Remembering Our Active Duty Soldiers
Michelle Jackson, Publisher/Editor
Memorial Day is observed
throughout the country to honor
those who served and died in the
military. But there’s a group of
people within our community who
also honor our soldiers on active
duty. Donna Royson, Linda Kay
Shealy and Joan Richardson are
three of the members of a quilt
club who participated in the HUGS
project: a nationwide project that
serves to send National Guard
members and active duty soldiers
in the Middle East comfort items-
namely neck coolers or neck ties.
Twice a year, this group of
women come together to form
an assembly line in the sewing of
BMS Students worked factory style to complete 238 Neck Coolers for
soldiers in Afghanistan. Pictured left to right: Emoni Connendor,
these neck coolers. “The coolers
are made with watersorb crystals,”
Royson said. “Once the ties are
soaked in cold water, the crystals
expand and become very cold. The
ties are then placed around the neck
to help keep the soldiers cool in the
heat of the day. They hold water for
hours and are reusable.”
Royson said that approximately
twenty volunteers showed up to
assist in the sewing of the neck
coolers this past April. “The fabric
and crystals were donated,” Royson
said. “And the owner of ‘The Quilted
Pearl’ on O’Neil Court donated the
Are you looking for something fun
to do this Memorial Day Weekend?
The Blythewood Cultural Arts
Association has partnered with local
resident, Jim Chappell, in hopes of
starting an annual event that will
be lots of fun while benefitting a
worthy cause: The American Cancer
Society.
Jim Chappell and a group of
friends got together in the early
60’s and formed a band called The
Sensational Epics. “We started as a
five piece band,” Chappell said. “We
were right out of high school, and
Jim Chappell, co-founder of the
Blythewood Beach Bash
our start was performing at fraternity
parties. From there, we added a horn
section and the band grew to an eight
piece band. We started performing
songs from bands like The Beatles,
and before long, we were the ‘backup’
band for groups such as The
Drifters, The Impressions and The
Tams.”
After college, the band dispersed
and began having families and living
everyday life. “About five years
ago,” Chappell said, “Hunter Herring
called us and wanted us to get back
together for a benefit in Five Points.
It was such a good cause, we agreed,
and the money raised went to the
Palmetto Place: a place for battered
and abused children. We performed
two shows and raised $13,000 for
the benefit. People wanted us to
start performing again. I didn’t join
in the re-enlistment of the band, but
the other band members began to
perform for benefits.
“Jimmy Anderson was a guitar
player with the band,” Chappell
continued. “He was diagnosed with
Cancer in 2006, and passed away
If you could spend the whole day with
someone (dead or alive) who would it be?
Chris Johnson
My Mom
Richard Morris
John F. Kennedy
I’ve Been Violated!
I have been violated!
I have been robbed by a no name, unseen criminal,
who took my money like a thief in the night.
A few weeks ago, it came to my attention that I had
a negative balance on my bank account. I was going
on a trip to the beach and thought I would take out
some money for the fun in the sun. I hit a brick wall
– no money – in fact I was in the hole.
It was impossible! Less than a week earlier, I had
several hundred dollars at my disposal and had been
frugal with doling it out.
I suppose the good thing about being poor is
that you keep track of every dime you pay out.
When someone else dips into the kitty, you notice
immediately.
I went to my local bank branch and asked them
what was going on with my account.
They printed out several sheets of paper and told
me to go through and mark the purchases that I did
not make. Most of it was gobbledigoop, but I did
notice several withdrawals that were just not right.
The lady who was helping me even called one of
the numbers on the sheet. She told me that it belonged
to some questionable entertainment company online.
Needless to say, I did not make the charge.
The lady suggested that I put my account on hold
until an investigation was conducted. Together, we
opened a new account, not that I had anything to put
in it anymore.
When everything got ironed out, I supposedly
received my money back. However, the bank
retrieved some of the money by charging me for
insufficient funds that had been chalked up during
that time period, which I thought was just another
rip-off, but anyway.
I heard about these things happening to other
people. Obtaining funds by fraudulent means is
nothing new, and of course, identity fraud is the
hottest criminal activity to master these days.
With the economy flailing around like a landed fish,
it does not surprise me that the cowardly criminals
have left mugging behind and have branched out to
embrace the technology age.
But where does this leave the victims, the account
holders and even the banks? I know it put me in
a financial bind, but the bank had to make good
on most of the losses. No wonder the financial
institutions are floundering, needing constant help
from the government; they are having to make good
the money stolen from nameless, faceless hackers.
Well, they don’t have to worry about me any more.
I no longer pay bills online or shop internet sites for
the best buy on items. I have gone back to mailing my
bills and shopping at stores, when I have the money.
Harold Branham
Michelle Jackson, Publisher/Editor
While out riding one day,
Harold Branham came upon
a scene that reminded him
of days gone by. Days of his
youth, days of a simpler way
of life. He snapped a photo
of the scene and decided to
paint it. It’s title: The Old
Neighborhood.
“Back in the 50’s,”
Branham said, “you could be
just as comfortable in another
neighborhood as in your own.
There was more trust then. You could go to bed with your
doors unlocked and your windows open. Television was
black and white, and consisted of only three channels. Kids
played outside. They rode their bikes to school, and gliding
through other neighborhoods was safe. Neighbors knew
each other, and looked out for each other. And as a kid, you
behaved because everyone knew your parents.
“Nowadays,” Branham continued, “doors are locked and
curtains are closed. When I was a kid, if I left school to go
somewhere, it was to the neighborhood store. Neighborhood
stores had the best candy. I remember sneaking away from
school to go across the street to the store for candy. My fear
of getting caught back then was that my parents would find
out. Nowadays, just going to school can be fearful. Deputies
patrol the high schools, and kids carry weapons. Life was a
lot simpler in the ‘50’s.
“When I came across this scene, it reminded me of a time
that was safe. A time that families really knew each other
and spent every Sunday together. Stores weren’t open on
Sunday, and families had nothing else to do but to spend time
with each other and enjoy each other’s company. Neighbors
would get together, and
neighbors cared about one
I’ve never been to Japan, never set foot
there, but my Dad went. Thus Japan has
touched me in ways obvious and ways
hard to explain. The obvious is easy. I
drive a Honda. I take digital photographs
with a Fuji S3000. Japan Victor Company
built my flatscreen. Sony manufactured
my home sound system. My Vortex
binoculars came from Japan. I talk on
Panasonic telephones.
The rest is less straightforward and
weightier. My Japanese musings took
over me the day I heard about Chrysler’s
bankruptcy. For me, Chrysler sits at
the intersection of two key memories,
memories of a boyhood discovery and
a 1956 Plymouth, turquoise and white,
with delicate fins. It’s the first car I
remember Dad buying, not that long
after World War II. Dad pretty much
bought Chrysler cars all his life.
We who buy Japanese cars drove a
few nails in Chrysler’s coffin, but don’t
blame us. Japanese cars last. They’ve
come to embody the phoenix-like rise
of a country leveled by war, demolished
by us in a way like no other but brought
back by us as well.
From a nuclear funeral pyre, Japan
rose to give us dependable cars, radios,
TVs, telephones, and more. Japan, the
vanquished enemy, conquered as no
country has ever been conquered, came
roaring back.
The other memory
goes way back as well.
Rambling through closets
as a boy I discovered
silk flags, relics of Dad’s
time in Japan. Unfolding
them, a rising sun with
spectacular rays burst
off the alabaster silk as if
afire. Japan—Land of the
Rising Sun.
The Imperial Japanese
Navy flew those flags as
did the Japanese Army.
In battle, those flags were
among the last sights many
warriors on both sides saw.
To me, they were playthings. I made
parachutes of those silk flags, tying a rock
to them, hurling them up, and watching
them drift lazily back to Georgia soil.
Somewhere in my boyhood those
flags disappeared. What a loss. I’d love
to have one framed with an inscription.
“Liberated and brought to the United
States by Sergeant John M. Poland Jr.”
With Japan’s surrender August 14, 1945,
Allied Occupation Forces banned the
Rising Sun flags. Maybe that’s how Dad
came by them. Confiscated.
Thus it began. Dad journeyed to
Japan on a troop carrier in Operation
Our Changing World
Touched by Hiroshima
Downfall, the Allied plan
to invade Japan. Along
the way the atom bomb
brought Japan to its
knees, and some 200,000
servicemen, would-be
invaders, occupied Japan
instead.
My thoughts drift to
Hiroshima. My father
served in U.S. Army
Ordnance and he spent
time in Yokohama but he
also went to Hiroshima
not long after the Enola
Gay dropped “Little
Boy.”
There in the land of
geishas and samurai, he might as well
have been walking on the surface of
the sun. He was at most, 19 or 20. The
things he must have seen as he tread
Hiroshima’s toxic soil. There was no way
he could avoid horrors. Skinless people.
Men with stripes burnt onto their skin.
They were wearing striped shirts when
the brilliant flash hit them, the nuclear
burst that stenciled dress patterns onto
women’s bodies. Dad never talked about
things like that, but they happened. That
and worse.
He returned to Georgia with evidence
of his Hiroshima days: the flags and
horrific photos. The photos, taken from a
low, wide perspective, reveal block after
block of charred rubble with I-beams
drooping like melted candles. The
next time you drive past a field of corn
chopped close to the ground, imagine it
burnt too. That’s what Hiroshima looked
like, a charred, leveled cornfield.
At ground zero the heat reached
millions of degrees. Some victims left
shadows etched into rock ... vaporized
... perhaps that’s why censors placed
rectangles black as midnight on some
of Dad’s photos. No need to generate
sympathy for the enemy. By the end of
1945, radiation and injuries, burns in
many cases, raised the total to 140,000
dead.
Even as a kid, those photos told me Hell
itself had been unleashed on Hiroshima.
It didn’t come as a surprise. Awaiting the
bomb’s first test, Robert Oppenheimer,
father of the atomic bomb, held onto a
post to steady himself as the seconds
ticked down ... “3, 2, 1, Now!” A brilliant
burst of light and a deep growling roar
staggered him. Apocalyptic words
escaped his lips: “I am become Death,
the destroyer of worlds” ... words from
the “Song of God,” a treasured Sanskrit
Hindu scripture. Worlds destroyed sixty-
All across the world
there are many amazing
cities that provide
people with experiences
that cannot be found
in any other place. In
Washington, DC that
experience mainly deals
with Smithsonian’s, and
seeing the government at
work first hand. In Miami,
There are many
beautiful places all across
the world that contributes
to an individual’s cultural
development and there is
one city that has affected
my sister and me greatly.
This amazing city is
Boston, Massachusetts.
Over the past four years I
have had the privilege of
visiting Boston several
times because my sister
was a student at Boston
University. Sadly, this
year was my sister’s last
year. This past weekend,
when I went to Boston
for her graduation, I
toured the city for what
will most likely be the
last time for several
years. During my trip I
enjoyed the finer parts
of Boston University
graduation festivities.
I enjoyed a boat cruise
on the Charles River,
a beautiful reception
where I met all of my
sister’s lovely friends,
and an awards ceremony
where my sister was one
of the select few honored
with the highest award
that Boston University
Communications schools
gives.
She was entitled to
this award because
over the past four years
she has grown and
developed extensively
on a professional and
personal level- thanks
to loving friends,
amazing professors,
and opportunities and
experiences that only
Boston could provide.
Boston has been the
best of both worlds
for my sister. These
amazing professional
opportunities vary
from interning in
congressional offices
and televisions stations
to enjoying a lovely
dinner with friends,
professors and future
employers. Boston has
also provided her with
amazing personal growth
opportunities because of
her love of history and
culture.
Boston is the only
place in the world where
you can do things like
tour Paul Revere’s home
and go to the North End
to enjoy authentic Italian
food and Mike’s pastries,
(which always has a line
out the door). Boston is
the only place in the world
where you can go on the
freedom trial to see the
U.S.S. Constitution, the
graveyard where several
important historical
figures are buried, Old
North Church, which is
where On the evening of
April 18, 1775, Robert
Newman climbed the
steeple and held high
two lanterns as a signal
from Paul Revere
that the British were
marching to Lexington
and Concord. Only in
Boston can one see the
actual place where our
forefather’s poured the
tea in the harbor. Boston
is a place filled with
opportunities, culture,
and a history of our
nation that should never
be forgotten.
Thanks to this great city
and Boston University, I
feel as if my sister has
learned and grown in a
way I never imagined
in 2007. I remember one
time I went to visit him in
the hospital and he was so
distraught, he had given up.
I tried to cheer him up, but it
didn’t seem to be working.
So on my way home I was
listening to the radio, and a
song by Bo Diddley came
on. I called Jimmy’s hospital
room, put the phone to
the radio, and told him he
couldn’t be sad listening to
Bo Diddley. It cheered him
up for a little while. When
Jimmy passed, the members
of the band were his
to do something in his
It became a realization to me
someone that died from
Now, life has become too
four years ago.
Now and then in pensive moods,
waiting for a traffic light to change, I
think about the Hondas, Nissans, and
Toyotas around me. These cars plunged
a dagger into Chrysler’s heart, killing
off my Dad’s favored brand. I know that
many of those cars are now made in the
United States. I know, too, that many
are not. I wonder about the Japanese
autoworkers who built them and what
life was like for their parents. Surely
some had okasans (moms) and otousans
(dads) who experienced atomic warfare
like no one ever has.
The bombs saved lives in the long run,
they say, and I believe that. Still, the
hidden choice facing some U.S. soldiers
was to die in an invasion or die down the
road from radiation’s long-term effects.
They had no choice, really, and the long
run continues to lose value as it reaches
out and kills people still.
For the Japanese, I try to absorb the
annihilation. A flash of light, fire and
wind blast and fire again, a towering
mushroom cloud, black rain, people with
their arm skin and fingernails sliding onto
the ground, silhouettes of people burned
into granite. How did the survivors pick
up and carry on with their world changed
forever. After loved ones simply vanish
without a trace. How?
For the U.S. servicemen, it must have
been Hell and Heaven intertwined.
The end of war at last, but a headful
of horrors to go home with. Burdened
U.S. servicemen performed their duty,
crossed the Pacific again, and returned
home to begin life anew. Memories of
Hiroshima had to haunt them. How could
it not. Appreciating life like few of us
ever will, these veterans, these Atomic
Veterans, came home to do good. Many
started families. Many bought American
cars. Some bought two-tone Plymouths.
Some returned with keepsakes of where
they had been, flags, photographs, and
things they didn’t talk about. Touched
by Hiroshima, some returned with things
they didn’t know they had.
It took “Little Boy” 57 seconds to fall
over Hiroshima, and for some American
soldiers, the damage took 57 years to
reveal itself. Damage that made dying
American GIs victims, too, of World War
II ... the long run turned upside down.
The Japanese committed atrocities but
I don’t recall dad ever saying he hated the
Japanese. Not once. During the ’70s, he
sold Hodaka motorcycles and dirt bikes.
He always owned Chrysler products,
but near the end of his life, he bought a
pickup made by Mazda, a company that
got its start in Hiroshima. In a way, he
had come full circle.
Edward Jones: Chris Jewett
Are you looking for someone to
assist you in your investments or
retirement plans? Chris Jewett of
Edward Jones in Blythewood may be
the person you’re looking for.
Until recently, Jewett didn’t really
have a place he could call home.
Growing up in a military family, his
family relocated quite often. “I guess
the closest thing to what you could
call home was when we lived in
Arizona,” he said. “I graduated high
school there, and attended Northern
Arizona University.”
After receiving his Bachelor of Arts
Degree in History, Jewett joined the
Air Force. “I was commissioned as
an officer and flew C130’s for eight
years as a pilot in the service.” After
leaving the military, Jewett pursued
his MBA from the New York Institute
of Technology. “That’s when I really
became interested in investments,” he
said. “I began working with finance
the kitchen. I cherish
those moments-moments
that may seem little, but
Some of my favorite
the sweet smell of my
Mom, a smile from my
Husband, kind words
from my sister, and my
As the hissing sound
