Gweedore Bar BookJames and Margaret Sweeney owned theGweedore Bar, Waterloo Street, from1912.James kept a record of the money heloaned to the seasonal migrants on theiroutward journey.The volume includes 1,555 entriesbetween the years 1915 to 1945, detailingthe name, place and amount.This is an unusual item showing therole played by local business men in theseasonal migration.Proposed byBrian Mitchell33. The Derry-Newfie North Atlantic Convoy BellDerry –Newfie Convoy Bell Commissioned by the CanadianNaval Officers Club in Newfoundland and presented to theLondonderry Branch of the Royal Naval Association.The Bell signifies the links between Canada and Derry ~Londonderry when the city was the base for the AtlanticConvoy Escorts. For 6 long years there was up to 140 ships inthe Foyle and over 30,000 sailors from many nations.Proposed byRobert Buchanan, Frank Brown and Eddie Lavery35. Columban ChaliceThis Chalice was produced by the Masons Company and isillustrated with images from the Book of Kells.This object is to be exhibited in the St. Columba HeritageCentre when renovation is complete in 2014.This object highlights the 6th century monastic foundationsof this city and its founding father Columba. Art throughillustrations, illuminated manuscripts, and sculptures areconsidered some of the key legacies of Columba.Proposed byGrainne McCafferty36. ‘Free Derry’ bannerThis banner symbolises Free Derry, theperiod during the late 1960s and 1970s whenthe people of the Bogside, Brandywell andCreggan erected barricades to shut out firstthe Unionist and then the British state fromtheir area.The banner was originally hung across WilliamStreet, and then later stretched across abarricade that blocked off Chamberlain Street.It was donated to the collection by JimmyPorter.Proposed byMuseum of Free Derry15
