It is called <strong>the</strong>Witnessed Day. It is <strong>the</strong> Day bywhich Allah swears. Allah said: “Andby <strong>the</strong> Promised Day and by thatwitnesses and <strong>the</strong> Witnessed Day.”Abu Hurairah reported that <strong>the</strong>Witness is Friday and <strong>the</strong> Witnessedis <strong>the</strong> Day of ‘Arafat and <strong>the</strong>Promised is <strong>the</strong> Day of Judgment.Due to <strong>the</strong> great graces that Allahbestows abundantly on Muslims onit, <strong>the</strong> Day of ‘Arafat has beengranted <strong>the</strong> title “The WitnessedDay”. A Jewish man said to ‘UmarIbn Al-Khattab: “O Commander of <strong>the</strong>believers! A verse in your Book. Had itbeen revealed to us we would havetaken <strong>the</strong> day on which it wasrevealed a festival.Allah said:“This dayhave I perfected your religion for you,completed My favour upon you, andhave chosen for you Islam as yourreligion.” ‘Umar said: “I know <strong>the</strong> dayon which it was revealed and <strong>the</strong> placein which it was revealed. It wasrevealed while <strong>the</strong> prophet – peace beupon him - was stopping in ‘Arafat onFriday.” 15 It is a Muslim festival. Theprophet – peace be upon him- said:“The Day of ‘Arafat and <strong>the</strong> Day ofSlaughtering and <strong>the</strong> Days ofTashriqare festivals for Muslims.” 16On <strong>the</strong> Day of ‘Arafat Allah saves agreat number of people from hell.‘Aisha –may Allah be pleased withher- reported that <strong>the</strong> prophet –peace be upon him- said: “On <strong>the</strong>Day of ‘Arafah Allah saves from hell anumber of people greater than anumber that He saves on any o<strong>the</strong>rday.” 17Islam urges Muslims to fast for <strong>the</strong>Day of ‘Arafat and promises a greatreward <strong>the</strong>refore. When <strong>the</strong>prophet – peace be upon him- wasasked about fasting <strong>the</strong> Day of‘Arafat, he said: “It wipes off <strong>the</strong> sinsof <strong>the</strong> past year and <strong>the</strong> comingyear.” 18 However, it is forbidden for<strong>the</strong> pilgrims to fast on that day.Notes1Prayer2Alms giving3The ninth month of <strong>the</strong> Muslim calendar4Bukhari and Muslim.
