eports were about some dogfight or tankbattle in WWII or Vietnam. I would liketo say that its was because of all of this inmy life but recently in the last few years Ihave found it to be false.Recently, a thread was started on aWarbird Forum about the future andthey have the same feeling we have todaywithin our own. My recent reminderwas when a owner of a P-51 had postedthat when he took his airplane to a recent“Gathering of Mustangs,” he pulled hisyoung daughter out of school to go andshe got to meet the pilots that flew Mustangsin WWII. She got to interact andhear the stories of how the airplane wasused and this again hit home and whereI got my start.Since the age of 6, our family tripswould often take us by some strange placeslike Fredricksburg, Marie’s Heightsand Spottsylvania. At each location myfather would open a book and throughhim the voice of my 3rd great grandfatherwould tell us about what it was like for aboy of 19 to be away from home.At 10, I witnessed a event at my fatherscompany Christmas party whereone of the employees had too much todrink. He began to tell how he and hisbuddies were left laying in the mud ona hillside in Vietnam. I still vividly rememberthe anger in his voice as this wasno book, no TV, this was real. He wouldeventually storm out of the room with hisfellow veteran following after apologizingfor his friend. At 14, I built three models for a B-17Bomb Group Reunion that my father washelping to host. My three airplanes sat atthe end of the buffet table for the reuniondinner. That night, many veterans cameup to me and shook my hand for makingthem. One man was the only survivor ofa airplane that I had modeled. He told meabout that day over Germany when hisfriends lost their lives. It is things like this that I have personallycontinued to do for most of mylife. Now that I am 41, and I now have adaughter who just turned 1, I have realizedthat this is my direction and how shewill be involved. Being with those whomaintained and operated these machinesof war. Being around men like these haskept me going and still pushes me to helppreserve their history. I will not force herto get her hands dirty with PM’s but I seeher being around me as I am around themand if she takes anything away from theseexperiences in her life, it would be onething—Respect.—Jeff HoughtonRolling Line Haul Museumhttp://linehaulrvn.tripod.comC4P FRAM FILTERS FOR JEEPSGreetings John,I wanted to let you know of a gasketproblem I had with FRAM oil filters. The Military Standard oil filter containerused by the WWII MB and GPW Jeeps(and many other vehicles) which use the“C4P” oil filter provided by FRAM. Theissue, and big problem, is that FRAMdiscontinued providing the larger gasketfor the above mentioned container. Theyonly provide the smaller canister gasketthat also used the same C4P filter. Thenon-standard is much smaller and willnot fit the Military Standard canister lid.I found this out when I bought threefilters from my local parts store that Ihave been doing business with for morethan thirty years. I first thought it was justmissing but quickly learned that FRAMno longer supplied two gaskets in the boxwith the filter. I learned that some midlevel management person made the executivedecision that there aren’t enoughold WWII Military Standard canistersout there for FRAM to continue to supplythat particular gasket. I had just boughtthree!I called FRAM FILTRATION (1-800-890-2075) and spoke with GarySnider and Marty Lehman. They wereboth great and even knew all about theMilitary Standard oil filter canister usedby MB and GPW Jeeps. They quicklyfound the root cause of the missing gasketand assured me it would be remedied.Gary sent me three new gaskets that weremissing from my original purchase.Should anyone find themselves needingthe Military Standard canister lidgasket (which is about 5” in outside diameter),you can call the number listedabove, or write to:FRAM FILTRATION28399 Cedar Park Blvd.Perrysburg, Ohio 43551-4864C/O: Gary SniderI hope this information will helpanyone that has had the same problem. The only fix at the time of changing yourfilter is to use the old gasket over again ifit’s still serviceable or make a new one byhand out of cork or rubber sheet gasket. Both of which are never available at thetime you need them!—Chuck ChapmanTaylor, MichiganWHAT’S THIS INSIGNIA?John:I posted this photo on MVM’s Facebookpage for a non-computer savvyfriend who is trying to get some infoabout this 1941 Dodge WC 1/2-ton truck.Specifically, he is looking for help identifyingthe door markings, which appear tobe a diamond with a “1” or an “I”.It was purchased by the friend’s fatherat a surplus auction at Ft. Devens, MAaround 1946. Help solving this mysterywould be greatly appreciated.—Bill Sheabillshea@tiac.netSHARE YOUR ‘TALES FROM THE FIELD’Military Vehicles Magazine wants your “Tales from the Field.” Whether it ishow you got started in the hobby or how you enjoy it today, share your storyin up to 1,000 words and 3-4 photos (high resolution, 600pixels x 900pixelsminimum).
