Portrait of TilleIn the 1850s the Glasgow shirt and collar manufacturer,William Tillie, introduced the first sewing machine toDerry. He and his partner, John Henderson, had come tothe city in 1851.Tillie and Henderson’s shirt factory became one of thebiggest shirt factories in the world. For a century anda half shirt making was the most important industryin Derry. Tillie and Henderson‘s factory was a majoremployer right up to its closure in 1972 and was widelyregarded as a great place to work.Proposed byMaura Craig10

She set off from Newfoundland on 20 May1932, aiming her plane for Paris, and instead hit a field inDerry, known as Ballyarnett.She was one of the most significant women of the lastcentury, and she has a link with the city that should becelebrated. Doctor McDermott’s doctor’s bagA typical brown leather doctor’s bag, containing medicalequipment, which would have been used by a GP.Dr Donal McDermott was a very well known GP from thecity. Together with Dr Raymond McClean, Dr McCabe andDr Devlin he established a practice in Great James Street in1963. He was active in the Civil Rights movement and willbe remembered for delivering and in some cases for namingmany babies born during his time as a GP.Proposed byMargaret Edwards24. Lone Sailor statuetteThe Lone Sailor statuette is a replica of the Lone Sailorstatue that stands outside the US Navy Memorial inWashington DC. It represents a petty officer of the US Navyin the Second World War and the service of all members ofthe US Navy in that conflict.It was presented to the city by John Cosgrove of theDestroyer Escort Sailors’ Association (DESA) to mark thewartime links between the city and the US Navy, whichhad its first European base. Naval Operating Base (NOB)Londonderry, situated here from February 1942 untilAugust 1944.
