Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> presented annually to anindividual <strong>who</strong> has acted in a brave mannerto confront danger to another person or theirorder of the Sheriffs the receiver has theirname permanently inscribed on an honoursboard and in a book of honour, on permanentd<strong>is</strong>play at the Central Criminal Court, insidethe Old Bailey in the City of London. Th<strong>is</strong>was created by Master Emeritus Steve NevilleOBE of the WCoSP. The original v<strong>is</strong>ioncame from a breakfast meeting with PeterFrench MBE when they were bemoaning thefact that once Sir David Brewer ended h<strong>is</strong>company would lose the only contact it hadwanted to retain that link with the City …they thought about how they could achievesuch an on-going relationship. After mored<strong>is</strong>cussion came the idea. Steve Neville said:“I had been nurturing an idea following theLondon tube and bus bombings. During theemergency, many ordinary people performedtremendous feats of spontaneous bravery andkindness; however when it came to taking the<strong>who</strong> were recogn<strong>is</strong>ed and honoured. I wasoutraged and just wanted to do something that,for once, recogn<strong>is</strong>ed the achievements of anordinary person, conducting extraordinary actsof bravery in the course of their everyday life.Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> how I sold the idea to Sir David Lew<strong>is</strong>(just as he was about to become Sheriff) andalso to Sir David Brewer as Lord Mayor. Theyboth supported the concept of the SheriffsAward as being for the ordinary person goingabout their everyday life.” Trevor VaughanMBE, CEO of the Sheriffs’ Award Committeesaid: “A 70-year-old lady wields her handbagto save young a man from being stabbed, a16-year-old man tackles a machete wieldingman in a club … these are just two examplesof how the Sheriffs of the City of London withthe WCoSP have said thank you for not onlyshowing bravery but a willingness to help afellow person in trouble.” The private securitybodies are rallying around to search for thatordinary person performing an extraordinaryact of bravery; see below. Th<strong>is</strong> feedbackabsolutely have the best in class onthe WSS board and I am positivethat the success achieved to date <strong>is</strong>a minuscule representation of theachievements and accompl<strong>is</strong>hmentsyet to come.” I asked other boardmembers for their thoughts. LetitiaEmeana said: “I found the launchevent to be a truly inspirationalevening mixed with fantastic peopleand ambience. The evening broughthome how many streams of securityex<strong>is</strong>t but some of the pressures and<strong>is</strong>sues are the same. Th<strong>is</strong> forumallows those various backgroundsto converge and offer a roundedadvice centre to members”. It proved that theconvergence of security d<strong>is</strong>ciplinesunder one roof <strong>is</strong> something that hasclearly been m<strong>is</strong>sing for too long.There <strong>is</strong> clearly huge support for theWSS’ aim to encourage, support anddevelop the next generation of womenin th<strong>is</strong> exciting and rapidly changingd<strong>is</strong>cipline.” And Sarah Harvie said:“Words alone are not enough todescribe the energy and enthusiasmexperienced at the WSS launch and itwas clearly evident the WSS conceptwill bring another d<strong>is</strong>tinct angle tonetworking in security.
