as partof energy-saving activities.Ensto PIR, a sensor-controlledlighting system was chosen. The 13-storey block of flats was equippedwith a traditional lighting system. The automaticstaircase lighting system run byswitch buttons placed in several points oneach floor turned on the light in the wholebuilding and turned it off after 3 minutes.Luminaries in garages, cellars etc. (whereseparate switch buttons were) remained in“on” position until switched off separately.Ensto PIR luminaries do not require replacingthe fluorescent lamps often (2 yearsguarantee). In the above case all the switchbuttons were eliminated. There were 79 incandescent luminaries (40W) and the total power amounted to 3,16kW in the building. The estimated averagetime of lighting – 9h per day - resulted inannual energy consumption of 10238 kWh.The cost amounted to 855 euros per year. All the maintenance costs for example forthe replacement of burnt bulbs added.GreenLight is a voluntary program whichencourages non-residential electricityconsumers to install energy-efficientlighting technologies in their facilities. The main target of the program is toreduce the indoor and outdoor lightingenergy consumption throughout Europe, thus reducing polluting emissions andlimiting the global warming. TheGreenLight program was launched inFebruary 2000.After the analysis of power and intensity ofillumination, the Ensto PIR system wasinstalled. The number of luminariesdecreased to 66 (18W) with total power of1,2 kW and an estimated time of the dailyconsumption of the light up to 2 h per day(as the light was “on” only in case of movement). The annual energy consumptiondecreased to 855 kWh and approximateenergy costs to 73 euros annually. It wasestimated that the implementation ofEnsto PIR luminaries resulted in 90 %savings on energy consumption andmaintenance per year. With the help of the PIR calculator, you caneasily find out how much you could save bychanging your button-controlled lighting toEnsto PIR luminaires. Bird and squirrel protectorsHELP ANIMALS WHILE SECURINGPOWER SUPPLYStory Henna VirtanenAnimal protectors come inmany shapes and sizesand they offer versatilebenefits - the protectors notonly protect small animalsand birds but also help secureuninterrupted electricitydistribution for of all us.Every year squirrels, birds and other wildlifecause numerous power failures by wanderinginto transformers and power lines.According to BirdLife thousands of birds dieevery year because of power lines. Largebirds such as eagles and swans are at risknearby the power lines due to their largewingspan.Yet squirrels cause most of the problems inelectricity distribution by leaping betweenbranches and ending up between transformerterminals. As a result squirrels getelectrocuted, which can cause a power failurethat lasts up to several hours as well asproblems for both consumers and powerdistribution companies. Not to mention theterrible fate of the squirrel. At Ensto, this problem has been tackled duringthe last decade with the production andimplementation of a greater range of birdand squirrel protectors in pole transformersand bare wires.Eagle protection fixtureEnsto works continuously in cooperationwith its customers to develop more animalfriendly electricity distribution networks. Agood example is Ensto’s new Eagle protectionfixture, which protects eagles and otherlarge birds from electric shocks. Eagles oftenuse overhead line crossarms as their observationpoints, and if their wings touch thephase conductors they will perish. With thenew Eagle protection fixture, the bird sits at asafe distance from the live parts and avoidselectric shocks.Ensto has taken the environment into considerationalso in the manufacture of theproduct. The fixture is made of recycledplastic, has a long lifecycle and fits well to itssurroundings.Line markersLine markers are balls that have two halvesattached by using a connector. They aremade of durable plastic, and are easy toinstall since cutting the power is notrequired. This is because the ball can betightened in place using an insulated installationrod. Line markers are used to protectbirds from flying into power lines and gettingkilled, but the markers also prevent linesfrom touching in high winds, without stressingthem. Environmental experts and ornithologistsare consulted on bird movementsin areas where new power lines will be constructed, and whether line markers shouldbe used.28 | ENSTO TODAY 2009

caseSafeguardingbirds in NorthernBohemiaStory Sona Hendrychova, CEZ GroupIn the Northern Bohemia region of the CzechRepublic, power engineers have been dealingwith questions regarding the protection ofbirds since 1995. “The aim is to prevent birdsfrom having electrical accidents or perishingwhile landing on power lines or while takingoff,” says Jiři Koutecky, Safety Director of ČEZDistribution. Together with environmentalists, the ČEZ Group pursues the fulfillment of anagreement that specifies the area as a protectionarea for birds from electrical accidents. To protect birds from touching energizedconductors at pole tops while sitting there, thousands of Ensto bird protectors wereinstalled. The installation of protectors wasmade “live-line”, the method which allowscontinuing of distribution of electricity withoutinterruptions to electricity supply to consumers. The project continues in the area andthe costs are estimated to be around 54 000Euros.Ensto’s PAS forest corridors system leaves morespace for the natural environment and allowsreduced tree felling as it requires approximately 40% less space than regular bare wires. Trees can beleft growing along roadsides, providing effectivescreening.Protective measures of the ČEZ Group gobeyond legal obligations. In accordance withthe current agreement with the environmentalists, they want to provide 3.5 MEUR duringthe years 2008 - 2013 for the protection ofbirds.2009 ENSTO TODAY | 29
