Model ship made of boneA model of a sailing ship madefrom whale bones by Frenchprisoners interned in the cityduring the Napoleonic Wars.It is an object of quite remarkablebeauty, and its story links the citywith the Napoleonic Wars and theUnited Irishmen. 3. Civil Rights badgeThe Derry civil rights emblem was designed in 1968 by localartist Sheila McClean. The oakleaf recognises the ancientorigins of the city’s name Doire, an oakgrove. Black andwhite were used to represent all persuasions.This was a significant time for the city when people fromdifferent backgrounds came together to campaign for betterhousing, more jobs and the right to vote in local elections.Proposed byMargaret Edwards4. When he died in 1942 thefactory was left to my mother and her two sisters. They soldthe factory in the mid-50s. (The building is now occupied byDerry Youth & Community Workshop).Shirt factory buttons have been kept in the loft of mygrandparents’ home and, since the mid-sixties, in our garage.I have a range of buttons in bags, boxes, and sewn on tocardboard in individual boxes.Proposed byMo Durkan5
