Archaeology South-EastDover Castle New Admissions BuildingSummaryAn Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment and Walkover Survey wasconducted for the site of the proposed new admissions buildings at Dover Castle,Kent. The appraisal site is located on the western half of a terrace at the base ofthe south slope of the earthwork bank around St Mary in Castro (site centredNGR 632673, 141758). The site is currently occupied by a temporary ticket officeand a car park and is situated within the curtilege of the Scheduled AncientMonument (National Monument Number 30281).A review of the existing archaeological information suggests that archaeologicalremains deriving from the early land use of the site and castle are likely to havebeen significantly truncated as a result of Medieval and Post Medievalgroundwork within the development area. However, the development site isconsidered to have High potential for the survival of archeological features anddeposits relating to the Medieval and Post Medieval fortifications and landscapingof the castle grounds.The evidence is reviewed and recommendations suggested for further work._____________________________________________________________________i
