The Dangers Lurking Outdoors
Summer time is approaching, and needless
to say, many of you will be out in the yards.
But there’s a danger out there; a danger that
you might not even see. Deer ticks. In the
January 15 issue of The Blythewood Leader,
there was an article about Dr. James Finkel
and how he contracted Lyme disease. He was
bitten by a deer tick in Charleston.
Hearld Lakes was a resident of Blythewood
for twenty one years. He currently lives in
Columbia, but before moving, Lake was
bitten by a deer tick.
“My wife and I moved to Blythewood in
1985 to a wooded three acre lot,” Lakes said.
“We received several tick bites while working
in our back yard, but never thought too much
about it. In August of 2005, I discovered a
red circle on my leg with a deeply burrowed,
small, hard, brown spot in the center. (The
deer tick that carries Lyme disease can be as
small as a poppy seed). The rash expanded
in diameter, and I began to feel like I had the

After a trip to the doctor, Lakes was treated
with antibiotics for seven days. “The red rash
went away, and I began to feel well again,”
he said.

By 2006, Lakes (still not correctly
diagnosed) developed a bacterial infection
with fever, loss of balance and ringing in his
ears. After seeing an ENT doctor, he was
once again put on antibiotics as well as thirty
days of balance therapy, which temporarily
relieved the problems. But by 2007, he
started having pain in his upper right side
and back, and could no longer walk his usual
daily three miles. He was sent for more tests:
a colonoscopy, endoscope and an ultrasound
for gall stones. All tests were normal. “I
continued to be more fatigued with right leg
numbness,” he said. “I could only walk short
distances before having to stop and rest.
Traditionally, my entire family goes on a
beach trip each summer. But in 2007, it was
a struggle for me to walk on the beach, and I
spent most of my time lying down.”

Taking On Life’s Challenges
It is amazing to see how people
who are faced with challenges take
them on head first.
Susan Harkey lives in Elgin now,
but grew up in Columbia. Her dad
was a principal in Richland County,
and being part of the educational
world was a way of life for her.
But Susan didn’t pursue a career
in education- or maybe she did,
so to speak. When she was only
ten years old, she painted her first
picture. “I loved painting as a kid,”
she said. “But back then, I never
thought of it as a career.”
After high school, Susan went
to work in a frame shop. “I knew
several art gallery owners,” she
said, “and I’d look at some of the
prints we framed and thought to
myself ‘I can do this.’ So I started
painting.”
To date, Susan has painted one
hundred twenty editions (1000
in each edition). “I mostly paint
historical scenes,” she said. “I was
commissioned by the State and
Capital City Publishing to paint
Fort Moultrie.” Susan was also
the first person to paint the CSS
Hunley accurately and sold all 250
copies. Some of her other historical

I have to eat, sleep, drink,
and even walk a certain
way and, you guessed it,

I have to commit to doing
those tasks correctly. But
as tough as those additional
tasks become, it is not the
toughest variable. For
years I committed myself
to several teams. My
ultimate team commitment
went to my college tennis
team; and while tennis
may have all the symptoms
of an individual sport, take
it from me, there is no
way possible I could have
achieved anything without
my team. This marathon is
a new battle. I have to sign
myself up for races. They
are small races at first,
with several 5ks and 10ks
just to get used to a new
competitive atmosphere.
No one wants to eat
with the same habits I
have right now. When
my friends want to “grab
some drinks,” my drinks
are usually different,
and conveniently less
expensive.
Sometimes I run out of
time and have to schedule
a 5AM run, pushing my
bedtime forward several
hours. The struggle is
doing all of this without
motivation outside myself.
No teammate forcing
me to hit three-hundred
backhands after practice
because I missed four
during. No friend to call
and remind me where lunch
is this time. Everyday is a
new motivation. Everyday
is a new variable. It is

Do You Remember Your First........?
There are certain events
in an individual’s life that
are looked back upon as
moments of extreme joy
and pride that they will
always be remembered
fondly. These types of
events are things like the
first time you rode your
bike without training
wheels or with the help of
your dad. The first time
you pick out your outfit
for Sunday school entirely
by yourself, (even though
now you look back and realize you did
not look as fabulous as you thought
you did then). The first time you
walked through the double doors of a
high school and suddenly began to let
yourself think that you are the coolest
person alive simply because you are in
high school. The first time you drove
a car by yourself or the first kiss you
shared with someone you really liked.
Life is full of first moments, and
recently I experienced what it is like to
have my first real office job. I have had
jobs before, of course, but never the
typical nine to five job that signifies
one’s transition from childhood to
adulthood. I saw getting this job as
an opportunity to develop a different
type of skill that I have not had the
opportunity to develop in previous
work environments. Skills like how to
deal with a printer malfunction, phones
that will not stop ringing or people

the office attending to
last minute details- days
before a big event.
Yes, I work in an office
doing typical nine to
five duties like making
copies, answering phones
and dealing with random
people that come into the
office in distress wanting
tickets to events. But my
job has perks and lots of
fun opportunities that
people typically do not
know about. I am an assistant with
the event programming department of
George Washington University called
Program Board. Program Board plans
events like Jason Mraz and Ben Fold’s
concerts, showings of movies prior to
their opening in the theatres, or events
where nobel prize winners speak
about their work. As a member of this
organization, I will get to do things like
meet and greet these incredible people
when they arrive on campus. I personally
haven’t been working at Program
Board long enough to experience one
of these wonderful opportunities. But
my coworkers had all access passes
at the Jason Marz and Ben Folds
concert and they had the opportunity
to meet the performers personally. It
is exciting to know that my typical
nine to five office job also translates
into a once

• Blythewood Lions Club Vidalia Onions Fundraiser.
The Blythewood Lions Club members are now taking
orders for vidalia onions again this year. The Blythewood
Lions Club members are selling ten pound bags of freshly
grown Georgia vidalia onions. The high quality vidalia
onions are sold by an advance order of a ten pound bag for
$10. The Columbia area Lions Clubs have a huge truck
load of fresh vidalia onions delivered to Columbia (direct
from the Georgia grower) in early May. A limited supply
of bags of vidalia onions are ordered and typically sell out
quickly. The profits from this fundraiser will be directed
to the local community for eye exams, eyeglasses, major
sight saving eye surgeries, hearing aids, and community
projects such as Special Olympics and Salkehatchie
Summer Service (Blythewood and Fairfield County).

our first “Food for Fines” Month. During the month
of May all branches of the Kershaw County Library
will be accepting donations of non-perishable food
items. For each item donated, $1.00 in fines will be

• Ridge View Spring Service Project for Invisible
Children in Uganda, Africa. Northern Uganda has
been hit hard by a civil war that has lasted over 23 years.
Because of this civil war, the country continues to be
threatened by violence, disease, mental and physical
issues, etc. One of the biggest concerns is the safety
and well-being of the children, who have come to be
known as Invisible Children. This year, Ridge View
will be raising money for Awere Secondary School
in northern Uganda, Africa. “Night Commuting”
Awareness Walk: Friday, April 24, 5:30 pm-7:30
pm. This is a walk to highlight the plight of the night
commuters: children who must walk from their village
to the city to remain safe from the LRA. The walk will
begin at Ridge View High School, move through the
Summit and end at the main fountain at the Village at
Sandhill. Parents, students, and community members

• Church Golf Tournament to Raise Funds for Youth
Programs. A golf tournament to be hosted May 11 at
the Golf Club of South Carolina at Crickentree by St.
David’s Episcopal Church will donate proceeds to
the church’s Vacation Bible School and other youth
programs. St. David’s has opened registration to the
public and encourages golfers and their companies to
play as well as to purchase hole sponsorships. Deadline
for entry is May 4. The tournament will begin at 1 p.m.
with a shotgun start. Prizes will be awarded for the longest
drive on two holes, closest to the pin on two holes, the
number of water balls per team, the number of trees hit
per team, and the best dressed male and female golfers.
Up to 30 four-person teams can be accommodated.
Beverages and snacks will be provided on the course and
an awards banquet will be held immediately following
the tournament. Crickentree is located at 1084 Langford
Road, Blythewood, S.C. Cost for 18 holes plus cart

Lessons From a Dry County
I grew up in a dry county.
The only adult beverages I
heard of as a youth were Pabst
Blue Ribbon and moonshine. I
don’t recall any referendums to
change things. There must have
been a few though because an
old fellow told me that every
time an alcohol referendum
came up, the preachers and
bootleggers defeated it.

about it. I did know that if you
make something illegal, people
will find a way to get around
the law.
Remember Prohibition?
Didn’t work. Moreover

were folk heroes.
There will always be those,
however, who believe you
can legislate good behavior.
You can’t. Take the truly great
writers. Drinking and crazy
behavior contributed to their
aura. Some scholars believe
drinking enhanced their artistic
abilities; others believe alcohol
simply let the big writers forget
their problems a while. Here are

alcohol. Genuine absinthe is 70
to 80 percent alcohol. It packs
a punch and in Hemingway’s
time some people believed it
enhanced creativity, artists and
writers especially.

a prime constituent of absinthe,
known also as “La Fée Verte”
(The Green Fairy), a tribute to
its alleged seductive powers.
Yes, some consider it an
aphrodisiac.
A lot of writers and artists
drank absinthe with wild
abandon and it acquired a
reputation as a dangerous
substance. Van Gogh, Picasso,
and other artists featured
absinthe in their works, and
some went insane; some
committed suicide. The
prohibitionists found it easy
to portray absinthe as an
addictive psychoactive drug.
By 1915, the United States and
most European countries had
banned absinthe. It faded away
with pockets of underground
drinkers here and there.
In its heyday, it enjoyed a cultlike
following that had much to
do with how you drink it. The
French do it this way. Pour a
dose into a glass. Place a sugar
cube on a flat perforated spoon,
and rest it across the glass. Drip
iced water over the sugar cube.
True absintheurs drop the water
slowly, watching each drip
cut a milky swath through the
emerald absinthe. That green
creamy appearance, by the
way, is what caused absinthe

Ridgeview Senior Signs Intent
To Play NCAA Ball
Ridge View High School Senior, Jarvis Davis, signed
a NCAA Scholarship National Letter of Intent to play
basketball next year for the Louisiana Tech University
Bulldogs of the Western Athletic Conference. Jarvis is
the first Ridge View High School student to sign a NCAA
D-1 Basketball National Letter of Intent in the school’s 14
year history. This a rare occurrence--out about 1,000 of
the senior basketball players in the state of South Carolina
there will be less than 10 who sign to play basketball at
this high of level of basketball. Congratulations Jarvis!

Mike Bradley is the owner of Omar’s, and Matt
Walker is his business associate. Mike grew up in
Columbia and graduated from Columbia Christian
School. He worked in the grocery business for
nine years, but always worked on vehicles with
his grandfather (a mechanic). In 1980, he changed
professions and began automotive repairs full time
with Eastern Carolina Truck Center. He then went
to work with Pulliam Ford for fourteen years where
he gained his certification in auto repairs, trucks and
diesels.
Matt grew up in Blythewood and graduated from
Spring Valley High School. His father owns a service
station in Columbia, and Matt worked there off and
on throughout high school and thereafter. In 1996, he
went to work with Redfearn Ford where he became
a master certified technician on auto repairs, trucks,
diesels and transmissions.

In May of 2008, Mike and Matt ventured out on
their own and Omar’s Automotive began. “When I
worked at the truck center,” Mike said, “a friend of
mine called me at work and asked to speak to ‘General
Omar Bradley.’ He knew my name was Mike, but
thought it would be funny to call and ask for Omar.
After that, everyone started calling me Omar. Hence,
the name Omar’s Automotive got its roots.”
Mike and his wife, Elizabeth, have one son, Spencer,
who recently graduated from Columbia Fire Academy.
Matt and his wife, Earline, have three children: Jacob,
Cassel and Charlene, and three grandchildren: Shyann,
Liberty and Juan.
Omar’s also offers service calls. “We can come out
and help you if you get stranded,” Matt said.

his legs as well as balance
problems. He was sent to a
neurologist for more tests,
which basically came back normal. “My symptoms
began to worsen,” he said. “I began to have sleep and
concentration problems. By January of 2008, I started
having bladder spasms, and was once again put on
antibiotics. I began to notice that each time I was
treated with antibiotics, my symptoms improved. I
reported this to my family doctor, and he ordered blood
tests for Lyme disease. The results were borderline
positive, and I continued on oral antibiotics. I was
then scheduled to see a neurologist at Duke Medical
Center.”
Lakes underwent a battery of tests at Duke, and
for each test, he had to discontinue the antibiotics.
“My symptoms came back each time I stopped taking
them,” he said. “Especially my balance problems.”
The testing at Duke, including testing for diseases,
came back with no positive results. “My annual
beach trip was cancelled,” Lakes said. “I finally
went back to my family physician, and he started me

antibiotics afterwards. My symptoms began to clear
again.”
After another visit to Duke, the neurologist discussed
treatment for Lyme disease with Lakes’ family
physician. “I began a regiment of Biaxin, another
antibiotic used to treat Lyme disease. I am currently
still taking it daily. However, I haven’t fully regained
my strength, and I have some permanent leg nerve
damage. The activities I once enjoyed (walking, golf
and even working in my garden) is now limited.”
Lakes said he is thankful for the improvement of
his symptoms even though he may never regain his
previous stamina and strength. “I am so thankful for
my family physician and for my wife. Both of them
worked diligently to investigate and pursue treatment
for Lyme disease.”
With warmer weather approaching, take precautions
while working in your yards, hunting or being outside-
you never know what dangers are lurking.

Susan has made it a
tradition to visit local schools
during the spring and offer
her prints to teachers and
staff as a fundraiser. “Ten
percent of the sales go
back to the schools,” she
said. “Growing up in the
educational world, I knew
that schools were always in
need of funds. I guess in a
way, it is a tribute to my dad
for all the years he spent in
the educational world.”
Each year, Susan also
goes to the State Fair and
displays her art. “I paint
making this commitment
to me and having no one
else to rely on may be
one of the most rewarding
experiences of my life.

of the cough syrup. After a few hours of
observation, I was sent home, where I
recovered slowly over several days.
Now every time I pass the local
emergency station here I say a little
prayer for those in residence. For their
safety, their dedication, their willingness
to serve in a job that is often unsung, not
to mention underpaid.
I don’t remember the names of the
angels who paid me a visit that night, but
one doesn’t need specifics to appreciate
their dedication to task or compassion for
their fellow human beings.
So to those who give of their time and
talents here in Blythewood, I’d like to say
thanks guys and girls from the bottom of
normally beating heart.
