When I was seven years old, my grandfather (Papa) bought a Lowry organ.Oh it was a thing of beauty. Two rows of plastic black and white keys. A curved bank of flippers that produced the sounds of violins, cellos, oboes, French horns, every instrument in an orchestra. It even had lights. There was a switch to turn it on and it made a gentle humming sound. There was a big pedal that you pushed to make the sound come out. There was also a row of petals that did other stuff. They were a mystery to me. Papa already played the harmonica. His mother, who died when he was 13, could play anything by ear. His uncle was first chair violinist in the king’s orchestra in Norway. And his great grandfather was once the conductor for the orchestra. At age 55, Papa took organ lessons. When it came to Papa, I got away with anything. One of the things I got away with was playing his organ. My younger sister still scowls and complains, “I couldn’t even touch his precious organ.” I do not remember that. And then the organ fell off the trailer… else about that organ. I remember the exact place it stood. My Papa was a tugboat captain for Moran Towing in New York City. He and my grandmother, had bought a very small house in upstate New York – on Pleasant View Road, in Pleasant Valley (oh and it was!) It was originally a vacation home with three acres of woods, fit for exploring. The house was white with a big porch and black shutters. There was a huge Blue Spruce in the front yard. Grandma had a beautiful rock garden in the back with a statue of St. Theresa, her patron saint and namesake. Grandma was Italian and the best cook. She loved to bake and garden. I remember the kitchen as being the largest room in the house. Grandma always had a red check tablecloth on the table. There was big window next to the table and another over the sink. There was a dining like area off the kitchen where my grandmother kept her china closet and her buffet. The buffet was full of aprons, table clothes and scarves. Gorgeous scarves. She taught me how to tie them into haltertops and would let me wear them. And in one drawer was my Papa’s photo album. It was full of photos from his youth and his time in the National Guard. I loved to look at it with him. It is still among my most precious possessions. The second largest room in the house was the living room. If you came in the front door off the porch, to the left was the TV on which Papa loved to watch baseball and golf, the door to my grandparents’ room, and as you swung to the right there was the door to the itty, bitty bathroom, then the organ, and the open area that was the dining area. Another turn to the right and there was Papa’s chair, the fireplace, then Grandma’s chair. Another quarter turn to the right and there was a huge window with the couch set under it, directly across from THE ORGAN. Papa had a sort of “learn to play book”. All the notes in it had name of the note written in it. There was little cardboard key guide that you set on the keys and you could follow along in the book. I loved to play Mary Had a Little Lamb, The Marine Corps Anthem, and Silent Night (even in the summer). Sometimes Papa would play Brahms Lullaby when we went to bed. (If I asked him.) I would play those three songs over and over and over again. I would play so long the organ would overheat. There would be a loud “POP!” and I would have to turn it off and wait for it to cool down before I could play again. I loved that organ.
