Overcoming the Fear of a Child’s Health
One of the most precious moments
in a couple’s lives is the day their
child(ren) are born. Throughout the
nine months of pregnancy, most parents
are concerned that their child be
born healthy. But sometimes, even if
you do all the right things, complications
arise at birth.
Van and Elsie Montgomery
brought their first child, Tripp, into
the world ten years ago, and everything
went pretty normal. Three
years later, they weren’t as lucky
the second time around. Their oldest
daughter, Andi, was born with a
defect.
“I didn’t have any complications
during pregnancy,” Elsie said. “I
wasn’t expecting anything to be
wrong. But the day I was being released
from the hospital, I was told
by the doctor that my daughter, Andi,
was born with a congenital heart defect.
I thought she was a healthy 8
pound 13 ounce baby.”
Andi was born with Ventricular
Septal Defect, or more commonly
known as a hole in her heart. “The
doctor released her to come home,”
said Elsie, “but I remember him telling
me ‘Take her home, treat her like
a normal baby, but make sure she
doesn’t stop breathing.’ It scared me
to death.”
The doctors wanted to perform surgery
to repair the hole in Andi’s heart,
but wanted to wait until she was a little

necessary to be
able to attend this
year’s National
Jamboree held in
Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia.
The jamboree is held every
four years, but since this
year marked the centennial,
the Jamboree was held
off to five years. “We were
supposed to go last year,”
Gregory said, “but instead
we waited a year to be able
to celebrate 100 years. The
next Jamboree will be held
in three years to get things
back on track.”
In an effort to raise enough
money to participate in the
Jamboree, Gregory sold
popcorn, and ended up being
the top seller out of the
troops of the Indian Waters
Council. “I didn’t want to
miss this event,” he said.

The twelve day trip began
on July 24, and Gregory was
packed and ready to go. “We
had to pack a backpack to
last for the first two days,”
he said. “We were able to
pack a duffel bag, but we
weren’t able to use it until
the third day. For the first
two days, we went to Kings
Dominion. But on the 26th,
we pitched our tents at Fort
A.P. Hill.”

Publisher’s Note: Vacations: Relaxing or Adventurous?
Vacation for my family this year entailed
a trip to Myrtle Beach. Most of the
time, we usually only take a few days,
but this year we planned for an entire
week.
Now vacations are supposed to be
about relaxing, not working, and a chance
to unwind from day to day life. But with
the economy being what it is, and the
cost of everything rising, conserving was
definitely a consideration.
My husband and I were fortunate
enough to find things to do that were inexpensive.
His favorite part was the daily
walks at 6:00am. Yes, I said 6am, and I
also said “his.” I consider myself an early
riser waking at about 7:30 or so, but not 6. And this being
vacation, I surely wasn’t rising that early. Therefore, HE
enjoyed his daily walks alone. (We did take several walks
together, but they were in the late evening).
A friend of ours knew how much my husband loves baseball,
so when we arrived at our hotel, there was a package
waiting for us. Our friend had purchased two tickets to the
Myrtle Beach Pelicans All Star Game. Now I like baseball
too, but not as much as my husband. However, going to the
game was anything but boring.
When we arrived, we found that our seats were really
great seats- right down the first base line. Although the seats
are great for viewing the entire field, guess what, they were

also great for foul balls. During the second
inning, a foul ball came flying towards
us. I was keeping my eye on the
ball, and yelling at my husband to catch
it if it comes close to us. It was pretty
high in the air, and the ocean breeze carried
it, appearing that it was going behind
us. Suddenly, the wind shifted and
the ball changed direction. Thinking it
was going behind us was a mistake. The
ball landed on the upper portion of my
right bare leg with astounding speed. It
shocked me. I didn’t even realize I had
been hit at first. My first instinct was to
grab the ball.
The fire department came over and offered
an ice pack. I didn’t think it was that bad, but the bruise
began to develop. I don’t know how, but that small baseball
incurred a bruise twice its size. The ice did keep down the
swelling though.
After the realization of what had occurred, I decided to
get up and walk around some. I wanted to make sure, for
one, that I could walk. Although I limped a little, I was okay.
But for the rest of the game, I nearly climbed under the seat
every time I saw a ball coming in our direction.

Blythewood area now has its very own Historical Society
– the newest Historical Society in the State. Whether
you just moved in or are “from” here, if you have an
interest in the history of this area the Society encourages
you to join. All those joining in 2010 will be recognized
as Founding Members of the Society. The Society’s
mission, as stated in its by-laws, is “to protect, nurture
and support the historical, pre-historical and cultural
heritage of Blythewood through preservation, advocacy
and education.” So if you have an interest in genealogy,
the railroad influence, old maps, gathering oral histories,
preserving historical buildings, documenting cemeteries or
gravesites, developing educational programs for schools,
sharing old photographs and more, the Society needs you
as a member. Bi-monthly meetings will provide you an
opportunity to learn about Blythewood and to contribute
your knowledge to the Society and its members.
The initial meeting will be held Tuesday, September
21, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Blythewood High School’s
Media Center. The Society will continue to meet every
other month, September through May of each year. A
membership drive is being conducted throughout the
summer. Membership dues, if you join now, are $35.00
for adults and $10.00 for students (kindergarten through
graduate school) and will carry through until January 1,
2012. After that time, an annual renewal of membership
will be $25.00 per year for adults and $10.00 for students.

Museum Launches Membership Program. The South
Carolina Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum is

• TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) is a noncommercial
weight control organization in which members
meet weekly to receive support for adherence to their diet
plan. There are no dietary products to buy or standard diet
to follow. The annual membership fee is only $26. You

no charge and no obligation. The “weigh-in” is at 6:30pm

Two of the most eventful and memorable moments for
Gregory (with the exception of seeing Mike Rowe, Taylor
Swift and Sergeant Slaughter) was the night of a severe thunderstorm
and getting stuck in the mud on the way home.
“The night of the thunderstorm,” said Gregory, “we had to
go out at 3am and lower the tarps to keep the rain out of the
tents. The Scouts worked together, and we had to tie strings
to our wrists and the tarps to keep the wind from blowing
them away. It was an adventure, but it taught us the ability to
work together and to come together in time of need.
“Even more memorable though, was the trip home. All

mud. We waited around for a tow truck to come, and when
it arrived, it was stuck in the mud. Looking back now, it was
funny.”
Gregory raised most of the money to attend the jamboree
from the sale of popcorn, but the remainder was given to
him by his grandfather and former Scout Leader, Robert L.
Hartman. “I am thankful to my grandfather for helping me
out,” Gregory said. “I bought him a hat to bring back commemorating
the 100 year celebration.”
President Obama was scheduled to appear at the jamboree,
but due to schedule conflicts, could not attend. Instead
though, he sent his regards via videotape.

There’s a new church in town and it is a contemporary
baptist church. The church uses a worship band with drums,
keyboards, guitars, etc, media presentations and other
methods to communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastor
Wilson, a Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
graduate, recently said, “The methods of communicating
the gospel may change from one generation to another generation
but the message stays the same. The message we
share is that God loves you, died on the cross for you and
has a designed plan for your life; it really is that simple.”

Urinary problems in pets
Infections of the urinary tract, stones in the urinary tract
and tumors in the urinary tract all occur with the same frequency
in our pets as they do in the human population.
Symptoms are varied, but usually are associated with frequent
urination, increased water consumption, urination in
unusual places or sudden loss of housebreaking. Blood in
the urine or straining to urinate are cardinal signs of serious
problems associated with the urinary tract.
In male cats and male dogs, due to the restriction of the
urethra (the tube leading from the bladder to the outside),
stones that form in the kidney or the bladder can lodge in
this restricted portion and can lead to complete obstruction
of the bladder and a life-threatening situation.
If your dog or cat exhibits any of these symptoms or acts
constipated or uncomfortable when attempting to have a
bowel movement or urinate, get them to a veterinarian as
soon as possible. Proper veterinary care rendered in time
can save your pet’s life, and most problems associated with
the urinary tract can be cured or satisfactorily
controlled to your (and
your pet’s) satisfaction.

It seems the Victorian Age is upon
us once again. When a TV show such
as “The Biggest Loser” becomes a sustained
hit and not a one-season wonder,
you can be sure obesity is rampant. In
an ironic way “The Biggest Loser”
glorifies being fat. Nothing new there.
In the Victorian age, the ideal body
type for a woman was plump, fleshy,
and full-figured. We live in The Age
of Gargantua. No wonder I see Rubenesque
women and men wherever I
go.
Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish
painter famous for his paintings of
plump, round women. Were Rubens
around today, he’d find plenty of
women to pose for paintings. The
age of girl watching just isn’t what it
used to be. Remember that song, “I’m
A Girl Watcher” by the O’Kaysions?
Maybe we should rename it “I’m A
Girth Watcher.”
There was a time when being overweight
was a mark of social distinction.
To be thin was an admission of being
poor, a member of an undesirable social
class. Though wafer-thin, anorexic
models grab headlines all the time, as
a country we get bigger and bigger. No
wonder all-you-can-eat buffets are so
prevalent.
The Center for
Disease Control
and Prevention uses
a weight and height
formula to calculate
a number called the
“body mass index,”
and BMI determines
adults’ overweight
and obesity
ranges. (The metrics
are slightly different
for men and
women.) According
to the CDC, an
adult standing 5”9’
who weighs from
125 to 168 pounds and a BMI of 18.5
to 24.9 is considered to have a healthy
weight. When we go from 169 pounds
to 202 pounds and a BMI of 25 to 29.9
we enter the overweight range. Weigh
in at 203 pounds or more with a BMI
of 30 or higher and we’re in the land
of obesity.

I am no skinny
Minnie. I weighed
142 pounds when
I graduated from
high school. Today,
I weigh 193.
I have, however,
waged a 30-year
war against weight
gain. Back in the
early 1980s, I got
into running. I’ve
been running ever
since. If I weren’t a
devoted runner, my
waistline would be
around 48 inches,
and I’d probably
weigh in around 220. In short, I’d be
Rubenesque. Exercise works. I love
exercising but I am in a minority.
I hear all kinds of excuses as to why
people can’t exercise. And I hear all
sorts of rationalizations that try to justify
being overweight. Aren’t chubby,
roly-poly babies cute? Think again.
Those little rolls of fat plaguing babies
can slow their ability to crawl and walk
according to a recent study the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Some folks attribute obesity to being
poor. What is cheaper? Fresh fruit and
vegetables in season or cookies, chocolate
bars, and soft drinks?
I gassed up my car Tuesday at a
Sunoco at 11:30 in the morning. Inside,
I stood behind a denizen of Gargantua,
a massive lady who dominated her
surroundings. She plopped down a bag
of chips, a bag of pork rinds, a bag of
candy, chocolate bars, and a 34-ounce
Coca Cola onto the counter. Lunch I
suppose. Don’t tell me she bought all
that stuff because it’s all she can afford.
Most anything in a convenience
store costs a premium.
So, why are she and many Americans
sitting on the air hose and blowing up
bigger and bigger each day? A combination
of bad habits, bad choices, and
laziness combined with some revealing
facts. Americans eat more sugar than
any other people on earth. We eat more
often than any other people on earth,
and we do less physical work that any

South Carolina Lions Clubs Host
International Students
Each year the South Carolina Lions host 10 to12 international
students for a one month stay. Students arrived in
South Carolina on Saturday, July 17th and were greeted by
host families from all over the state. Each student spent two
weeks with their SC families. On Saturday, July 31st the
students and families gathered at Forest Lake Presbyterian
Church in Columbia and enjoyed a wonderful spaghetti
dinner with all the trimmings provided by the Columbia
Northeast Lions Club. Many students were just meeting
for the first time and this gave them time to get to know
each other.
The second half of their stay in South Carolina will be
a “traveling camp” where the youths will travel across the
state, enjoying the attractions and special offerings of our
beautiful state.
Bob and Jackie Cox of Blythewood hosted Simon Lindinger
from Austria. Simon stayed with The Cox family for
two weeks, enjoying water parks, baseball games, horseback
riding, touring the State House, and many other great
adventures. Bob became interested in the Lion’s Youth Exchange
program during the Summer of 2009 when he vis-
ited the Blythewood Lions Club meeting and helped feed
lunch to the exchange students. After joining the Blythewood
Lions Club, Bob and his wife, Jackie, and son, Joey,
decided to host a student for 2010, as they had enjoyed
hosting exchange students in the past.
The Blythewood Lions Club hosted a pizza lunch for the
“travelers” on Sunday, August 1st. A special thanks to the
Springhill Suites for providing a wonderful room and amenities

doctor explained to me that if they
ruptured the part of her heart that
controlled her heart rate, she would
need a pacemaker implanted and have
it for the rest of her life. Throughout
the surgery, I sat waiting, and hoping,
and praying that everything was going
well.”

causes hormone deficiency. “She’s
on medication,” said Elsie, “and will
have to take it the rest of her life.”
After overcoming VSD and coping
with Andi’s Hypothyroidism, Elsie
and Van noticed that Andi had something
on her lip. “It looked like she
was always wearing lipstick,” said Elsie.
“Her bottom lip was really red.”
Andi was once again visiting the
doctor. “We were told she had a Hemangioma,
a birthmark. It was a blood
filled tumor on her lip. She was having
difficulty speaking and she would
drool all the time. Her doctor said to
just leave it alone. But we researched
it some, and decided to take her to a
plastic surgeon. When she was thirteen
months old, she underwent surgery
again to have it removed.”
Shortly after her surgery, Andi began
talking and was able to pronounce

her words. “I think she would have
had a lot of difficulty if we hadn’t pursued
the surgery,” Van said.
Andi is now six years old and is
doing well. The Montgomery’s have
since had another child, Ginny. “We
were thankful there weren’t any complications
with Ginny,” said Elsie.
“She is only one year old, and she was
definitely a surprise.”
The Montgomery’s faith in God is
what they say pulled them through the
trials of Andi’s health. “When Andi
was going in for the surgery to repair
her heart, our minister at the time, and
two lay leaders from our church, came
over and baptized her,” said Elsie. “It
was such a moving experience. Without
our faith in God and His plan for
Andi, I am not sure that we would have
survived. Although we were scared for
our daughter, we knew that He was
present with her through it all.”
