The Gift of Love: Becoming a Foster Parent
Michelle Jackson
Publisher/Editor
So many children throughout
South Carolina have experienced
or are experiencing neglect
or abuse in their family. Many
of these children hardly ever
experience what it is like to
live in a “normal” household.
But foster parents know all
too well the circumstances
of these children, and in the
Brown’s case, have opened their
hearts and home to allow these
children to experience love and
compassion.
Carl and Mary Brown have
been foster parents to over one
hundred and thirty children.
Of those children, the Brown’s
(biological parents of three
children), have adopted six
children for a total of nine
children.
“Our own children have been
very unselfish,” said Mary. “They
have welcomed the children into
our home, and tried to make
them feel as comfortable as
possible. I remember one time,
we had a child that was having
trouble with one of his teeth. He
had cleft palate, which caused
one of his teeth not to come in.
Our three girls prayed that he’d
get his tooth, and one night when
they were playing, they saw it
coming in. They were all excited
about it.”
There are several simple steps
Mary and Carl Brown (center) have three biological children, and six adopted children. They have been
foster parents for over 130 children. (Left) is their son, Mackenzie, and (right) is their daughter Kelsey.
to become a foster parent. The
first step is contacting the local
Department of Social Services.
Then you have to complete
fourteen hours of training
through the Department of
Social Services, an application
and two home visits with a
family assessment specialist.
Of course you have to undergo
a criminal background check,
fingerprints and a check of
Central Registry of Abuse and
Neglect. You also have to fill
out a “child factors checklist”
to determine characteristics the
family is willing to accept (ie-
disabilities, behaviors and other
issues concerning the child and
their biological parents).
“You aren’t allowed to have
more than five children in your
home at one time,” said Carl.
“Your home is inspected by a
Fire Marshall and the health
department to determine the
safety of the home and the
adequacy of sleeping quarters.
Each child must have their own
bed. Of course children can
share rooms, but there must me
adequate beds for each child.
“The ultimate goal is to
reunite these children with
their biological parents,” Carl
contined. “Some children have to
be separated from their siblings.
The older children seem to have
more difficulty adjusting. But
Mary and I have often been
mentors to the biological parents
of our foster children, guiding
them into good parenting roles.
Several times, we’ve been
ordered by the court to be a
mentor.”
Being a foster parent also
means eventually having to give
the children back to their parents.
I’ve heard it said that bad luck
comes in pairs of three. Now I’m not
the type that takes too much stock in
superstition (except for not washing
clothes on New Year’s- hey I’ll gladly
take a day off from that!), but after
some recent events in our family, I’m
inclined to believe that maybe bad luck
does come in three’s.
A couple of months ago, my husband
was turning his truck around in the
yard, and totally forgot about our water
well. It’s only been there for fourteen
years, but evidently his mind was on
something else. He ran completely
over it. After running to turn off the
water (right when I was in the middle of using it),
he evaluated the situation and realized it was tore all
to pieces. The green box that covered the well was
shattered into pieces, and the pipe going down to the
pump was slung all over the yard. Our repairman came
out that evening and restored our water, but the pipe
leading the pump into the well is wedged now. If the
pump ever goes out, we’ll have to dig a new well.
As if that wasn’t enough, a couple of weeks ago,
my husband was making his rounds in Blythewood,
Ridgeway and Winnsboro delivering The Blythewood
Leader. He called me around noon to tell me he had
been in an accident. At first I didn’t believe him; he
plays practical jokes on me all the time. But when he
told me he hurt his shoulder, I asked him where he
was at. It seems a Port-A-Pottie truck was in front of
him on Highway 21. He thought they were taking a
right on Smallwood because their blinker was on. But
rather than stopping behind them, he tried to go around
them-only to discover they were taking
a left. Seems that the blinker wasn’t
on- it was their flashers and the left
one was out. I was so thankful to find
out that when my husband smashed
into the port-a-pottie truck, he didn’t
bust the tank. “You would’ve had to
find another ride,” I said. “There is no
way you were getting in my car had the
tank busted.” Even the wrecker service
asked about the tank. When they
arrived, the driver said he specifically
asked the dispatcher if the tank busted.
“I was going to send someone else if it
Michelle Jackson
did,” he said.
Publisher/Editor
Evidently, my husband has something
against plumbing. First the well, then the septic truck.
I think I’ll keep him away from the kitchen sink.
Last, but not least, I was driving down the road the
other day, and a large dump truck passed me in the
opposite direction. I heard a loud “thump” on my
windshield. Now we all have those trucks that pass us
and throw rocks on our windshield. But as for me- my
windshield now has a large round crack in it. But hey,
at least I didn’t run over the well or into a port-a-pottie
truck. I don’t think my husband will ever hear the end
of it from me or our children. It’s our turn to give him
a hard time.
As for superstition, I may be forced to re-think some
things now. Maybe bad luck does come in three’s. But
in all seriousness, I guess I have to look at the bright
side. No one was seriously hurt or killed in all three
accidents, and my husband doesn’t have to shower
three times a day like he would have if the tank had
busted.
We Are Not An Island
I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-
N-C-E. What a concept.
Independence is defined
as a “self-reliant person”
or one who is “dependent
from others.”
Can anyone truly live
without dependence on
something or someone
else? We are dependent
on the sun for energy and
sustenance. Likewise,
we are dependent on the
trees for oxygen as well
as plants and animals for
food.
But what about people? Can
we remain independent of human
assistance? Can we exist apart from
human affections? I don’t believe that
we can live a healthy, balanced life
independent from human relationships.
Poet John Donne once wrote, “No man
is an island, entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the
main.” We truly need one another!
For instance, think about a baby. The
child is dependent on its guardians for
love, food, to change its dirty diaper,
for warmth, and so on. Dependence on
others is taught to us all at an early
age. Therefore, what changes when
we reach adulthood?
It is my belief that we encounter
problems with people that we trust. We
say things, mean things, which push
us away from relationships. And then
we learn a new behavior contrary to
that which we learned as
a kid. We trust no more.
We isolate our hearts.
My friends, this is not
healthy thinking.
The fact of the matter
is that we all need
to remain open and
vulnerable, regardless
of past guilt or hurt. In
spite of the fact that our
feelings may once again
be crushed, we must not
Chip Banks isolate ourselves, or our
Columnist hearts, from the rest of
humanity.
We must remember that everyone
is different. And we need to be
surrounded by the “right” kind of
people.
Left alone, an infant will surely die.
So will we, if isolated from the world.
The infant’s death will be physical.
An adults death will be mental,
psychological, emotional, and then if
left unattended, perhaps physical.
But we do not need to fear…for
there is still hope. As long as you have
breath in your body, someone will be
there to listen. People still care about
you. A continent does still remain
available for your citizenship. All you
must do is find it.
So wherever you find yourself
today, whatever hurts, habits, or hangups
you possess, believe me when I
She grew up in a small village in the Valais Canton, learning
needle work at her mother’s knee and as part of traditional
Swiss education, much like the once obligatory home economics
of the American education system. In 1980, while working
in Geneva, she met visiting American professor David Fox,
whom she married and accompanied to Minnesota. She and
David bought the Dr. McCants’ house on Bratton Street and
moved to Winnsboro in the 1990s. Mr. Fox was lost in a tragic
accident a short time ago; however, Mrs. Fox continues to be a
Killian Elementary Students
Learn Math in a Fun Way
Ready, set, go! Students in Julie Sheehan and Richard
Handy’s math class at Killian Elementary launched airplanes
as part of their standard and metric measurement study. Prior
to the airplane activity students used standard and non standard
units to measure various objects in the classroom. Practice was
given using rulers and tape measures. The class discussed jobs
and careers which would benefit from knowing how to measure
objects. Instruction during this lesson was differentiated for
these 2-5 grade students as they launched their airplanes down
the halls of Killian Elementary and measured to the standard
and metric lengths as determined by their readiness and grade
level standards. The longest flight recorded was 26 feet and ¾
inches by Lewis Mathis in the third grade. Students exhibited
success when measuring flights in a fun and relevant way.
Sponsorships Needed for Two Ridgeview Teachers Traveling to Uganda
Ridge View High School teachers, Lisa Ellis and
Nicole Walker, will be two of 37 American teachers
working with the Invisible Children Teacher Exchange
in Gulu, Uganda June 15-July 27.
Invisible Children is a non-profit organization
that was created in 2003 after three young men from
California accidentally stumbled upon the horrific
tragedy occurring in Uganda, a small country in the
middle of Africa. Uganda has been engaged in a civil
war for the last 23 years making it the longest running
war in Africa. The Ugandan government has been
fighting the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army), a rebel
fighting group. Over the last two decades, millions of
families have been involuntarily displaced from their
homes and thousands of children have been kidnapped
and forced to become child soldiers.
Invisible Children, Inc. focuses on long-term goals
that enable children to take responsibility for their
future and the future of their country through programs
that address the following areas: quality education,
mentorships, redevelopment of schools, resettlement
from the camps, and financial stability. One of its
programs is a Teacher Exchange, where teachers from
the United States travel to Uganda to work with a
particular school and teacher for six weeks. The goal of
this program is to enhance present educational models
and to establish long-term learning opportunities for
Our Changing World
Fear of the Unknown
It’s one of those words
writers avoid. It is difficult
to spell. It’s Latin, and it has
“phobia” attached to it, never
a good thing. “Xenophobia.”
Do you have an irrational
fear of foreigners? Do you
dislike their customs and
culture? Let’s hope not.
Neither do I, but for a long
time I sensed foreigners
were different in ways that
mattered, in ways I could not
comprehend. You could say
my eyes were closed.
Growing up in the rural
South provided no opportunity
to meet people from other
countries. I wasn’t sure what
to expect should I meet a
I didn’t even know if I would
meet a foreigner. I was young
and naive. You could say my
eyes needed opening.
I didn’t serve in the
military and go abroad. Two
years’ Air Force ROTC at the
University of Georgia was
as close as I got to military
service. But it was at Georgia
that I began to see people
from Asia, Europe, and other
continents. Like ships in the
night, we passed each other
silently.
It wasn’t until I began
teaching at the college level
that I began to interact with
people from other countries.
I remember the first foreign
student I taught, Setsue
Hayashi, a petite Japanese
girl, polite to the max, and
a bright student. As I taught
her, I recalled images from
my dad’s photo album of
Hiroshima, rubble as far
as the eye can see, I-beams
drooping like melted candles.
The vanquished enemy. Yet,
here was a woman from
Japan. She was sweet, polite,
and attractive. There was
nothing to fear.
My first trip to Europe
opened my eyes a great deal.
I spent two weeks in Bavaria,
stayed in a home overlooking
the Danube, and ate side
by side with Germans at
restaurants, festivals, and
their home. I remember
the beautiful Bavarian
countryside, white church
steeples rising
from dark
green forests,
and I remember
driving past
the huge BMW
plant off the
a u t o b a h n
o u t s i d e
Munich. I
owned a car
made there
once. Germany,
I thought,
is not that
different from
back home.
A few years
ago, I met Paolo
Bazzoni, an entertaining
character from Milan, Italy.
We discovered we had a lot in
common and became friends.
Together, we’d go out on the
town. Paolo is cosmopolitan,
being from Milan and having
lived in England, Argentina,
the USA, and now China. We
stay in touch even though he
lives in Beijing, where he is
the chief financial officer for
a corporation.
Back in 2001, I spent two
weeks in Europe. I traveled
through Paris, Madrid,
Valencia, Alicante, Rome, and
Venice. I ate paella in a home
in Valencia and traveled by
train through Spain and Italy
as silver olive groves passed
my window. I saw castles
in brown,
dry Spain,
became friends
with a young
woman from
Copenhagen
when we
missed a flight
in Paris, and
stood among
people from
the world over
while touring
the Vatican and
the Coliseum.
But that’s
not my chief
memory of
that trip.
This is. It’s a bit early
in the afternoon, around 2
p.m. I’m leaning against
the corner of a building in
Valencia. The sun is warm
against my face and to my
right the Mediterranean Sea
sparkles. Palms move lazily
with the breeze. It’s serene.
Suddenly, to my left, I see a
man headed directly for me.
On he comes, striding with
purpose, making me edgy.
As he approaches, he slows,
becomes cautious, and then
within two feet of me he
stops and studies me. What
now? With halting words,
being as clear as he can, he
says “Do ... you ... speak ...
English?
“Sure, pal. I’m an
American.
“Thank God,” he says,
“Where is the train station?”
“The train station,” I say,
“is 300 yards in the direction
from where you came.” Off
he trots toward the station.
So there we were. Two
Americans unsure of one
another, each thinking the
other was a foreigner.
I know people from other
countries, but I focused on
Japan, Germany, and Italy
for a reason. Those three
countries formed the Axis,
the triumvirate we fought in
World War II. They were the
enemy. Kill or be killed back
in the day. My friend, Paolo,
owns a vacation home in
Tuscany. I’m free to go there
whenever I want. Things
change don’t they.
In my youth, images of how
people from other countries
were different swirled
through my mind. It all came
to naught. Sure, we have
different customs, different
cuisines, and different
beliefs, but when you get
right down to the brass tacks,
people are people.
Rosa’s Hair Salon
Born and raised
in Winnsboro, Rosa
Wittmeyer is no stranger to
the community. As owner
of Rosa’s Hair Salon in
Ridgeway, many of you
already know her talents.
“After I graduated from
Winnsboro High School,”
Rosa said, “I attended
Roanne Technical College
in Salisbury, North Carolina.
It was there I gained my instructor’s license.”
Rosa moved to Florida for a while and worked on a
platform, which is where people from all over the United
States compete. “It was a fast pace environment,” she said.
She spent twenty five years in Florida before moving back.
After Rosa’s husband passed away, she decided to move
back home. She worked a little over three years with her sisters,
who are also hair stylists. Then she came to Blythewood and
worked five years at Special Effects.
“I decided I wanted to start my own business,” Rosa
said. “So in May of 2005, I opened Rosa’s Hair Salon in
Ridgeway. I am very much a ‘hands-on’ hairdresser. I like to
meet with my clients one on one to be able to determine their
needs and wants. I offer free consultations and encourage
people to bring pictures and show me the style they want. I
recently acquired a new client, Rachel, whose profession is
a model. She came to me with long hair, and I gave here a
modified bob cut. Since then, she’s been offered several jobs.
Now she comes to me all the time- even though she lives in
Columbia.”
Rosa also specializes in hair color. “My formulas for color
are different,” she said. “I mix my own color. That’s why I
completed two years of college. I wanted to learn chemistry
and anatomy so I could know what will work best for my
clients.”
Rosa has three children: Sammy, Tammy and Jamie, ten
grandchildren and one great grandchild. “Although I’ve been
a hairstylist for quite some time, I still know the latest styles,”
she said.
Rosa’s grandson plays baseball in Blythewood, and she
sponsors the Blythewood Baseball teams. “I also support
cancer victims,” Rosa said. “My family has a long history
of cancer, and I understand first hand what the patients and
families go through.”
Rosa is also a Beauty Control Consultant. “There are three
lines of skincare,” she said, “one for twenty and up, one for
thirty and up and one for forty and up.”
Rosa’s Hair Salon is located a few doors down from Town
Hall in Ridgeway at 180 South Dogwood. The shop is open
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturday mornings.
“I try to reserve Saturdays for my ladies that work late during
the week,” she said. “But walk-ins are always welcome. Gift
certificates are available. With Valentine’s Day just around
the corner, men often like to give their significant other
something to pamper themselves with.”
As the automobile progressed,
so did the aggravation
of trying to work on
one. For folks like myself,
trying to fix a broken car
was not only an impossibility,
but pure destruction.
Hence, the independent
mechanic became a great
necessity, and an honest
one was a blessing to find.
As technology and computers
have taken their toll,
it is the independent mechanic
that has become a
rare breed; and many doors
have closed.
College is supposed to
be a time full of fun and
excitement. You expect
your time in college to be
the best time of your life.
But on Friday January
23, 2009 this utopian
image was destroyed
for George Washington
students by the tragic
death of one of my
nineteen-year-old sorority
sisters. She was found
unconscious at 8:30 AM
by one of her roommates
and pronounced dead at
10:00 AM by medical
examiners. The cause
of her death is still
unknown, but it believed
that she died of natural
causes. She was a
sophomore at George
Washington, majoring
in journalism. She also
served as the contributing
editor for the life section
of the GW Hatchet and
was a member of Phi
Sigma Sigma sorority.
Her participation in
the sorority is how I
became friends with her.
She was by far one the
kindest and most sincere
people I have ever had
the pleasure of knowing.
She had a way of always
brightening a room and
bringing a smile to my
face. Her sudden and
tragic death caused me to
reflect on how different
my life would have been
had we never met. Had
I never met her, I may
have never joined Phi
Sigma Sigma and become
friends with girls that I
now could never imagine
my life without. She was
one of the main reasons
I joined this particular
sorority. When I met her
Cherish Every Breathing Moment
Madison Cooke
Columnist
during recruitment, I
instantly admired her and
looked up to her as the
type of fun, energetic and
sweet person I wanted
to be friends with. I am
proud to be a Phi Sigma
Sigma and I am honored
to have had the privilege
to call this girl my sister.
She was an amazing girl
with amazing dreams,
and what saddens me
the most about her tragic
death is that she did not
have the chance to show
the rest of the world how
amazing she truly was.
It is still hard to
comprehend that the girl
I smiled with in countless
amounts of pictures will
not be taking pictures
with me anymore. It is
hard to comprehend that
ten years from now, I will
not be reading my favorite
writer’s columns out of
my favorite newspaper
or receiving pictures
from one of her various
exciting endeavors.
Her death has caused
me to realize more than
the ever the importance of
seizing the moment and
living life to the fullest.
No one ever knows when
their last moment on earth
will be, and I just hope
that I will live my life the
same way my friend did:
enjoying every moment.
Two years ago, I
suffered a similar personal
tragedy in my life and
a wonderful woman
said something to me
that I will never forget.
She told me that, “God
only picks the loveliest
flowers for his garden.”
My sorority friend will
surely be the loveliest
American beauty rose of
them all. In the brief time
I knew her, she became
an inspiration to me, and I
hope that you will be able
to take something from
this as well. Seize the
day, enjoy every moment
and cherish the ones you
love- because you never
know when God may pick
them for his garden.
Contributing Writer
So often in today’s day
and time, people aren’t
appreciated enough for the
things they do for others.
But this community has a
way of pulling together to
help those in time of need.
A labor of pure love has
been the story of Becky
Thompson’s adult life.
When her sister was killed
in a shooting accident,
Becky and her husband, JC
Thompson, took in all of
five children that were left
behind.
“After the children were
raised, I was called home to
take care of my father,” said
Becky. “Then another sister
was stricken with cancer
and I became her caregiver;
cancer eventually took her
life. Another sister also was
diagnosed with cancer and I
then became her caregiver.”
After her sister’s death,
Becky returned home to
care for her father until his
passing. She then became
her mother’s caregiver,
staying by her side until the
end. Becky had given up her
home as it was necessary to
live with her parents in order
to take care of them. She
Becky struggled to keep up
her home and lawn. After
a leak under her home
caused damage to her floors
and foundation, family
and friends came to her
rescue and reinforced her
foundation, made repairs
to the floor and built new
cabinets in the kitchen.
It became known to others
that she needed help tearing
down some old sheds in the
yard, and with an outpouring
of love for this caring lady
and her husband, friends and
neighbors helped demolish
the old buildings and hauled
away debris and items that
were to be discarded. Bryan
Branham allowed them
to use his dump truck to
haul away everything, and
Bill Trapp allowed Kenny
Mattox to use his backhoe.
The only way she knew
how to thank these generous
people for the wonderful and
unselfish things they did was
to serve them a homemade
soup lunch. They all gathered
around a table outside and
enjoyed the wonderful meal
and each others company.
It was truly a day of labor
of love, and a testimony to
What’s the Worst That Could Happen?
Sometimes life is about risks.
in some of the toughest situations in
Sometimes you just have to put
thirty years or more. Every generation
yourself out there and hope for the
best.
scarce. My advice is to take note of
The past five years of my life
what you know. Look and your past
presented lessons that steadied me for
and see how you survived those tough
“real life.” Attending a small college
times and lived up until now. We as
personal risks again.
I took my own personal risk a month
before I finished my undergraduate
for me, there was no bubble. Towards
career. Everyone around me knew I
the close of a promising freshman Peter Harris was going to law school. With my
season of collegiate tennis, a pain Columnist brother succeeding as an attorney in
that I verbalized as minimal ended up
Atlanta, and the fact that I told my
changing the rest of my life. The pain defeated those around me I was planning on attending law
middle of a match, I “waddled” off the court as such a future. It was time for another risk. I
best I could. Little did I know, it would be two instead decided to come to Columbia and start my
team’s practice I could, I saw a teammate die right a semester and in order to play again my senior
next to me while running warm-up laps – dead year, I had to deal with consistent and frustrating
before he even hit the ground due to a massive failure. While advancing my career and deciding
heart attack.
which MBA route is best, from experience, I know
Through it all my life mentality changed forever. I might fail; however, giving up and giving in are
I had to motivate myself in new ways. I had to take not options for me anymore. I believe C.S. Lewis
risks that I never thought I would before. While I said it best, “failures are finger posts on the road
once lived a life of laid out plans, I started to live a to achievement.” Think about it. What’s the worst
life one day at a time. I took risks saying “what’s that could happen?
the worst that could happen?” My generation is Email responses or feedback at cephas04@
From Page 1
“It’s hard sometimes,”
Mary said. “They become
part of our family, and it
is easy to get attached to
them. I guess that is why
we have adopted six of
our foster children. We
wanted them to have a
good home, and to extend
our love to them.”
Being a foster parent
requires you to be
licensed every two years.
“You have to have twenty
eight hours of training
within that two years,”
Carl said. “But you can
receive training all over
the state through different
organizations, including
foster parent association
meetings, churches and
schools. You are also
allowed eight hours of
training online.”
Kelsey and Mackenzie
are the only two of the
Brown’s nine children
still at home. “We get
attached to these children
as well,” said Kelsey,
the Brown’s fifteen year
old daughter. “We have
a three year old with us
now, and I have already
taken to her as a sister. I
just want these children
to have a nice home.”
Mackenzie, twelve
years old, also feels the
same way. “I have seen
what it is like to be a
foster parent, and I know
that my parents really
care about children,” he
said.
Being a foster parent
doesn’t mean you have to
be married. Many single
people have become
foster parents.
“I personally encourage
people to become foster
parents,” said Mary. “I
like to see others open
their home and hearts
to the many children
who are neglected or
abused.”
Although parting with
these children is very
difficult, Carl said that
it is still worth the time
spent with these children.
“It’s very rewarding to
have met the needs of
these children when they
were in time of need. One
of the sayings for foster
parents is ‘What Matters:
One hundred years from
now, it will not matter
what kind of car I drove,
what kind of house I
lived in, how much I had
in my bank account nor
what my clothes looked
like. But the world may
be a little better because
I was important in the
life of a child.’ That is
what we are trying to
do. If we can make the
difference in a child’s
life by offering them a
loving home, then we
have accomplished our
goal.”
If you would be
interested in becoming a
foster parent and offering
children a stable, secure
home, please call the
