Philadelphia: Printed for the Association,by T. K. & P. G. Collins. 1848. pp.403. 8vo.We proceed to redeem our promise of giving a notice of thefirst volume of the Transactions of the American MedicalAssociation. From the several lengthy accounts already publishedby us respecting the proceedings of this body, little elseremains for us to do than simply to extract what we deem usefuland interesting to those readers who are unable to obtain therecord of their transactions. All we propose then, to do now, isto pass over the pages of this volume and transfer to our Journalthe important professional facts it contains. The meetingin Baltimore was composed as follows—4 from the U. S. Navy,9 New Hampshire, 4 Vermont, 19 Massachusetts, 4 RhodeIsland,15 Connecticut, 45 New- York, 8 New Jersey, 51 Pennsylvania,5 Delaware, 68 Maryland, 10 District of Columbia, 14Virginia, 3 South Carolina, 2 Georgia, 1 Louisiana, 1 Missouri,f Kentucky, 3 Tennessee, 3 Illinois, 3 Indiana, 1 Wisconsin.Texas, North Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Maine, Florida,Arkansas, Iowa and Michigan, nme States, were not represented.Total number of delegates present, 266.As an Appendix to the proceedings of the sessions held inBaltimore, are the reports of the various committees appointed atthe previous meeting which was held at Philadelphia. The firstis on medical science, and prepared by Dr. W. T. Wragg, ofCharleston, S. C, who acted as Chairman, in the absence of Dr.S. H. Dickson. It occupies 50 pages. This is certainly amost able article, and does great credit to our young professionalfriend. We take the following extracts from it :" On the Causes and Treatment of Scurvy the Journals furnishus much valuable matter. Dr. Shapter and Dr. Lonsdale* considerthe absence of the potatoe* as the ''fons et origo^mali.''^They adduce much proof from their own experience, and thatof others, in confirmation of their views. As a general rule,Prov. Med. and Surg. Jour., and Med. Times, 1847; Edin. Mon. Journ,,1847.
