3. Civil Rights badgeThe Derry civil rights emblem was designed in 1968 by localartist Sheila McClean. The oakleaf recognises the ancientorigins of the city’s name Doire, an oakgrove. Black andwhite were used to represent all persuasions.This was a significant time for the city when people fromdifferent backgrounds came together to campaign for betterhousing, more jobs and the right to vote in local elections.Proposed byMargaret Edwards4. Undertones album coverThe Undertones are recognised as one of thegreatest bands to come from the city.The music of the Undertones is a soundtrack for thecity, still sounding as fresh as when it was recorded.Legendary DJ John Peel nominated ‘Teenage Kicks’as the most influential song of his time.Proposed byBernadette Walsh5. When he died in 1942 thefactory was left to my mother and her two sisters. They soldthe factory in the mid-50s. (The building is now occupied byDerry Youth & Community Workshop).Shirt factory buttons have been kept in the loft of mygrandparents’ home and, since the mid-sixties, in our garage.I have a range of buttons in bags, boxes, and sewn on tocardboard in individual boxes.Proposed byMo Durkan5
