• Blythewood Youth Organization is seeking Coaches,
Athletes, Support Staff, and Sponsorships for the
upcoming 2009 Spring and Summer Competition
Basketball season. We are a Non-Profit organization
dedicated to the development of Boys and Girls ages
9-15 . We will travel locally and regionally to compete
in AAU, USBA, USSA, and YBOA tournaments. Team
tryouts will be announced at a later time for the end of

The Fairfield County Museum will present an exhibition of
the needle and handwork of Winnsboro resident Lily Fox February
7 – June 7, 2009 at the Fairfield County Museum, 231
South Congress Street, Winnsboro, SC.
Mrs. Fox is a native of Switzerland now living in Winnsboro.
She grew up in a small village in the Valais Canton, learning
needle work at her mother’s knee and as part of traditional
Swiss education, much like the once obligatory home economics
of the American education system. In 1980, while working
in Geneva, she met visiting American professor David Fox,
whom she married and accompanied to Minnesota. She and
David bought the Dr. McCants’ house on Bratton Street and
moved to Winnsboro in the 1990s. Mr. Fox was lost in a tragic
accident a short time ago; however, Mrs. Fox continues to be a
vibrant and contributing member of the Fairfield County community.

Fairfield county resident Joan Conrad grew up in a household
where music and handiwork was encouraged. Her family gathered
once a week at her grandmother’s home to work on quilts
and other needle work projects. She learned very early on a
child’s sewing machine how to make her own clothes.
All classes held at the Museum, 231 Congress Street, Winnsboro,
SC. The cost for a four-week class of either craft will
cost $50 plus the cost of materials. Call Betty Harden at 635-

become a better reader? The REACH (Readers
Enthusiastic About Climbing Higher) Program at
Killian Elementary needs volunteers at the following
times: Tuesdays 9:10-9:40, Wednesdays 9:50-10:20,

• The 2009 Northeast Richland Relay For Life will
be held at Blythewood High School on Friday, May
29 to Saturday May 30, 2009, from 6pm to 6am. We
are looking for survivors, caregivers, and teams. Last
year the event was a huge success. Adults and students
alike enjoyed this event and their participation was
phenomenal. Your team can be comprised of all adults or
students with you as the sponsor, church, or civic teams.

• The Lewy Body Dementia Association announces the
formation of the Midlands Area Lewy Body Dementia
Support Group for family members and caregivers who
have a loved one with Lewy Body Dementias (LBDs.)
The Midlands Area Lewy Body Dementia Support Group
will meet on the 2nd Monday of each month from 6:30
pm to 7:30 pm. Meetings will be held at The Haven in the

• Lexington County Master Gardener Volunteers are
celebrating Spring 2009 with a Garden Tour of seven
gardens as well as a tour of Carolina Daylilies. The Garden
Tour will be May 29 from 1-6pm, May 30 from 8am-3pm,
and May 31 from 1-5pm. Ticket orders postmarked before
May 1 will be $18 each, groups of 10 or more are $15 each.
After May 1, tickets are $20 each and may be purchased at
any of the gardens. To order tickets by mail, send your name,

• The National Alliance on Mental Illness of the
Midlands (Mid-Carolina NAMI) is offering the
Family- to- Family national education program
free to family and caregivers of individuals with
severe mental illness. The free 12-week course
begins February 9, 2009 at the DORN VA Medical
Center. It is completely private and confidential.
The course is taught by trained family members
and all instruction and course material are free
to class participants. Participants will learn of
current information about severe and persistent
mental illnesses, addictive disorders, and up-todate
information about medications and research.
They will also gain empathy by understanding the
subject, lived experiences of a person with a mental
illness. Special workshops will assist participants
with problem solving, listening and communication
techniques. They will also be given strategies for
handling crises and relapse, while learning how to
cope with the worry, stress and emotional overload
of being a caregiver. Over 115,000 family members
