The sections covered are:• Section A:The Search for Meaning• Section B: Christianity• Section C: Morality• Section D: Celebrating Faith• Section E: God-Talk• Section F: A Living Faith – Doing Justice• Section G: StoryOur Lady’s Grove offer Religious Education as a Leaving Certificate examination subject. The sections covered are:Year 1 Year 2Section A: Search for Meaning and Values CourseworkSection B: Christianity: origins & contemporary Section D: Moral Decision - MakingexpressionsOrOrSection C: World ReligionsSection C: World ReligionsCoursework Any one section from Unit 3Coursework is given based on two titles, Section E: Religion and Genderprescribed by <strong>the</strong> SEC, based on two sections Section F: <strong>Issue</strong>s of Peace and Justicefrom Unit 3 of <strong>the</strong> syllabus.Section G: Worship, Prayer and RitualThese two sections will not be examined in Section H: The Bible: Literature and Sacred Text<strong>the</strong> terminal exam for that year.Section I: Religion:The Irish ExperienceSection J: Religion and ScienceIn deciding <strong>the</strong> titles for <strong>the</strong> coursework, students are introduced to all four titles prescribed. They are <strong>the</strong>n givena two-week input on each of <strong>the</strong> titles and <strong>the</strong>n students are invited to pick <strong>the</strong> title that is of most interest to <strong>the</strong>m.Students are invited to meet <strong>the</strong> teacher on a one-to-one basis if <strong>the</strong>y need fur<strong>the</strong>r help to choose a title or supportwhile <strong>the</strong> project is in progress.The reason we chose to offer RE as a Leaving Certificate examination subject was to allow students who areinterested in Religious Education and Philosophy to explore <strong>the</strong>se areas and develop skills for life such as ‘inquiry,critical thinking, problem solving, self-reliance, initiative and enterprise’ (Leaving Certificate Syllabus, p. 4). Also, weare able to offer Religious Education as an eighth subject, giving students every chance to achieve optimum resultsin <strong>the</strong> Leaving Certificate. Religious Education as an examination subject has been a very different experience forour students. A fifth year student describes <strong>the</strong> experience of fifth year. ‘I chose RE as an exam subject because ITEACHING RELIGIOUS EDUCATION ISSUE FOUR SEPTEMBER 2009 43
