Mezar, Kommagene Kralı I. Antiochos’un. Çağının, hatta dünya tarihininbu en ilginç ve önemli figürü bilindiği kadarıyla Nemrut Dağı’na gömüldü.Mezarın -muhtemelen- hemen üzerindeki tanrı heykelleri bu konudaArchaeology’s “storage room” is full of myths, curse rumours, passionatequests or sad renunciation stories. However, there are two storiesamong them which surpass all the others, actually two stories of oppositenature. The first one does not deliver any clue at all. The other “riddle”stands there in the open in front of scholars and excavation teamswith no one being able to solve the puzzle up until today.Let us open the first chest first; follow the path of the myth concerningGenghis Khan’s grave. Genghis Khan died on 18 August 1227. Somebelieve that the legendary ruler fell sick and died during a militarycampaign, others speculate that he fell from horseback. But the actualenigma is the whereabouts of his tomb.According to those who like to ornament history with phantasies, it wasGenghis Khan’s own will to be buried at an unknown place that no oneshould find, and that accordingly, extraordinary measures were taken tohide his burial location. The thousand soldiers who buried him were executedafter the funeral ceremony. The eight hundred soldiers who killedthem shared the same fate and eventually, thousands of horses crushedand trampled the soil over his tomb so that any possibly remaining traceshould disappear! The exclamation mark above is to emphasize the size of the phantasy, since there is very little truth in this whole story. First of all, it is aMongolian tradition to keep burial places secret. Even today, similartraditions continue to exist in certain communities in Central Asia andthe Far-East. It is evident that this tradition was strictly observed duringGenghis Khan’s era. It is a matter of fact that horses trampled the soilover his tomb to destroy any possible sign. A number of horses commensuratewith the ruler’s glory were probably employed to this endeven if not thousands of them. It should not be impossible to guessapproximately the place where he is buried by following the path of hismovements weeks or months before his death. Hence, it is believedthat Genghis Khan is most likely buried somewhere in the proximity ofthe Burhan Haldun mountain, rumoured to be his birthplace as well asthe purported location of his tomb. However, albeit various excavationteams attempted several times to discover that tomb, no one succeededup to this date.68
Cengiz Han adına yapılmış temsili anıtlar (solda) ve Nemrut Dağı (altta).Imaginative statues of Genghis Khan (on the left) and the Nemrut Mountain(below). The door which cannot be openedAnother big mystery is the tomb under the Nemrut Mountain in Anatolia. In this case the location of the tomb is best known. It is there underthe mountain at touching distance on the one hand, but no less remoteon the other hand. This is the tomb-sanctuary of Antiochos I, King ofCommagene of the first century BC. Evidence to the existence of hisgrave under this huge tumulus are the various deity sculptures on topof this hill, standing there for centuries as signs showing the way. Butthat way is a dead-end which leads nowhere, since nobody was able toaccede to the royal tomb for the last one hundred years during whichvarious attempts were made. The burial room is not protected by gods but interestingly by humaningenuity: a circular tumulus with a diameter of 150 meters and a heightof 50 meters, at an altitude of 2150 meters, obviously nothing insurmountablewithin today’s modern technology. Nonetheless, no one wasable to surmount the dilemma. The one who put in the most insistingeffort was American Archaeologist Theresa Goell. Together with GermanArchaeologist Prof. Dr. Friedrich Karl Dörner, she took part in excavationsat Nemrut Mountain for twenty years from 1953 to 1973. Thetumulus consisting of millions of egg-sized rounded stones, every timethey attempted to dig into the hillock, thousands of these stones haileddown like an avalanche and obstructed any passage under the mountain. They found a cavity under the hill which they hoped to be the wayto the tomb. But it has not been possible to establish whether it wasthe actual gate to the tomb or just a natural cavern. Their relentlessefforts did not yield the expected results. Nevertheless, Theresa Goellcontinued all her life to believe that the tomb-sanctuary and secrets ofKing Antiochos were buried there. She only gave up her scrutiny after 20years of unrelenting research work and returned home in 1973.She was undoubtedly in a great disappointment, when she died at age84 in 1985. She had come so close to the goal, but had not been able toattain it, opening the door to the secrets of King Antiochos, the founderof a unique culture in Anatolia, the cradle of civilizations.Notwithstanding such failures, scholars continue to pursue theirdreams, their goals, re-assessing clues from a new perspective, in thelight of different prospects. May the tomb be located at the westernterrace, symbolizing death in the Antique world, contrary to all theresearch conducted at the eastern terrace before? Will the human intelligenceand modern technology be able to solve the puzzle at the heartof Nemrut? And, will there be a way to discover the tomb of Genghis Khan after somany centuries? Or will both stories gather dust in the storage roomof archaeology and be buried in oblivion? Questions can be extendedendlessly. Though there is only one answer: maybe you cannot alwaysfind what you are looking for, but only those who keep searching areable to find!69
