It has decals and a brassgovernment plate with the following infoon it:Registration USAF 63D1567F.E 2835 1974 0334REMS INVENTORYThere is a large brass plaque withthe date of purchase, engine number, manufacture, etc., Corps of EngineersUS ARMY NOM Tractor Wheeled, IndustrialPneumatic Tires GED, 37255175 DBP, Stock NO FSN 2420-050-8648, Contract NO PO NO 88-A 49976;Purchase Date 10-63. It also has a barcode from the University of MA, Amherst:UMA 031938If you or your readers would haveany suggestions on finding informationI would greatly appreciate it. What I amtrying to find is any history of where thetractor was used and what it was used for.I am working with the editor of ourFerguson Tractor Club on an article orpossibly a complete magazine dedicatedto early Massey Ferguson Tractors usedin the military. Our magazine is calledFerguson Furrows.I have the parts book on this tractorand the owners manual is not much differentthan the agricultural tractor. If I could find out any informationon the history of this tractor it would begreatly appreciated. I could not find outanything from the numbers on the tractor.Would you know what they mean, orwhere the tractor would have been?—David Lorydavelory@centurytel.net608.348.6344WEIGHT LIMITS IN CALIFORNIAHi John:In reference to my letter printed onpage 16 of the February 2013 issue ofMVM, I made a mistake. The maximumGVW allowed for driving a 3-axle vehicleis not 10,000 lbs. as I stated, butonly 6,000 lbs! This means you definitelyneed a commercial license in Californiato drive a Dodge WC 62/63.I think this is not fair. In other statesthe rules are different.Perhaps an article would be of interest toall of us detailing the different ways theindividual states are handling this problem. Then we should try to get the lawspertaining to drivers licenses changed. Itmakes little sense to require a commerciallicense of drivers of historical vehiclesthat are not used for hire.Today, farmers and firefighters todayalready are exempt— at least in California,to some extent.—Herman Pfautervia emailDEDICATED READERLOOKS TO HOBBY FUTUREHi John,I have a confession. I let my subscriptionlaps and even though I recently paidit, I found that the February issue was outas I was spending a gift card at Barnes& Noble. I did the walk of shame andbought a copy as I found this issue ofgreat interest.A couple of years ago, I had realizedthat the future of our hobby is going tohave a tough time because of the retirementof some very key surplus dealersthat I have dealt with over the years. Laterthat year, I walked around our own rallyand saw who was in attendance. Eventhough I know a few now, none wereunder the age of 30, and these numbersare going to be hard to support the largerevents. Now unless the events become onebig parking lot for us 90-yearr-old ODgreen wheelchair drivers, these large MVshows will become a thing of the past. So, our club here in Vermont came upwith its own “youth membership.”This is where someone who has theinterest can become better acquaintedwith the vehicles, and what it is like tooperate and maintain them with somehistory as the basis. We have had somepretty good results with the program inthe last couple of years and we enjoy it.Now you might consider how to getsomeone so young involved with the interest. You are like me, as I also comefrom the model-building era. I also hadthe luxury of growing up in the field ofaviation and my playground was a hangarfilled with airplanes such as our familyowned N3N-3 and BT-13. If I was notat home, I would be at the big airportthat was the home of 5 Douglas C-47’spainted up in accurate Normandy markingswhile still earning there keep flyingfreight. My cousin and I were the terrorof hangar, running around enginesand flying missions inside the airplanethat might be a recent inspection. Beingaround airplanes like this could be partof it I was always reading military historybooks at school and most of my book10 www.militaryvehiclesmagazine.com
