• The Fairfield County Museum will present an<br />

exhibition titled “Birthing a Community- Fairfield<br />

County Midwives.” All are welcome. The exhibition<br />

will run July 10, 2008 – December 31, 2008. Included<br />

in the exhibition are: Tools of the trade dating back<br />

to the 1800s, Photos of midwives in training at<br />

Benedict College and the Penn School, Medical<br />

items belonging to Fairfield County’s own Drs Floyd,<br />

Buchanan, and McCants, photos from the collection<br />

of the Caroliniana Library at USC, items from The<br />

Penn Center on St. Helena Island, and much more.<br />

• On Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 7:00 PM, Slow<br />

Food Columbia will host its premier event to raise funds<br />

to help send Ben and Kristen DuBard, two farmers<br />

from Blythewood, to Terra Madre in Turin, Italy.<br />

Ben and Kristen DuBard of Five Leaves Farms have<br />

been chosen to be delegates from our state to attend<br />

the third edition of the biennial international meeting<br />

of the Terra Madre Network. Held in October of this<br />

year, Terra Madre brings together food communities,<br />

cooks, academics and youth delegates for four days to<br />

work toward increasing small-scale, traditional, and<br />

sustainable food production. The premier event of Slow<br />

Food Columbia will be held at Terra Restaurant in West<br />

Columbia and will feature local food donated from<br />

producers across the Midlands. Tickets for the August<br />

21st event will be $65 for Slow Food members and $75<br />

for the general community. More information abut the<br />

• Church-wide Yard Sale Fundraiser. North Point<br />

Community Church will be holding a Church-wide Yard<br />

Sale Fundraiser, Saturday, Sept. 6, from 7:00 a.m. – 2:00<br />

p.m. The Women’s Ministry of North Point will use the<br />

proceeds of this sale to offset the cost of transportation<br />

they will incur when they attend the upcoming “Women<br />

of Faith Conference” later that month in Atlanta, GA.<br />

Anyone who has items to donate for the sale may drop<br />

them off at the church Friday, Sept. 5, from 1:00 p.m.<br />

– 7 p.m. North Point is located at 532 N. Brickyard<br />

• Spring Valley High School will hold its 20 year reunion<br />

weekend for the class of 1988 October 3-4, 2008. During the<br />

month of August, ticket price is $45 per person; in September<br />

the ticket price is $55 per person and cost at the door is $75<br />

per person. On Friday, October 3, enjoy a Spring Valley High<br />

School Campus tour at 6pm, and at 7:30pm, watch the Spring<br />

Valley versus Sumter football game. The class reunion will be<br />

Saturday, October 4 at the Lake House at Clemson Extension<br />

• The MOMS Club of Columbia-North, a support<br />

• The BHAAS (Bethel-Hanberry Athlectic Alumni<br />

Association) will hold a membership drive and tailgate at<br />

the Blythewood High vs. Fairfield Central football game on<br />

August 29 on the home side of the football game beginning<br />

at 4pm. All former athletes, coaches, cheerleaders,<br />

statisticians, AD’s, etc., of this former high school and<br />

also the latter high schools of the district are welcome to<br />

come and inquire. The BHAAS is driven to help the youth<br />

in our community with leadership, menorship and eventually<br />

• Free Diabetes Support Group. Join us on the first<br />

Tuesday of each month at the YMCA in Lake Carolina<br />

from 7:00-8:30pm. Each month there will be a different<br />

speaker or resource-a time to learn new strategies, try<br />

new products and find resources. Open to the public,<br />

• Minnie Dix, (who’s chidren’s book “Belcher” was<br />

recently reviewed in The Blythewood Leader), will<br />

kick off a book signing beginning August 16, 2-6pm<br />

at Waldenbooks at Sumter Mall in Sumter. Ms. Dix is<br />

now writing as Leigh McKnight, and her most recent<br />

book “From My Front Porch” has been released by<br />

Urban Books of New York. Other book signing dates<br />

• Support all the athletic teams at Blythewood High<br />

School. Memberships and volunteer positions in the<br />

Blythewood High School Athletic Booster Club are<br />

available now! The first Bengal football game is August<br />

29th and you can skip the ticket booth line! There<br />

are five different plans. Business plans are $450 and<br />

include a 4 X 6 sign on display at all outdoor sporting<br />

events along with 20 home varsity passes. Your ad<br />

will also be included in the BHS Athletic Booster Club<br />

quarterly news letter. The popular Bengal Parking Plan<br />

is available for $250. There are only half the number of<br />

these memberships compared to last season and include<br />

reserved parking for football games and 20 passes to<br />

any home varsity sport. These are going quickly. Other<br />

memberships are: Student-$40/5 passes; Individual-<br />

$50/5 passes; Family-$150/20 passes. Memberships<br />

include Bengal Dollars for the concession stands and a<br />

different teams and coaches each week, but volunteers<br />

are needed to help set up and manage concessions for<br />
