Activate Faith (25 minutes)Oh, Brother!Set Up: Set a classroom table on its side to serve as a puppet stage. Cover the frontof the table. Place the craft supplies in an area where kids can easily access them.Set up the glue gun in a safe place where only adults have access. (optional)Activity InstructionsBefore the show:1.2.3.Brainstorm with the kids what characteristics Jacob <strong>and</strong> Esau had as babies<strong>and</strong> as grown-ups. Help kids develop a mental image of other characters <strong>and</strong>props from the story. What do you think <strong>Isaac</strong> looked like? Activate Faith (25 minutes)Survivor CanaanSet Up:• Hang the bedsheet backdrop to designate the stage area. Place the chairtoward the center back of the stage. Drape a piece of fabric over the chair.• Set the props <strong>and</strong> costume pieces where kids can choose among them.• Set the fabric strips <strong>and</strong> craft supplies where kids can use them.• Make several copies of the Survivor Canaan Skit Script.• Prepare to play the recording during the workshop (optional).Activity InstructionsBefore the skit:We are creating a skit based on a reality game show. The show is called SurvivorCanaan. The show will feature Team Jacob <strong>and</strong> Team Esau competing for avaluable prize!1. Ask a few kids to create the following props for the set.• Targets <strong>and</strong> arrows: Stuff two grocery bags with newspaper <strong>and</strong> tape themshut. Paint a red <strong>and</strong> white target on the front <strong>and</strong> back of each bag. Tapefeathers to one end of each dowel. Poke one dowel into the middle of the targeton one side of one bag. Poke the other dowel into one side of the other grocerybag, missing the center of the target by a lot.• Birthright: Write the word birthright on the parchment paper. Make the paperlook like an official document.• Sign: Use the posterboard to create a decorative sign that reads SurvivorCanaan. Hang the sign on or near the backdrop onstage.2. Invite some kids to set up the props onstage. Provide scripts for them. Readthe script. Decide where it would make sense to place the props on thestage.3.4.Ask a volunteer to be in charge of the music. Give the volunteer a script.Provide an opportunity for him or her to practice fading the music in <strong>and</strong> outduring the skit (optional).Invite volunteers to play the parts of Dan, <strong>Isaac</strong>, Team Esau, <strong>and</strong> TeamJacob, then h<strong>and</strong> out scripts to them. 2.3.God promised Abraham a big, big family. That means Abraham’s son <strong>Isaac</strong>needed to get married. Who should <strong>Isaac</strong> marry? How will God help? Let’sfind out as we watch Act One of The Servant’s Decision! Cue the sign holderto walk across the stage.Have a short intermission between each act, allowing groups to switch places<strong>and</strong> get settled on the stage or in the audience. Survivor Canaan Skit Script(Music swells <strong>and</strong> fades out.)DAN: Welcome to Survivor Canaan. I’m Dan the Man, <strong>and</strong> I will be your host as we watch Team Esau (Extends h<strong>and</strong>toward TEAM ESAU.) <strong>and</strong> Team Jacob (Extends h<strong>and</strong> toward TEAM JACOB.) compete to win possession of the l<strong>and</strong>of Canaan. Our teams are ready, so let’s begin our first challenge!(DAN or a stage crew member places a target in front of each team, positioning the bags so that the audience cannot seethe dowels that are sticking out of them. TEAM JACOB MEMBER #1 <strong>and</strong> TEAM ESAU MEMBER #1 pick up their bows.)DAN: Our first challenge involves a skill that’s useful for hunting: target shooting. Each team will get one try toshoot an arrow as close to the middle of the target as possible. Do you want to know what you’re playing for?TEAM ESAU <strong>and</strong> TEAM JACOB: Yes!DAN: (Holds the birthright sign over his head.) It’s the birthright—your chance to claim preferred status at the end ofthe game! Team Esau, you go first.(TEAM ESAU MEMBER #1 pretends to shoot an arrow at the target. Teams set down their bowls as DAN <strong>and</strong> ISAAC enter. DAN helps ISAAC to thechair, then takes his place between the teams. Music fades.)DAN: I hope you had a restful night because today is the final challenge. You will be competing for the blessing ofOld Father <strong>Isaac</strong>! (Motions toward ISAAC.)DAN: Team Esau holds a distinct advantage at this point of the game because they possess the birthright.(TEAM ESAU shifts uncomfortably as TEAM JACOB smiles <strong>and</strong> winks.)DAN: Let’s begin.
