These symptomscontinued all night ; slept none ; the pulse now is quick<strong>and</strong> irritable ;skin warm, <strong>and</strong> bedewed with gentle perspirationon the head <strong>and</strong> shoulders ; respiration somewhat impeded ;tongue coated white ; complains of permanent pain in thelower dorsal region ;- by his side is a pan containing a largequantity of a thin, white, frothy fluid—an excessive flow ofsaliva, which had commenced soon after the exacerbation hadmade its incursion. Ordered : Cal <strong>and</strong> Rhei. aa 15 grs. ; sinapismto the spine ; 8 grs, Ext. Cor. at 8, A. M. 29th, repeatedevery hour until 48 gi^s. are taken.2, P. M., 29th. Has taken the Ext. Cor. as directed, but notthe Cal, &c. At 3, P. M., yesterday, exacerbation returned,but its severity was very much mitigated ;great relief was obtainedfrom sinapism to the spine ;pulse weak <strong>and</strong> irritableskin moderately cool—very nearly natural in temperaturetongue coated, with a disagreeable taste in the mouth ;tendernesson pressure at the epigastrium, extending down the abdomen; constant <strong>and</strong> copious eructation of frothy fluid. Ext.Cor. 8 grs. every hour till 4^0 grs. are taken.11, A. M., 30th. Has no fever; no exacerbation since lastvisit ;prescription partially attended to—has taken but 28 grs.Ext. Cor. ; bowels much constipated. Calomel <strong>and</strong> Rhubarbaa 15 grs., to be taken instanter.4, P. M. Sent for in haste to see him : found him in a comatosecondition, which had supervened soon after my departurethis morning; can articulate indistinctly; from 12 to 2 o'clockwas speechless, nor could he be aroused by the loudest callsskin is now universally coo' ;pulse slow <strong>and</strong> feeble ; shrinks<strong>and</strong> groans upon the slightest pressure over the epigastric <strong>and</strong>umbilical regions ; complains of exquisite pain in the stomach<strong>and</strong> bowels. At 111 this morning, he took the Cal., &c., becamesuddenly sick at the stomach, vomited freely, then sunkinto his present state. It is proper to remark, that at the timeof taking this powder, he had not had an operation in threedays—owing to neglect on the part of the attendants; sincetaking it, he has had two stools. Prescribed: hot mustardpediluvium; blister-plaster over the epigastric <strong>and</strong> umbilical

Continues to improve ; no fever.This patient continued to improve steadily without furthermedication.Case II. A. M., white woman, set. 36, residence near thecemetery, of delicate habit, constitution impaired.Three weekssince, had three paroxysms of quotidian intermittent fever, forwhich she had been treated by thereporter with quinine, &c.On the arrest of the fever, menstruation commenced <strong>and</strong> lastedthree days ; a week intervened with comparatively good health,when the menses returned more copious than ordinary for fivedays. During all this time, she says she has had fever, moreor less marked, every day, owing doubtless to her menstrual derangement.This brings us to the history of the disease underconsideration.On the 14th Sept., the day on which the menses disappeared,had a slight chill about 8, P. M. ; represents herself as havingslept none that night.1 5th. A chill at 12, M. 7, P. M., first visit—this is herstate : skin preternaturally warm <strong>and</strong> dry ;pulse feeble, frequent<strong>and</strong> irritable ; tongue parched <strong>and</strong> coated brown ;painin the back, <strong>and</strong> extremities, particularly in the lumbar <strong>and</strong>upper dorsal regions ; eyes icterode ; bowels torpid, having hadbut one evacuation in a week ;epigastric region. Prescription : Calomelsinapism to the spine ;8 grs. Ext. Cor. at 12, M., I6th, repeatedevery hour till 60 grs. are taken.vomiting <strong>and</strong> tenderness in the<strong>and</strong> Jalap, aa 1 5 grs.16th, 4, P. M. 32 grs. Ext. taken ; Calomel <strong>and</strong> Jalap, <strong>and</strong>sinapism, attended to as directed ; has had two stools ; feelsmuch better ;pulse soft <strong>and</strong> somewhat excited. Since the firstdose of the Ext., the surface has been universally covered withperspiration—the only physical effect of the medicine; pain<strong>and</strong> weakness in the back relieved by sinapism ;vomited freelylast night—describes the matter vomited to be largely mixedwith bile ; head-ache <strong>and</strong> tenderness in the right hypochondriummost prominent symptoms. Prescription continued a«directed.
