Personal experience with atactical nuclear weapons systemThe DavyCrockettby Joe JackanIn 1961, I began an all expense paid vacation courtesy of myUncle Sam. After Basic and AIT training, I was sent to Germany.Once there I joined a Davy Crockett squad. The DavyCrockett system had limitations that soon prompted its withdrawalfrom service in Europe. Regardless, it served as a psychologicaldeterrent to aggression by the Eastern European countries. Today, few people are aware of the tactical nuclear weapons that wereavailable at that time. This is an attempt to shed some light on oneof those weapons.Davy Crockett was a tactical nuclear weapons system consistingof two launchers. The smaller 120mm XM-28 had a rangeof 1.24 miles and the larger 155mm XM-29 had a range of 2.49miles. They both fired the XM-388 projectile. It was bomb shapedwith rounded nose cone and four stabilizing fins. It weighed 76pounds and was 2.5 feet long and 11 inches in diameter. The W54warhead portion weighed 51 pounds and had an immediate lethalradiation exposure radius of 10,000 rem out to 164 yards and adelayed fatal dose of 600 rem within 150 yards of blast center. Thekill zone was ¼ mile and could last for weeks. Anyone within 500feet would be dead within hours.A 37mm spotting round was fired from a rifle beneath thelaunch tube to verify aim. The officer in charge could set the burstheight by flipping a switch on the side of the warhead. The firecrew would also receive a substantial dose of radiation if withinYou can view Davy Crockettmaterial at the following museums:Air Force Space & Missile Museum,Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, FloridaNational Atomic Museum, Albuquerque, New MexicoNational Infantry Museum, Fort Benning, GeorgiaUnited States Army Ordnance Museum,Aberdeen Proving Ground, MarylandWatervliet Arsenal Museum, Watervliet, New YorkWest Point Museum, West Point, New YorkAtomic Testing Museum, Las Vegas, NevadaDon F. Pratt Museum, Fort Campbell,Clarksville, TennesseeThe XM28 was designed as a tripod-mounted, tactical nuclearweapon delivery system. The M38A1D mounted the M28 launcher fitted with the M388projectile.1.7 miles of the blast. The crew would fire from behind a hill andkeep heads down if possible.Originally conceived as an infantry squad weapon, it could becarried into battle as a launcher tripod and warhead to be set upand launched to engage enemy units. The concept was later developedto be carried by jeeps and armored personnel carriers. Thiswas more flexible and allowed multiple warheads to be carried. The M38A1D Jeep was the first to mount the M28. Later, theM151A1D replaced it. The M113 and later M116 armored personnelcarriers were used to carry Davy Crockett tripod launchers. The launcher tripod could also be setup on the cargo beds or M35and M54 trucks.During the 1960s, the Eastern Bloc armies depended uponmassive infantry concentrations while the West had already startedto reduce personnel and depend more on technology. The DavyCrockett made sense in this environment but it was inaccurate anda danger to those who employed it.In 1963, while reviewing troops in Germany, President Kennedyasked about the accuracy and destructive power of the weapon.Later that year, he ordered removal of all Davy Crockett weaponsfrom Germany. It remained in the United States Army inventoryuntil 1971. Its place was taken by nuclear-tipped artillery shells. ✪Military Vehicles Magazine June 2013 77
