In this day and time, it’s easy
to get discouraged when things
don’t work out. But that wasn’t
the case for the 2007 Varsity
football players at Blythewood
High School. Nor was it the
case for their coach, Geremy
Saitz.
When Blythewood High
School opened its doors, there
wasn’t a varsity football team.
The second year of the school,
the varsity football team lost
their first game, but came back
and won the next fourteenand
the state championship.
Last year, the players weren’t
allowed to compete in the state
championship due to an error
in judgment by their coach. But
in spite of that fact, the players
(knowing this at the start of the
season) gave it their all.
Coach Geremy Saitz has been
with Blythewood High School
since their doors opened. He
began as an assistant coach, and
is now the head coach for The
Bengals. Coach Saitz was born
in a small town near Denmarkthe
town of Govan. His family
moved to Bamberg when he
was ten years old so that he
would be able to play Little
League Football. His mother,
Kathy Saitz Thomas, raised
Geremy and his two brothers by
Geremy Saitz, head football coach of The Blythewood Bengals
herself. “My mom was a single
mother,” Saitz said. “And I owe
a great deal to her. She always
emphasized academics in our
house. Throughout all of her
difficulties, she taught myself
and my brothers the importance
of an education. She’s very dear
to my heart.”
Saitz attended Bamberg
Ehrhardt High School and
graduated from Newberry
College. “I’d have to say that
two of my dearest mentors were
coaches,” Saitz said. “Coach
David Horton is the all-time
Wilson
winning baseball Coach in the
State, and Coach Leon Maxwell
was a six time all-winning coach
in football. Their instruction on
life’s morals and work ethics
are what I remember most.”
Saitz said he knew what it
felt like as a player to win a
championship. “We won the
state championship when I
was in high school,” he said.
“And I can only imagine what
it must feel like to go through
the season knowing that you
can’t compete in the state
championship. It could have
been so easy for the team to give
up. But they didn’t. They didn’t
let it affect the way they played.
And it showed- we were 10 and
0 last year. To me, this showed
the character of the team. It
showed the perseverance and
dedication these young men
have to their school and their
community.”
Coach Saitz went a step
further to show his appreciation
to the 2007 Bengals football
team. Both years at BHS,
championship rings were
bought for the senior players,
and the other players had the
option to buy the ring. But
since the 2007 seniors weren’t
able to compete in state, Saitz
wanted to show his appreciation
for their continued success.
One by one, Coach Saitz went
to classrooms to call out each
senior and present them with
their championship ring. Each
ring consisted of a stone in the
middle, with the inscription
“Champions in Life,” and
“Blythewood High” around
the stone, the last name of
the individual player and his
number on one side of the ring,
and “undefeated 10-0” on the
other side of the ring with a
Bengal tiger in the middle.
The other day I received a phone
I remember growing up here
that day, someone had come in with
isn’t allowed to bring his dog back in the store. they may be more open at home, but for the most
Erin Peake
Contributing Writer
Have you ever looked at an old
building and wondered the story
behind it? There is an old building
in the Centerville area of Ridgeway
on Centerville Road next to the
cemetery that has a story behind
it. As a matter of fact it has many
stories to tell. Most people in
Centerville know or have at least
seen this building.
This building used to be a store,
“Harvey’s Store” as they called
it. The actual store name was
“Peake Brother’s Grocery,” and
was owned by Caliph and Harvey
Peake, the Peake brothers. It has
been there since the early 1960’s,
and it was the local place to buy
groceries and gas. Caliph Peake
built the store and needed help
running it. He knew his brother
Harvey would fit the bill.
You could say it was the heart of
the Centerville Community during
its era. It supplied bread, milk,
groceries from the fresh market
and your typical gas station items.
“It was best known for its ‘round
the heater camaraderie,’” said
Pinkey Peake, daughter-in-law
of Caliph Peake. “Smoking was
allowed, but no drinking except
for all the cokes and Pepsi’s taken
out of the old drink box with the
slide back lid filled with ice water
Harvey’s Store
This little store in Centerville, (Harvey’s Store), has a lot of history
for many residents in Ridgeway and Blythewood.
to keep the glass bottle drinks
cold. Most things that were bought
were charged until payday. When
payday came around Harvey
would ring up the total and the
cycle would begin again.”
According to Pinkey, Harvey ran
the store from dusk till whenever
people decided they wanted to go
home, which may have been 10
or 11 o’clock at night. He ran the
store this way for most of his life.
He kept the shelves stocked, so
everyone knew all their favorite
items would be there waiting for
them.
“There was no better place to
buy fresh potatoes, huge hunks
of bologna and cheese sliced off
of a big round hoop,” Pinkey
said. “Tales were weaved every
evening, Monday thru Saturday as
the local men gathered around the
wood burning stove in the winter
months and near the fan in the
summer months.”
In the upcoming issues of the
Blythewood Leader there will
be articles about the different
stories that the men “weaved
every evening,” and all the jokes
that were played at the little store.
In time, the whole history and
stories behind this little store in
Centerville, Ridgeway will be
known.
Did you do your homework from
last time? That’s ok, no pop quiz. If
you have compared a few posted fuel
economy ratings of various vehicles,
you’d have found that the mass of the
vehicle is a bigger factor than the size
of the engine. Type this one into your
browser on your computer: http://www.
automotive.com/2001/12/mitsubishi/
galant/compare/index.html Then scroll
down and open up the “fuel economy”
section and the “exterior dimensions
and weight.” You’ll find that the
Dodge Stratus R/T with a beefy 200hp
3.0l V6 engine has the exact same
posted fuel economy of 20 city and 28
hwy as does the Daewoo Leganza with
a weak hearted 2.2L 4 cylinder engine
that is only pushing 131hp. When
you look down at the weight, you’ll
see that the 2 cars are close in weight
with the Dodge only weighing 100lbs
more. Whats more, on that same page
you’ll see that the Saturn shown there
was better fuel economy listed than the
Daewoo. The Saturn’s advantage? It
Fresh Lunch Buffet Daily
Only $7.00 per Person
Got Gas (Part 9)
weighs about 200lbs less
than the Daewoo.
The science behind
all of this is a law
of physics that you
probably remember
your high school science
teacher saying; “Energy
cannot be created or
destroyed. It can only
be transformed from one
form to another.” The
vehicle’s body has mass.
Therefore, in order to
get that mass moving, you
have to invest a certain
amount of energy into
it in order to get it moving. There is
a certain minimum amount needed.
Now, we touched on that last time, but
real world driving has also proven time
and time again that the smaller engine
seems to get far greater economy than
the big engine.... why? The posted
economy ratings may not be that far
off. Well, that’s the difference between
Glen Beanard
Contributing Writer
the “test pilot” that is
driving the vehicle to
obtain those readings,
and what the average
real world person does
when they get behind
the wheel. You see, the
tested car is driven by
someone who is only
accelerating the car in
a manner that provides
the minimum amount of
energy needed to move
the vehicle. Whereas
the real-world driver
is hurrying to beat the
traffic light or is late for
work. Often, the bigger engine does
not burn more fuel because it HAS
to, but rather because it CAN. It can
produce a larger amount of power to
accelerate the vehicle more quickly
from a stop than the smaller engine,
burning more fuel all the while. As a
result, that extra potential ends up being
tapped often by the driver just because
it is there. Another way of looking
at it is that the smaller engine limits
the driver and helps to protect them
from... well... themselves. Then there
are also the individual personalities
of the driver that chose to purchase a
car with more power than that of the
owner who chose to purchase a less
powerful model. So when you go to
purchase your next vehicle, feel free
to treat yourself to the bigger engine
model as long as you can exercise
restraint to hold those extra ponies
back until they are truly needed. Over
indulgence in power will cost you at
the pump.
That is why the number one single
largest factor to fuel economy, for
better or for worse, is the driver. The
second largest is the overall mass
of the vehicle. Then, followed by
factors such as running condition of
the vehicle.
As always, if you have any questions
feel free to ask at AutoDrGlen@
Have you found yourself in need of a storage
building, a building for an office or a greenhouse
building? Handi Houses in Winnsboro can supply you
with this need.
Jimmy Talbert is the owner of Jimmy’s Appliance
Repair in Winnsboro, and he sells buildings for Handi
Houses.
Jimmy has spent all of his life in Winnsboro. When
he graduated high school, he worked for Uniroyal
for thirteen years. During this time, Jimmy would
repair appliances on the side. “Mr. Johnson owned the
appliance repair shop,” Jimmy said. “I’d come help
him whenever I could. Then in 1991, he called and
asked if I wanted to buy the business. Handi Houses
was already a part of the business when I bought it.”
Handi Houses has been building houses since 1966.
The buildings are already structured and ready to be
moved. There’s no kit, no assembly required. The
floors are constructed of 2x4 or 2x6 joist with either
5/8” or 3/4” tongue and groove exterior- depending on
the size of the building. The floor joists are mounted
on 4x6 treated skids. These features are hidden
under the floor, but are important in the strength of
the building. The buildings are wired with electrical
sockets and light fixtures. They just need to be wired
to electricity to make them ready for use. They are
portable and ready to be moved. “When someone
Jimmy still lives in Winnsboro with his wife, Janice.
When I was seven years old, my
grandfather (Papa) bought a Lowry
organ.Oh it was a thing of beauty. Two
rows of plastic black and white keys. A
curved bank of flippers that produced
the sounds of violins, cellos, oboes,
French horns, every instrument in an
orchestra. It even had lights.
There was a switch to turn it on and
it made a gentle humming sound. There
was a big pedal that you pushed to make
the sound come out. There was also a
row of petals that did other stuff. They
were a mystery to me.
Papa already played the harmonica.
His mother, who died when he was 13,
could play anything by ear. His uncle
was first chair violinist in the king’s
orchestra in Norway. And his great
grandfather was once the conductor
for the orchestra. At age 55, Papa took
organ lessons.
When it came to Papa, I got away
with anything. One of the things I
got away with was playing his organ.
My younger sister still scowls and
complains, “I couldn’t even touch his
precious organ.” I do not remember
that. What I do remember is everything
And then the organ fell off the trailer…
else about that organ.
I remember the exact
place it stood. My Papa
was a tugboat captain
for Moran Towing in
New York City. He and
my grandmother, had
bought a very small
house in upstate New
York – on Pleasant View
Road, in Pleasant Valley
(oh and it was!) It was
originally a vacation
home with three acres of
woods, fit for exploring.
The house was white
with a big porch and
black shutters. There
was a huge Blue Spruce in the front
yard. Grandma had a beautiful rock
garden in the back with a statue of St.
Theresa, her patron saint and namesake.
Grandma was Italian and the best cook.
She loved to bake and garden.
I remember the kitchen as being the
largest room in the house. Grandma
always had a red check tablecloth on the
table. There was big window next to
the table and another over the sink. The
one over the sink had
a view to the garden.
The floor was “brick”
linoleum. There was
a dining like area off
the kitchen where my
grandmother kept her
china closet and her
buffet. The buffet was
full of aprons, table
clothes and scarves.
Gorgeous scarves.
She taught me how to
tie them into haltertops
and would let me
wear them. And in one
drawer was my Papa’s
photo album. It was full
of photos from his youth and his time in
the National Guard. I loved to look at
it with him. It is still among my most
precious possessions.
The second largest room in the house
was the living room. If you came
in the front door off the porch, to the
left was the TV on which Papa loved
to watch baseball and golf, the door to
my grandparents’ room, and as you
swung to the right there was the door to
the itty, bitty bathroom, then the organ,
and the open area that was the dining
area. Another turn to the right and
there was Papa’s chair, the fireplace,
then Grandma’s chair. Another quarter
turn to the right and there was a huge
window with the couch set under it,
directly across from THE ORGAN.
Papa had a sort of “learn to play book”.
All the notes in it had name of the note
written in it. There was little cardboard
key guide that you set on the keys and
you could follow along in the book. I
loved to play Mary Had a Little Lamb,
The Marine Corps Anthem, and Silent
Night (even in the summer). Sometimes
Papa would play Brahms Lullaby when
we went to bed. (If I asked him.) I
would play those three songs over and
over and over again. I would play so
long the organ would overheat. There
would be a loud “POP!” and I would
have to turn it off and wait for it to cool
down before I could play again. I loved
that organ. Papa always said, “When I
die, I’ll give to you.” Being seven years
old, I believed Papa, who never got sick
Starting A New Chapter
College is supposed to be some
person I have become. I will
of the most exciting years of my
choose to make new memories
life; full of new experiences,
and experience new things with
increased intellectual stimulation
my old and new friends. Some
and new mistakes of a different
may make the choice to embrace
kind. It is a teenager’s first real
life in an entirely different way,
glimpse of reality. This is my first
and conduct themselves in a
real opportunity to see the world
manner that we may have found
through my own eyes instead of
reproachable before we were
the eyes of my family and friends.
offered freedom and independence
Some of us attending college for
by way of education. If we choose
the first time this fall will choose
to make good decisions, we allow
to keep our childhood friends close
our minds to be cultivated- not
and make new memories together
only by books and professors,
while others, like myself, will
but by peers, and campus life as
choose to go it alone finding myself
well. Those of us that choose to
in a new location not truly knowing
find balance in our social and
a person insight. Either way, over
intellectual development will
the course of the next four years,
Madison Cooke
quickly discover that our view
things are going to change in some
Columnist
of the world is changing and,
way for all of us. Some of us will
possibly for the first time in our
arrive on our various college campuses believing lives, our eyes are being opened. All of us will
the next four years of our lives will be very similar leave college being a different person than the one
to the last four- and for some of us it will. There may that nervously awaited their professor’s arrival on
be a small number of people who choose to remain the first day of class. It is the job of each of us to
in the confinements of their high school clicks, and decide how we would like our college experience to
unfortunately, for those who make this decision, shape who we will become. College is an exciting
they may miss out on all the wonderful things they and terrifying time in my life, because for the first
could learn from the unfamiliar faces living just time, I am forced to sink or swim, to succeed or
across the hall. For me though, college will be a fail without the interference or dependence of my
completely different experience. I will choose to parents. I am- for the first time- beginning to learn
balance my relationships in a different manner. As what it means to be an adult. Regardless of which
a nine-year-old Girl Scout, I learned a song that college freshmen decide to attend, it boils down to
advised me on exactly what to do as I embark on whether we, as students, decide to sink or swim. I
this new chapter in my life. The song advised me to have already chosen to be one of the people who
make new friends, but to also keep old friendships will swim, and, hopefully all of my peers will make
alive because of their role in shaping the type of this decision as well.
From Page 10
would live forever.
When I was about
25, and my son was 18
months old, Papa did die.
My mother went to New
York to help her brother.
Along with the organ,
my mother shipped
my grandmother’s
cookbooks, one table
clothe, her kitchen table
and chairs, her pots and
pans, my grandparents
bedroom set, the buffet
and lots of other little
things. And of course, the
photo album.
When the organ arrived
in California, it would
not play. I was never able
to fix it. Nevertheless, I
moved it, and everything
else from California to
Virginia, to Texas, to
South Carolina. I moved
it from post housing to
civilian housing. When
I separated from my first
husband, he safeguarded
about YOUR planet.
Get informed and make
conscious decisions every
day about the way you
live. This is our planet.
This vast, beautiful planet
it for me for three years.
When I bought my first
house, he brought it to me.
When I remarried, my son
kept it for me. I planned
to give it (someday) to me
daughter Freya who had
inherited Papa’s family’s
talent for music.
Then, when Logan
moved out of his
apartment, it was time for
the organ to come home
again. I decided on its
rightful place and what
would have to be moved
from the house to fit it.
My husband came and
loaded it in the trailer
with the help of my
daughter’s boyfriend. It’s
very heavy. Off it went.
About an hour and
half later, Dear Husband
came back to Logan’s
apartment, which I was in
the process of cleaning.
He told me he needed to
talk to me outside. He
had a very strange look
on his face. He said, “The
organ fell off the trailer.”
I immediately started to
cry because no good news
is ours, and we should be
committed to ensuring its
and our longevity. After
all, the last time I checked,
Mars wasn’t quite ready
for habitation!
could possibly follow “the
organ fell off the trailer.”
He looked so sad and like
a child that had broken
some extremely valuable
thing. “We picked up
all the pieces,” he said
hopefully. I just sobbed
harder. I told myself
to stop it. It was just a
big piece of furniture
that didn’t even work
anymore. I made myself
stop crying. “It’s ok,” I
told DH.
And I meant it. It is ok.
I’ll miss it sitting silently
in my house. I’ll miss
cleaning it every week.
I’ll miss the cats using
it as a hiding place.
(They climb inside the
opening for the big
pedal). I’ll still have the
memories. Eventually,
I will go in the storage
shed and sift through the
salvaged pieces. Maybe
I can use them to make
something.
One more thing. DH
has to tell Mom what
happened to her father’s
organ.
