With every effort to discharge ourwhole duty as Editor, and after every appeal on the part of the Publisher, onlythree hundred ixibscribers have paid iov She Journal for the year 1848. This toowith payments demanded in advance. If this be the result of the cash system,what would have been the result of the credit? The publisher, therefore, distinctlydeclares, he cannot continue the publication of the work at a positivepecuniary loss to himself. The editor never has asked, never expected, andhas never received one cent from the subscription, for his labour in conductingthe Journal. He speaks thus plainly on the subject because the occasion demandsit, and experience has taught him to be candid. For the last (third) volumeof the old series, one-half of the actual cost of publication had to be paid bythe editor, viz., S900.00.In paying the subscription to the work for the first year, many have actedupon the principle they have no further payment to make—forgetting entirelythat each Vol. requires to be paid for. It will take double the present numberof subscribers, to carry on the Journal successfully and profitably. This wehave no reason to believe will be obtained, and we now announce, early in thefifth volume, the great probability of the discontinuance of the Journal alterthe piesent year, 1849. The profession of the South and West have now thesefacts before them, and they must say whether the oldest, the most prompt, andthe only monthly medical publication in this region, is to be sustained or not.In the meantime we hope to continue our labours uninterruptedly throughthe fifth volume,Death of a child in Ulero, by Lightning— the mother escaping.-^Our valuablecontributor to the Journal, Dr. J. A. Mayes, of Bradleyville, So. Ca., writes tous, under date Dec.Gth: "Looking over the pages of the December No., I noticedan account of several persons struck with lightning, the reading of whichbrought to my recollection the following case. A negro woman, about 30 yearsof age, in good health, and eight months advanced in pregnancy, was overtakenby a thunder storm in the month of August. 1848.
