When I was about
25, and my son was 18
months old, Papa did die.
My mother went to New
York to help her brother.
Along with the organ,
my mother shipped
my grandmother’s
cookbooks, one table
clothe, her kitchen table
and chairs, her pots and
pans, my grandparents
bedroom set, the buffet
and lots of other little
things. And of course, the
photo album.
When the organ arrived
in California, it would
not play. I was never able
to fix it. Nevertheless, I
moved it, and everything
else from California to
Virginia, to Texas, to
South Carolina. I moved
it from post housing to
civilian housing. When
I separated from my first
husband, he safeguarded

house, he brought it to me.
When I remarried, my son
kept it for me. I planned
to give it (someday) to me
daughter Freya who had
inherited Papa’s family’s
talent for music.
Then, when Logan
moved out of his
apartment, it was time for
the organ to come home
again. I decided on its
rightful place and what
would have to be moved
from the house to fit it.
My husband came and
loaded it in the trailer
with the help of my
daughter’s boyfriend. It’s
very heavy. Off it went.
About an hour and
half later, Dear Husband
came back to Logan’s
apartment, which I was in
the process of cleaning.
He told me he needed to
talk to me outside. He
had a very strange look
on his face. He said, “The
organ fell off the trailer.”
I immediately started to
cry because no good news
is ours, and we should be
committed to ensuring its

all, the last time I checked,

for habitation!

told DH.
And I meant it. It is ok.
I’ll miss it sitting silently
in my house. I’ll miss
cleaning it every week.
I’ll miss the cats using
it as a hiding place.
(They climb inside the
opening for the big
pedal). I’ll still have the
memories. Eventually,
I will go in the storage
shed and sift through the
salvaged pieces. Maybe
I can use them to make
something.
One more thing. DH
has to tell Mom what
happened to her father’s
organ.
