Dock worker access while on board Schedule 214.2 Vertical ladders14.2.1 The following requirements apply to a vertical ladder:(a) the inclination of the ladder to the horizontal must exceed 65° except that,in way of sloping ends of holds in a bulk carrier, the ladder may be at alesser angle to the horizontal for a length of ladder not exceeding 6 m;(b) the rungs must be spaced at equal intervals of not more than 350 mm andnot less than 250 mm and provide a foothold for a width of not less than300 mm;(c) the rungs of the ladder must be formed from solid metal bars having:(i) a circular cross section, or(ii) a square cross section with one diagonal vertical;(d) the rungs must be as follows:(i) bars of a circular cross section having a minimum diameter of 25 mm;or(ii) bars of a square cross section having sides of a minimum of 22 mm;(e) the ladder must provide a secure handhold;(f) the side rails of the ladder must be in a vertical plane.14.2.2 On vessels built after 1 August 1998, the maximum vertical length betweenplatforms of a vertical ladder outside a cargo space (for example in a cranepedestal) is 6 m.14.3 Inclined ladders14.3.1 The following requirements apply to an inclined ladder:(a) the ladder must be inclined at an angle to the horizontal not greaterthan 65°;(b) the steps of the ladder must be spaced at equal intervals of not more than350 mm and not less than 250 mm and provide a foothold for a width of notless than 450 mm;(c) the steps of the ladder must be formed from chequered steel plate, with theleading edge rounded, or a satisfactory equivalent or from solid metal barshaving:(i) a circular cross section; or(ii) a square cross section with one diagonal vertical;(d) the steps must be as follows:(i) steel plate or the like having a bearing surface of not less than 115 mmin depth; or(ii) bars of a circular cross section having a minimum diameter of 25 mm;or(iii) bars of a square cross section having sides of a minimum of 22 mm;(e) the steps, if constructed of metal bars, must consist of 2 or more parallelbars arranged on the same horizontal plane, with the distance between thecentres of adjacent bars being not less than 65 mm and not more than75 mm;<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Order</strong> <strong>32</strong> (<strong>Cargo</strong> <strong>handling</strong> <strong>equipment</strong>) 2011 35MO<strong>32</strong> modcomp-130604Z.docx
