Muğla’nın Datça ilçesininsınırları içinde bulunan Knidos Antik Kenti’nden yaklaşık 150 yıl önce alınan, özelizinle savaş gemisine konularak İngiltere’ye götürülen Knidos Aslanı ve Knidos Demeteriheykellerinin iade edilmesi için mücadele başlatan Datçalılar, Yorgun Herkül’üngeri getirilmesiyle kampanya çalışmalarını hızlandırdı.The inhabitants of Datça claim back their Knidos LionThe recent repatriation of the upper half of theTired Heracles Statue from the USAwas a source of hope for the people of Datça who demand the restitution of theKnidos Lion by the United Kingdom. A statue of Demeter and a colossal figure of alion carved out of one block of marble, discovered 150 years ago at the Knidos Ancientcity within the borders of Datça county, Muğla province, were transferred on a navalship to London, upon a special authorization from Ottoman authorities, by ArchaeologistSir Charles Newton. Both are on display at the British Museum since then. Beyzade Yaycıoğlu, leader of the archaeologicalteam conducting the restoration and repair work on the statues found bothsplit in two parts, declared: “We completed the restoration of one of the twolion sculptures. It is now on display at the museum’s courtyard. We almostfinished the repair work on the second lion as well.
