1849.] O'KeefFe, on the Properties of Dogwood Bark. 19system to these periodic invasions, the inferences rationally deduciblefrom the general properties of the Ext. of Dogwoodbark are—that with antiperiodic, it combines tonic virtues,therefore its effects on the system are more permanent thanthose of quinine, to which modern observation will not ascribethese properties in so high a degree ;that by imparting tone tothe system, it secures a more favourable <strong>and</strong> fortified conditionof the organs for resisting the subsequent encroachments of themorbific agent ;<strong>and</strong> consequently, may not this latter qualificationgive it an important advantage over quinine, inasmuch asit is calculated to accomplish /?er se, w'hat would require quinine,"with a course of tonic treatment?A few cases could be adduced in support of the positionhere suggested, Which Will be adverted to en passant; but tosubstantiate <strong>and</strong> mature such a proposition, would dem<strong>and</strong> theevidence of protracted experience. And should subsequentobservation add confirmation to the truth of the foregoing suggestion,the profession will have attained the link which nowseems deficient in the chain of ratdical treatment ofparoxysmalfever.Case No. 3, presents but little variation from the two pre--ceding cases, only being complicated by anasarca, which wasa peculiarly distressing accident. The connection between theparoxysms <strong>and</strong> the local affection is shown by the subsidenceof the latter, without any local application, on the arrest of theformer. The second administration of the Ext. Cor. preventeda return of the exacerbation.Case IV. F. C, a mechanic, set. 32, residence on the;canal—intemperate habits. On the 10th July, he was takenwith a chill succeeded by fever.- 12th, second paroxysm, <strong>and</strong>on the 14th, third paroxysm. It is proper to remark, that atthistime, he was convalescing from some hepatic affection ofthree weeks continuance, manifested by anicterodestateof theskin, <strong>and</strong> slight tenderness on pressure, over the liver <strong>and</strong> stomach.16th, 7, P.
