Harold Branham
Michelle Jackson, Publisher/Editor
While out riding one day,
Harold Branham came upon
a scene that reminded him
of days gone by. Days of his
youth, days of a simpler way
of life. He snapped a photo
of the scene and decided to
paint it. It’s title: The Old
Neighborhood.
“Back in the 50’s,”
Branham said, “you could be
just as comfortable in another
neighborhood as in your own.
There was more trust then. You could go to bed with your
doors unlocked and your windows open. Television was
black and white, and consisted of only three channels. Kids
played outside. They rode their bikes to school, and gliding
through other neighborhoods was safe. Neighbors knew
each other, and looked out for each other. And as a kid, you
behaved because everyone knew your parents.
“Nowadays,” Branham continued, “doors are locked and
curtains are closed. When I was a kid, if I left school to go
somewhere, it was to the neighborhood store. Neighborhood
stores had the best candy. I remember sneaking away from
school to go across the street to the store for candy. My fear
of getting caught back then was that my parents would find
out. Nowadays, just going to school can be fearful. Deputies
patrol the high schools, and kids carry weapons. Life was a
lot simpler in the ‘50’s.
“When I came across this scene, it reminded me of a time
that was safe. A time that families really knew each other
and spent every Sunday together. Stores weren’t open on
Sunday, and families had nothing else to do but to spend time
with each other and enjoy each other’s company. Neighbors
would get together, and
neighbors cared about one
